Greetings from Baltimore

The Yankees have arrived in Baltimore, where the American League Division Series is set to open tomorrow night. Today, the Yankees will have a workout at Camden Yards, as will the Orioles, who traveled home following their victory over the Rangers in last night’s Wild Card playoff game in Arlington.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi is scheduled to meet the media at 4 p.m. ET, and though Girardi said he may wait until tomorrow morning to announce his roster, perhaps he’ll at least be able to announce his pitching rotation beyond CC Sabathia.

I’m hazarding a guess that Andy Pettitte will be his Game 2 starter, but Pettitte declined to answer that yesterday until Girardi addresses it. WFAN’s Sweeny Murti playfully tried to circumvent Pettitte’s stone wall, asking if Pettitte would wear gray pants or pinstripes for his start. Pettitte chuckled and said that might spoil the surprise.

We at least have a couple of hints about the playoff roster thanks to Twitter:

Additionally, Cory Wade and Casey McGehee were spotted on their way out of the clubhouse last night.

Sabathia will chat with the media at 4:15 p.m., and the Yankees will be on the field from 4:15 to 5:30. Buck Showalter will announce his Game 1 starter at his 5 p.m. press briefing; at least, he’d better, because the starter is set to talk to the media at 5:15. The Orioles will be on the field from 5:45 to 7 p.m.

MLB announces schedule through Tuesday

Major League Baseball has announced the game times through Tuesday, which covers Games 1 and 2 of the American League Division Series for the Yankees.

New York will play ALDS Game 1 on Sunday at 6:15 p.m. ET at the winner of tonight’s Wild Card game between the Orioles and Rangers. Monday’s ALDS Game 2 is scheduled to begin at 8:07 p.m. ET.

Both games will be televised on TBS. Tonight the Yankees are holding a workout under the lights at Yankee Stadium, and they’ll likely bring their bags to hit the road for either Baltimore or Arlington after the Wild Card game is decided.

  • As I’ve replied to those who have asked on Twitter, the Yankees do have home field advantage, despite the fact they open on the road. Game 3 (plus Game 4 & Game 5, if necessary) would be held at Yankee Stadium. Yes, this is a change from the old 2-2-1 format due to scheduling conflicts, but all involved teams have known about it since at least March. MLB has said the old format will return in 2013.

This 2-3 ALDS format is the same one that MLB used from 1995-97. That worked out OK for the Yanks as division winners in 1996; not so much as Wild Cards in ’95 (Seattle) and ’97 (Cleveland).

  • Umpires have been announced for the ALDS series involving the Yankees: Brian Gorman, Mark Carlson, Fieldin Culbreth, Mike Everitt, Angel Hernandez and Tony Randazzo.
  • Statement from Yankees president Randy Levine

Yankees president Randy Levine has released the following statement regarding Tuesday’s game:

“The decision to play Tuesday night’s game vs. Baltimore was a collaborative effort between Major League Baseball and the New York Yankees. Every possible effort was made to play the game because there were no suitable alternative dates on which to play a rescheduled game given the poor weather forecast for Wednesday.

“We certainly recognize the inconvenience to our fans and have invited them back to enjoy a future game at Yankee Stadium.”

Jeter scratched with right knee bruise

BALTIMORE – Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter was scratched from the lineup for the second game of Sunday’s day-night doubleheader against the Orioles with a bruised right knee.

Jeter fouled a ball off his knee in a third-inning at-bat against Baltimore’s Zach Britton in the first game of the twinbill.

He was attended to on the field by head athletic trainer Gene Monahan and manager Joe Girardi, but stayed in the game, going 0-for-4 in New York’s 2-0 loss.

Jeter said between games that he expected to play, but was replaced by Eduardo Nunez at shortstop minutes before first pitch.

“I mean, it hurts,” Jeter said. “It’s really nothing.”

    Yanks show interest in Wigginton

Reposting this from the MLB.com Trade Buzz blog:

The Yankees have expressed interest in trading for the Orioles’ Ty
Wigginton, according to the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger. Citing a
baseball official, the newspaper reported that the Yankees are one of
several teams to inquire on the versatile Wigginton, who started his
Major League career across town with the Mets.

    Yankees general
manager Brian Cashman has identified improving the bench as a priority
leading into the July 31 non-waivers trade deadline. The 32-year-old
Wigginton could provide a right-handed bat with pop, while representing
an offensive upgrade over Yankees bench infielders Kevin Russo and
    Ramiro Pena.
