Rocket issues another denial
As we continue to sift through the aftermath of last week's Mitchell Report, Roger Clemens issued another statement this afternoon. As released by his agent, Randy Hendricks, Clemens is categorically denying use of steroids, human growth hormone or any other performance enhancer:
Statement of Roger Clemens
“I want to state clearly and without qualification: I did not take steroids, human growth hormone or any other banned substances at any time in my baseball career or, in fact, my entire life. Those substances represent a dangerous and destructive shortcut that no athlete should ever take.
I am disappointed that my 25 years in public life have apparently not earned me the benefit of the doubt, but I understand that Senator Mitchell’s report has raised many serious questions. I plan to publicly answer all of those questions at the appropriate time in the appropriate way. I only ask that in the meantime people not rush to judgment.”
In other news, Alex Rodriguez has a new representative and he's going a bit Hollywood. From all indications, Scott Boras is still A-Rod's baseball agent, even though he told CBS' '60 Minutes' last week that he and Boras are not currently on speaking terms.

We'll see where Clemens takes this. At least he's off the fence. I was really starting to question his grit while he was being crucified in the media over the last week. He needs to ****, or get off the pot.

Roger, I and many others want to believe you, I still think you're a HOFer.
A pitchers legs are the most important things, If your legs go,you're finished. Roger has always been a workout freak, so maybe it's possible?? Right now I agree we should at least try to give you the benefit of the doubt, You have earned that much. There is no proof that you did steroids or HGH only heresay, You need only an explanation for the Checks.

Man, I really can't buy Clemens' story. As much as I want to believe it, there's something frisky- something being kept in the dark here. I guess that's what he'll reveal at the news conference he wants to hold in the " near future ". I agree FJR, he needs to travel farther in his explanations. I wasn't aware of those checks you mentioned! What were they issued for?

Has anyone even researched HGH? We all have growth hormones but it decreases as you get older. Once you reach the age of 30+ you start to feel the decrease. What HGH does is it increases those levels, increasing your healing time and makes you feel younger. You can inject it or you can spray it orally. Did ANYONE read that article by Andy Petitte saying "I feel like I can pitch for another 10 years!"? Makes me wonder why after years of arm pain and injuries that he had to play through that he would come out and say he could play 10 more...(any he only did it for two days???? a couple years ago)..I just don't get this though..If it is legal to get HGH from a doctor, like Paul Byrd..why is it a problem illegally? Both ways you are using it. I think you either ban it completely or you let players use it. The only negative effects I have read about HGH is in extremly overdosed usage of it. Otherwise it helps you heal, and feel younger. If we are making scientific advancements to improve the lives of humans, and in doing so it allows our favorite players to play longer, and more often...can we just make a new records book and start from 1996 on? Steroids are awful, HGH doesn't seem like the same thing in my eyes but I know I AM WRONG. It is a performance enhancing drug for all the reasons I listen. But if there is another type of "drug" that enhances our lifestyles without the negative effects similar to steroids...and no way of testing for it...why not make it legal to use and not have to worry about cheaters. This is just an absurd idea and I assume nobody agrees. I'm just bored at work and sick of steroids talk, when most people don't know what HGH is.

Bronxkid, Yanks Worker Admits Not Reporting Tips From Players, Coaches
WNBC Tue, 18 Dec 2007 12:13 PM PST (from Yahho.com)
The traveling secretary for the New York Yankees admitted Tuesday that he failed to report more than $50,000 in tips from players and coaches on an income tax return.
The club house people get tips and perhaps money for other ?? things. Many plyer tip w/checks

If someone has the long term effects of it, I'd like to read it and them change my opinion. I'm sure there will be some, just couldn't find them.

I don't know either, Maybe a doctor or a pharmacist can tell us more about how HGH aids the healing process. They give athletes cortisone shots to relieve pain, and thats bad for you too. Thet can only give about 3 a year, So it can't be a good thing for the body.

HGH is only prescribed to people with low immune systems (AIDS patients), or dwarves. Noone else is getting it legally from a doctor. Most of the guys getting caught are having 'scrips written by Dentists and ****.

Chaz, On another blog you said: Next 4 retired numbers for the NYY in order: (copied)
51 Williams
21 ? Who
6 ? Who, Clete Boyer??
2 Jeter
I've been out of it for a while Who are 21 and 6??
I can't see Bernie(A great guy) In the same league as DiMaggio, Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle etc. He's not even HOF material, Or am I wrong on this?. I thought he was over shadowed by O'Neil, Mattingly etc. Tell me why he was, in your minds a Yankee great.
Report any abuse or spam
51 Williams
21 O'Neil..I doubt this one
6 is Torre
2 Jeter
42 Rivera
If Williams doesn't get it, being a lifelong Yankee, NO WAY does O'Neil get one. You can't include every player from the 96-00 teams. O'Neil's stats as a Yankee are no where close to Jeter's, Mantle's...etc as a whole on the Yankees.

Paulie was my favorite player between Mattingly and Jeter, so my opinion of him is biased. I still think he was the acting Captain while Jeet was coming up. Paulie was awesome. One of my favorite quotes about him was from Torre:
"Paulie is the only player that I know of that wants to go 5 for 4." - That's balls!

Nothing like seeing Paulie, on a 3 for 5 night, get pissed and freaking implode because he lined out. That guy was a tremendous competitor.

