Swish! Yanks get their New York Nick
Brian Cashman made one point clear on the conference call yesterday announcing the Nick Swisher trade -- if the season started today, Swisher would be the Yankees' Opening Day first baseman. Sure, they'll toy with the idea of signing Mark Teixeira, but clearly they view Swisher as more than a bench player capable of playing the outfield spots and some first base.
Even though the Yankees have some $80 million coming off the books this offseason, they aren't planning to be using unlimited funds. They've made a decision to push their chips in front of an ace-type starting pitcher, and with players able to discuss financial terms beginning today, C.C. Sabathia should expect to have the opportunity to become a very rich man in the near future.
Here's some great stat-based analysis of the deal. The Yankees wanted a patient hitter with Jason Giambi and Bobby Abreu both likely gone, and they got the Major League's leader in pitches seen per at-bat in '08. That's no coincidence. Swisher is also a switch-hitter and drew 334 walks over the last four seasons, tied for third-most in the AL.
But it's not all sunshine and roses -- if it was, the asking price would have been much more than Wilson Betemit and prospects. The White Sox got rid of a player who had disappointed them. Which Swisher shows up? The Yankees are in for three years, so they're banking it'll be the productive version from '06 and '07.

Hopefully this trade won't deter Mark Teixeira from coming to the Yankees. I think I would be more excited to see the Yankees sign Tex then CC or Burnett

Giambi in Nick Swisher
that's sad...the yanks seem to pull back at the worse times...they missed the Daisuke Matsusaka boat...they passed on Gil Meche...they declined to pick up Carlos Beltran and Kurt Schilling...but they give a 32year old Arod 10 years and 305 million...and Randy Johnson and Kevin Brown ridiculous amounts of money and time for those aging players...they are just stupid with their money...

I can't believe where the Yankees are going at this time. Didn't Cashman learn anything from last year's unsuccessful campaign??
Nick Swisher is NOT Yankee material. I hope he's used in a future package deal that takes him out of NY. If Abreu and Giambi are not coming back, we're losing 200 RBI's. Who will we get to replace that kind of production?
It's understood that front-line pitching is priority, but to overlook a pick up like Mark Teixeira would be disasterous.
Another thought: Melky Cabrera is no Yankee centerfielder. Package him with Swisher and others and move on. Come on Brian WAKE UP!!

Have we not learned from our mistakes in the past? I understand signing CC but why get tied up in longterm deals with other lower tier pitchers? Lowe is garbage, Burnett is Pavano 2.0 an injury waiting to happen. It makes more sense to re-sign Pettitte and Mussina with short deals, then when better starters come available we can jump on them and not be tied to Burnett and Lowe garbage for years to come. Maybe we get Peavy, maybe the Mets decide their commitment to Santana down the road isn't something they want to do anymore?

4. Randolph is better than any manager Oakland has ever had.

Well, the good news: Yanks are going to blow everybody away in FA in terms of CC, Burnett and Lowe. Bad news: it's Free Agency and players have their agendas.I think we'll sign two out of three and I'm sticking by my instict here, CC won't sign anytime soon, despite saying he wants to " end it quickly ", as in the FA thing. I think we'll have a better picture of our rotation by Monday, otherwise, sit tight for a cool off-season. We've already got a new member in Nick Swisher and we could have a couple more in Burnett, Sabathia or Lowe.

I don't see the yanks getting Texeira this year and as long as he doesn't end up in Boston I don't care. He's not worth the money... if it was pujols or someone I'd advocate the kind of contract Boras wants immediately but I just don't see the value for Tex
Report any abuse or spam
Now that I think about it, what could CC be waiting for? The Angels aren't going to let go of Teix to pursue him, Teix is their offseason priority; The Dodgers have the same dilemma with Manny, and if they did offer CC a lucrative contract, that leaves BIG holes everywhere else: SS, 2B, LF. They'll have virtually no money left to address their other needs. San Francisco has no chance, though they'll make feeble offer just for the sake of it. Unless the guy is totally anti- New York, we could have him by Monday, tops.
Then again, if us nutcase fans weren't so ... nutty and stopped going so crazy on our own players, maybe FAs wouldn't have to think about the move as much. We could make CC look 39 instead of 29 with our craziness, booing our own players. But that's New York I guess. We also offer the biggest chance at a championship too... we'll see what weighs on his decision more. Same thing with the media.
I wonder what he and Jeter spoke about that day.

My point isn't that they CANNOT sign CC, they can, BUT if they do sign CC, they'll have absolutely no money left to address those OTHER holes. You made my point even clearer Cashman. Unlike the Dodgers, us Yankees have the money to sign Sab ( that's his nickname if he a becomes a Yankee, I said it first! ) and Lowe and Teixeira. The Dodgers do not. They can barely sign their own Free Agents. They will not sign Sabathia-- Sab.

