Six-shooter: Put another one in the books

073001-AROD.jpgThe Yankees came away 8-5 winners on a night when the Melk-man delivered again and it felt an awful lot longer than three hours and 16 minutes, in my humble opinion.

Sure, that might have had something to do with the 61-minute rain delay, but it didn't help that the Yankees got a so-so start from Joba Chamberlain and started the night 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

That continued until Alex Rodriguez crushed one off deep into the evening sky -- a good sign for the Bombers, who now think that A-Rod is back to playing the game at a high level.

"I haven't turned on a ball 95 [mph], up and in, in a long time," Rodriguez said.

-- It has been frustrating for Joe Girardi to watch Chamberlain keep falling into the same trouble spots, and it's not promising when you see Joba labor and slow down his mound approach - it doesn't help him. But Girardi had a great line when he talked about the expectations on a 23-year-old pitcher.

"They don't have Nintendo controllers in their back pocket," he said. "You can't expect them to be perfect."

-- Despite tonight's troubles, the Yankees are sticking with Brian Bruney as the eighth inning reliever of choice, as Girardi said they need to get him going again. Phil Hughes is content with his role, be it seventh or eighth inning, as he continues to adjust well beyond what most anyone thought he'd offer in that role.

And don't forget, having thrown only nine pitches, there's no reason he shouldn't be available in back-to-back games. That'd be a first.

-- Hideki Matsui's father, Masao Matsui, was in the house and got to see his son go 1-for-3 with the double that kicked off the Yanks' three-run eighth.

"I think he's got a little jet lag," Matsui said, through the trusty Roger Kahlon. "He might be a little sleepy, but I'm sure he's happy."

-- Eric Hinske, by the way, never made it. They'll make a roster move before Wednesday's game, assuming he gets a flight out. One last closing thought from the Stadium -- rumor has it that John Sterling was unprepared with a home run call for speedy Brett Gardner. Submitting for approval: "Brett the Jet... is cleared for takeoff!"

Well we are only 2.5 behind the 'Sucks' we need to keep playing hard. Joe, you need to bat Cano somewhere else in the line up he is struggling in 5th. A-Rod needs some protection now that he is seeing the ball well. A-Rod has been playing a gold glove third base; man what an arm he's got and he is also producing in the clutch [monster HR when we needed it]. I certainly believe what Mitch from the MLB Network said that steroids give you nothing but the strength to play 162 games but unquestionably not skills. Outside of his private life which I could care less; Alex is one of the best players I have ever seen play the game. Yes, despite his lack of production in the postseason I still believe it, he is certainly not the reason we do not have another ring in almost a decade, he can go 5 for 5 and we would still have permitted a bunch of runs from our past pitching staff.
Go yanks for 27

I find John Sterling's home run calls amusing, BUT I have to draw the line at "You're on the MARK, Teixeira" (which, thankfully, he only used once). You know that it's becoming overdone when he becomes so infatuated with the tag line that he forgets who actually hit the home run, like he did with Matsui/A-Rod a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah, Sterling is a bit much but harmless, nonetheless. Better him than the guys who do the White Sox games.

I like John and Susan - they know polysyllabic words and opera songs, too. But "swishaliscious"? Sometimes you gotta roll your eyes!

So the Yankees sent down Ramiro Pena to make room for Eric Hinske? Why did they send down Pena instead of Ransom? Even if Ransom is out of options, I feel that Pena is a far more important piece for this team than Ransom. I don't understand why they made that move...

Pena needs more AB's to develop as a player, he wasn't getting that with the Yanks. Personally, I would have liked to see Ransom dumped as well, he's just a waste of space on this roster. He can't hit andhis experience at 3B is limited.

Hopefully Pettite's start tonight will be better than his last game against Atlanta. Petitte is either hot or he's not. The longer he goes the more difficulty he gets into. He's usually good for 5 innings and when he gets pushed beyond that he gets into trouble. HOpefully the offence will kick in tonight as well. They need this win with the Sox beating Baltimore earlier today.

How many double plays have the Yankees hit into lately? Instead of getting man on base home they hit into a double play that wipes out a possible rally and ends the inning. It really is happening on a regular basis. Petitte looks like he's tiring already and throwing too many pitches. Why isn't Henske playing 3rd base tonight instead of Ransom? Would add a new hitter and probably a more effective one than Ransom.

Bah, Pettitte just squandered the lead again. How many home runs are these Yankees pitchers going to give up this year? Man...

IT'S AN A-BOMBBBBBBBBBB, FROMMMMMM A-RODDDD!!!! hahahahahahaha

A-Rod strikes again! (Props to Johnny D and Melky, too.)
Oh, yeah: Ransom has got to go.

How about "A tater from Gardner!"?

Looks like it's gonna be Aceves instead of Bruney for the 8th inning. I prefer to see Aceves instead of Bruney.

Also, Ransom should be the one that demoted/DFA instead of Pena! Pena is much better than Ransom.

Pettite pitched a very solid game, 7 innings and allowed two runs, huge improvement from his last start against Braves. Hopes the bullpen gets the job done!

7 in a row! (Too bad the O's blew an almost sure thing today...)

laib87 - I like it +++ "A tater from [the] Gardner!". +++ I can hear John saying it! LOL. But where did "tater" come from, anyway? That's one of those sports terms I've wondered about. Anybody know?

I don't think there are any options to send Ransom down and, as Matt said, Pena needs to develope. I read that he will even get some time in the OF while in AAA, particularly CF, and become one of those play anywhere super utility types. Ransom will not play very much at all!