No doubt..he was a fan favorite..And he did have pretty good stats. But in terms of being retired over Williams 16 year career to O'Neil's 9 is probably not going to happen

I'm a big O'Neil fan as well, but I don't see his number being retired.
I can see Bernie, but I am also biased as he was my favorite player. I suppose only time will tell.

Thanks for the help!. Torres # being retired may depend upon him returning to the new stadium and not boycotting the Yankees as did my man Yogi. ( who later relented. Paul was one of a kind. Bernie a Yankee for 16 years is super, but he was never a superstar. Maybe he too should return to the stadium and stop his pouting. It appears to me that he believes the Yankees owe him something, He was past his peak, but he thought they should offer him a fat contract. not unlike Clemens inflated one last year)just because he thought they owed him. Of course this is strictly my opinion...

I'm sure I'm didn't make any friends here, But, as I said those were my opinions. Don't get me wrong I did like Bernie. It's only I don't share the same opinion of him.

Chaz, every time they play that "Warrior" montage at the Stadium late in a game, I get so pumped - the hair raises on my neck and I'm ready to go all-Braveheart on the opponent...O'Neill was the man, I absolutely loved everything about his game - he's as high as Donnie Baseball for my list.
I'd LOVE to see his number retired, don't know though. I do find it peculiar/ironic that no one has worn #21 since 2001 though...
Bernie and Torre will get there's retired, but now the Yanks will wait for Torre to finish managing in LA. Rivera's is already quasi-retired, because of the Jackie Robinson thing - Rivera will still get his little plaque out there in the new Yankee Stadium...Jeter, no brainer. So that's #2, #6, #42 and #51 DEFINITELY. Maybe #21. You have to wonder one day as well with #46, #13 as well? Of course #13 has to get a few rings first (hee hee)...pretty soon those Spring Training numbers will be the 25-man roster numbers....

I can see where some of you fade on Bernie - 1) he's not "pouting" somewhere, he's perfectly fine. 2) he did EVERYTHING an elite Yankees centerfielder needed to do to accomplish Monument Park status - the guy won rings, was a leader, had longevity, was clutch, won batting titles, lead the team, played stellar, above average baseball, and never was involved in controversy - i know he didn't have the gifts of a Mantle, or the celebrity-status of Dimaggio, but why isn't he considered among them? Because he was a quiet guy? Because later in his career he had shoulder issues and couldn't throw well? Mantle had the same issues with his knees, and I don't diss the Mick!
Bernie is a borderline MLB HOFer, but a CONCRETE Monument Park Yankee, and no one besides him will ever wear #51...

My views regarding the next "numbers" the Yankees should retire are....
#6 - Joe Torre - Maybe the Yankees could give this honor to Torre at this year's All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, if he returns as a coach with the NL team. Even if he is not a coach, this would be a perfect time to retire his #6. But, the only question: Would it upstage the 2008 All-Star Game?...
#51 - Bernie Williams
#21 - Paul O'Neil
#42 - Mariano Rivera
# 2 - Derek Jeter
#20 - Jorge Posada - I'm surprised no one brought up his name yet.
#13 - A-Rod
And, finally, a long over due honor needs to take place by Major League Baseball...
Retire Babe Ruth's #3 throughout Baseball, just like MLB did with Jackie Robinson's #42

Jimmy, I argee why hasnt anyone metioned #20 (Posada) before now? I think what he has done should atleast merit some thought. And I also think they should deffenitly retire #51. Burn baby burn

I agree with the number retirings. I know that we can't retire everyone because we'll run out of numbers someday, but there are so many great Yankees from the 90s dynasty era. Bernie I think is a no-brainer. 16 year career, all with the Yanks, 4 rings. He was a leader that led by quiet example, never did anything that could be seen in a negative light. If it were up to me, he would have his place in Monument Park. Guys like him, Jeter, Posada, Rivera, etc. embody everything the Yanks stand for.
But, lets take it one step at a time and retire the numbers first.

Good idea retiring 3 throughout the game. But, at the same time, I like having the Babe all to ourselves, too. He's our legend of legends and the true Homerun King. It took Hank Aaron 1100 more at bats to hit 40 more homeruns. Hank Aaron got the record through longevity in the game. Babe was a god. Barroid, well, let's just say I can't wait until A-Rod passes him and eliminates his tainted numbers from the top spot in the record books.

It doesn't matter how many ab's it took to Aaron, he was a legit homerunm king. Remember when Marris broke the Babes single season mark there was an asterisk next to 61 for a while because Ruth played in an era where there were fewer games per season, but a later comissioner took the asterisk away because it doesn't matter. Babe Ruthe is probably still the greatest power hitter of all time, and he wasn't a bad pitcher either, but Aaron's the true homerun king in my book, def. not Bonds, and I can be happy that when babe held the reccord he would hit more homeruns than entire teams would, thats a power hitter.

Unfortunately, Bonds has more dingers than Aaron, so he's the Homerun King in the eyes of the stats. No way around it.

I think #3 should stay with the Yanks (agreed, Chaz)...
Take nothing away from Aaron guys - he never hit 50 HR's in a season, so to have that much consistency over that long of a period to hit that many HR's, along with several other prestigious hitting numbers, is just downright AMAZING. I'm really surprised poor Henry Aaron doesn't get as much attention as he should, he was an amazing player, and from I've heard/read, a great teammate. I'm excited to see if Arod approaches his numbers if he'll get more involved, unlike how he was with Bonds...
