Girardi intrigued by reliever Raul Valdes

The Yankees used a real Johnny Wholestaff alignment to get this 4-2 win over the Rays in Game 1, calling on seven relievers behind 2 2/3 innings from spot starter Hector Noesi.

Of those seven, manager Joe Girardi said he was intrigued most by Raul Valdes, who got four outs after Noesi, scattering a hit while walking one and striking out three.

“I thought Valdes did a pretty good job,” Girardi said. “The last two times that we’ve used him, he’s done a pretty good job for us. He’s got a little funk to him. There’s something about his windup that looks like the ball kind of jumps at you, and we’ll use him more.”

Valdes has made just two appearances with New York since being claimed off waivers on Aug. 16 from the Cardinals, and would be a long shot to make the postseason roster. But you never know.

Yankees claim left-hander Valdes from Cardinals

A minor move to note here, just announced in Kansas City:

The Yankees have claimed left-hander Raul Valdes on waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals. He’ll join Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In a corresponding move, right-hander Jeffrey Marquez has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Valdes, 33, was 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in seven games for the Cardinals this year. He was 6-2 with a 4.73 ERA in 27 games (seven starts) at Triple-A Memphis.

He doesn’t seem to be much of a threat to take time away from Boone Logan at the big league level, but it gives the Yankees another lefty at Triple-A after J.C. Romero was let out of his contract.
