Yankees numbers that count
These have been posted elsewhere -- including right here on Yankees.com -- but for those of you who are numerically inclined, here are this year's new uniform digits as well as a few changes. Italics show the last person to use those numbers.
Thanks to yankeenumbers.com for reference material.
Jonathan Albaladejo, 63 -- last used in spring '07 by Colter Bean. Hey, it got him to the big leagues.
Andrew Brackman, 64 -- worn in spring '07 by Kevin Reese. No such luck for Reese.
Chris Britton, 38 -- Down one digit from 39. 38 last used by Chase Wright.
LaTroy Hawkins, 22 -- Last used by Roger Clemens (that was quick, wasn't it?).
Sean Henn, 30 -- Yes, Willie Randolph's old number ... though Matt Smith borrowed it in '06.
Phil Hughes, 34 -- Taking Henn's number and abandoning 65. Crank up the t-shirt machines. Hughes said on his blog that he's promised Henn a Tampa-area dinner in exchange.
Ian Kennedy, 31 -- Farewell, No. 36. Used by Josh Phelps and Edwar Ramirez in '07.
Jeff Marquez, 71 -- Welcome to camp. Last used by Ramiro Pena.
Ross Ohlendorf, 39 -- Chris Britton's old number. Down from 60 for Ross.
Scott Patterson, 70 -- Welcome to camp. Last used by Omir Santos.
Edwar Ramirez, 36 -- Last used by Mike Myers/Jim Brower/Ian Kennedy. Surrendering 31 to Kennedy.
Non-roster pitchers: Dan Giese, 74 (Matt DeSalvo); Alan Horne, 75 (Bronson Sardinha); Dan McCutchen, 76 (Jeff Kennard); Mark Melancon, 78 (Chase Wright); Heath Phillips, 79 (Tyler Clippard); Scott Strickland, 43 (another workhorse Scott - Proctor); Billy Traber, 61 (Darrell Rasner in spring, later Matt DeSalvo).
Darrell Rasner is still listed at No. 27 but we bet Joe Girardi will have something to say about that.

I thought the whole reason that Phil’s number was 65 is because he wanted a number that ended with 5 for some reason. Why the sudden change of heart for 34. Just when I was getting used to knowing all the rookie numbers…

He said his mom's favorite number is 7 and 3+4=7 so he gave up the 5 ending for 34.

Didn't hurt that Nolan Ryan wore 34 for Houston and the Rangers, either.
