David Wells among guest instructors

David Wells will be spending the entire spring with the team, although don’t look for his name to be listed for any bullpen sessions.

The 47-year-old Wells is in his first turn as a guest instructor, not only to spend time with the guys but also to get a peek around the league for use with his television gigs.
“He looks better now than he did when he was playing,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman quipped. “Gene Michael always said that he could pitch until that arm fell off. Obviously there’s a lot of history here and sometimes camp can get long. I think Boomer will keep it lively for us.”
Lee Mazzilli is also on the list of first-time instructors, while long-time mainstays Graig Nettles and Mickey Rivers are not attending this year. Others in camp include Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson, Goose Gossage, Tino Martinez and Ron Guidry.

Sometimes the best trades…

… are the ones you don’t make. Found this while surfing around the Internet this morning – an epic trade fail from the Dec. 27, 1995 New York Times, when the Orioles traded for David Wells:

Jim Bowden, the Reds’ general manager, declined to discuss the Yankees’ involvement, but an official familiar with the Wells talks said Steinbrenner called Bowden Saturday night and offered pitcher Mariano Rivera and catcher Jorge Posada.

Bowden, looking to cut his payroll, obviously decided he preferred [Tom] Goodwin, a 23-year-old left-handed hitter, who in 87 games with the Orioles last season batted .263 and had 22 stolen bases in 26 attempts.

Whoops on Jim Bowden. That would have changed the course of Yankees history quite a bit, huh? Wonder if Rivera would have eventually moved to the bullpen or spent his life as a starting pitcher?
