Jeter thinks Manny could fit

Derek Jeter hosted his sixth annual Turn 2 Holiday Express event last night in Central Park, spreading some cheer to 500 local children who were rewarded for academic achievements with a private evening of skating under the city lights and the snowy evergreens. It was cold, but the kids really seemed to enjoy themselves.

Jeter stopped on the 'red carpet' to answer a few questions about baseball, and obviously the Manny Ramirez bullets were flying. Jeter said he makes it a point not to comment too much about rumors and players who aren't yet on his team, but said he thinks Ramirez could fit into the Yankee dynamic:

"We've had some free personalities through the years," Jeter said. "David Wells was his own person, [Jason] Giambi was his own person, [and] Johnny [Damon is] his own person. There's a lot of different personalities that play on our team.

"It's just when you're out on the field, you're trying to accomplish one thing, and we welcome people with their own personalities."

Well, you heard it from the captain himself. Maybe we're overblowing the offense thing a little... especially when our glaring need was pitching. One big bat wouldn't hurt though, and now that Teixeira will be making a decision ( I hope he becomes a Red Sox ) it might pressure the FO o go get Manny. They've got Jeter's " O K ".

Jeter speaks, people listen? Good luck if you get Manny - you'll need it!

I'm another who wonders how much of the "Manny" thing could be attributed to the voracious Boston press or Red Sox mishandling. What can be read into the fact that he refused to speak to Boston journalists for at least the last few years? And one winter the Sox put their absolute best hitter on irrevocable waivers? Just how was that justified? I regret that I only started reading the Globe and Herald and contributing to Brownie Points one year ago or I might understand the distaste better.

There's press and then there's just watching Manny. As Yankee fans we watched Manny refuse to swing the bat at three Mo pitches with the game on the line striking out looking. We've seen Manny lolly-gag down the first base line on a "home run" that turns out to be off the wall. The Boston press probably exaggerated a bit about Manny but we've seen him do things that I don't want any part of. No Manny in the Bronx.

PB,
OK. But did we see the same in a Dodger uniform? Will he do the same anywhere while his enthusiasm is high in 2009 or 2010? I think not, but for us, why risk it? There has to be a cheaper bat and a better fielder! I'd rather have Abreu back!!!

it's madness...
get the older player with the suspect behavior...
reject the younger player in the position you need and let your division rival get him...
i don't like it...
but if the Yankees are not going to get Teixeira then i guess i'd have to say get Manny...
but it could blow up in their faces...
i hope we see the Manny of the Dodgers and not the Manny of the Red Sox...

Supposedly, we'll find out today where Teixeira's going. Then it'll be The Manny Show, front and center.

sign Manny now - he will take us over the hump - Tex will NOT! He will fold in NY! Manny lives for this stage - has anyone bothered to check his #'s at Yankee stadium? He bats over 400!

Manny addresses one issue with the Yankees, Tex does multiple, we need a 1B and we need a bat, we do not need a lazy, aging, poor defensive, outfielder no matter how good his bat is. I believe the Yankees and Cashman are doing the same thing they did with another Boras client Carlos Beltran, they told Boras when Tex is ready to make a deal call us and we'll put an offer in if we think we can convince him to come on over. Manny is a bum, Tex is player the Yankees need if they're serious about getting a high priced bat.

Tex has had good numbers in the last few years but I hope its not like Beltran and the Mets..He hasnt done zip in NYC and I hope that Tex doesnt have that problem...New York is THE BIG STAGE and it can be very humbling to players that cant adapt...case in point...Beltran...Randy Johnson...and I would say Giambi...he never had a year like he had his last year in Oakland before we got him...Getttin Manny I think might be ok for a year or 2 but not long term He isnt gettin younger ya know...LETS JUST HOPE Tex adapts well..cause the Prelimanary line up looks pretty darn good...

It's great we have Mark Teixeira in the fold now...
i am a bit concerned about centerfield though....
it is not a given that Austin Jackson is the real deal...
i'd give him 2 years more at double a...
and get either ichiro or mark kotsay...for two years...
the yankees have an abundance of young players/pitchers
enough to land ichiro...let's face it the seattle mariner's are going nowhere for at least 2 years...will probably be rebuilding anyway...i feel ichiro wants a taste of the play offs before he retires..speed,getting on base, ocassional extra base threat..scrappy hitter..
my original opinion was to trade a package of players for mcclouth...but the yankees spending big bucks recently might eliminate the option for another big contract when mcclouth is eligible to become a free agent..one-two years?
in this way either ichiro or kotsay can play centerfield for 2 years as a regular and bring up jackson a year from now to be back up..
