Ivan Nova has partially torn ulnar collateral ligament

The MRI on RHP Ivan Nova last night has revealed a partial tear of ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow.

He will be placed on the disabled list today and will be further examined tomorrow in New York by Yankees team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad.

“Tommy John” surgery is a possibility, though the Yankees will look at the chance that the injury can be rehabbed first.

“It’s really unfortunate,” manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s a guy that obviously we were counting on pretty heavily this year. He’ll be re-evaluated by Dr. Ahmad tomorrow and I guess you go from there to see what the next step is.”

Today’s roster moves:

Reinstated 1B Mark Teixeira from the 15-day disabled list; recalled RHP Preston Claiborne from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and RHP Bryan Mitchell from Double-A Trenton; placed RHP Ivan Nova on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow ulnar collateral ligament injury; optioned INF Scott Sizemore to Triple-A Scranton/WB; designated RHP Matt Daley for assignment.

There is something wrong with this team. Too many injuries and far too many acquisitions coming along with health issues. Some of this doesn’t make any sense.Perhaps the problem lies with the overall training and conditioning regimen and certainly alot of the pitching issues need to be traced back to Rothschild and Girardi as well. His handling of the staff has long been suspect.

Man, pitchers going down throughout the league early in the season. What’s going on? Why so many injuries so early? Nova has only pitched a few games. Is this a carry over from last year? I’m not sure Nova was the right guy for the rotation anyway even though he pitched well in spring training. Don’t know if Phelps is the right guy either based on how he’s performed out of the pen and Warren hasn’t been great either. I agree. Yankees need to acquire a veteran to fill the gap like they did with Garcia last year and Colon the year before.

Lol @ Gardner not being at 3B. What were they ruling a ground rule double?

Do NOT mess with Nova’s injury by going the rehab route. Shut him down for the year and do the TJ surgery. Problem is this means Phelps becomes the likely candidate to go into the rotation with Preston in for rotation. I’d suggest IF there is any pitching out there the Yankees take a look. I heard so much about Montgomery a few years ago and then a quick disappearance. What happened?

Meant to post relief for Preston.

Andy Pettitte!

You can never have too much pitching. Phelps, Warren and Nuno are all possible starters, with Claiborne filling the relief spot.