140 mill should set the bar for C.C...who else is going to bid that much...especially if they plan on getting other players to adress other needs...it seems like every team has multiple weakness so they shouldn't go after C.C. in order to have money for other pieces...and if thats so then the speculation about the yankees having to bid 160 to 175 mill will not happen...so maybe the Hank can push for Teixeira and get his brother Hal to give in...because a power switch hitter with a gold glove at 28...seems to insane to pass up...and he seems like a safer investment than an often injured Burnett and an aging Lowe...i would like to see them pick up two pitchers and Tex...but if they are only going to get two free agents...i'm kinda nervous about the 2nd pitching choices while letting Tex go to the Angels

Here's the deal Yankee fans and i hope the N.Y. Post story was just a smoke screen...but Brian Cashman said in an interview with them that Yankee fans have unrelistic expectation...he said something along the lines of...some fans think we are going to sign two or three big free agents and that is just unrealistic...and the article went on to say that Tex and C.C. would not be signed in the same year...and that they are not going to spend the whole 80 plus mill comming off the books and they are seeking to get their payroll down to around 190 mill...if that is true then this is just another claring example of how Brian Cashman messes up the best opportunities for the yankees...or how the collective brain trust can't seem to know when to spend big and not spend big...they took on old players with injury issues in Kevin Brown and Randy Johnson...while also giving him(R.J.) more money and an extention...in that same year they passed on Carlos Beltran...in a previous year they passed on signing Curt Schilling...who wanted to come to the Yankees...and ended up on Boston and whipping the Yanks in the ALCS...and we can't forget the ghost Jeff Weaver and Jose Contreras and Carl Pavano...but they missed the Daisuke Matsusaka boat and passed on free agent Gil Meche... and they could have let Igawa be claimed off waivers by the Giants...but they decided to keep him...hilarious...and they could have traded Pavano with two years left but they kept him...when he was finaaly cleared as healthy...he made like 2 or 3 starts and injured again...then they poured money into Roger Clemens and Kei Iawa...it just goes on and on...
and this seems to be the year they can really get good pieces in Tex and Manny but they seem to be unwilling to make all the moves...they had a 207 mill payroll last year and was going to add Santana's almost 23 mill to their budget...if theTwins would have except what the yanks offered in the trade...but this year they are going to pull back...it's amazing and where are they going to spend their money on lesser pitchers like Lowe or Burnett...
position players are usually much safer bets than pitchers...but it seems yet again...that the Yanks will risk the big money on either Lowe or Burnett but not Teixeira...and if they trade for Peavy how will that translate in the American league east...and he to has had his share of injuries...i know pitching is just a risky business...but why reject the gold glove first baseman with power and good average in Tex and why did they reject a centerfielder in Beltran who also has a gold glove a big arm power bat and speed...and who was willing to take less money and less years to come to the yanks...but pick up old Randy Johnson instead...they just seem to always spend the money in the wrong place and not spend it at the right time for the right people...it's mind boggling...
it is speculated the Yanks don't want Tex because they have to put Posada and or A-rod at first in the future but i say...force them to accept trades and get younger...they should have played hard ball with Arod and given him less years and money...like 20 to 25 mill over eight years...and they shouldn't be force to keep old players...making way more than there worth...the player got the big bucks he should at least except a trade...the Yanks should give up some cash so another team can afford whatever player not playing up to level of his contract and keep building...i just don't know about the yanks...throwing money in all the wrong places...to all the wrong people...
what will this year bring...
World Series Champions or another season without even making the playoff...

Fanatic, there's one less team in this bidding war: the Mets are officially out of it. Despite published reports about both NY teams going at it strong, the Mets have waved the white flag; Besides, they already have Santana. Brewers GM Doug Melvin says we simply " overbid " for Santana. That sounds like they are out of it as well. That 4 year/100 MM deal doesn't come close to 6/140 MM. No other offers stand so far.

In My View ...
I think the Nick Swisher trade was a good move by the Yankees ... Swisher is a "good" to "average" player, who is a switch-hitter, with power, who will draw many base-on-balls ... He will strikeout out a lot, though, and not hit for a high average ... But, just by trading away Wilson Betemit in the deal -- makes the move a very successful one !!! ... Now, hopefully, the Yankees are not serious about using Nick Swisher as our starting first baseman !!! ... Swisher is a perfect "bench-player" [something the Yankees have not had in recent years], who can "fill-in" at first; play all three outfield positions; pinch-hit; and, even DH in a few games !!! ... So, I say: No, No, No !!! -- to the idea of Nick Swisher being the Yankees starting first baseman !!! ... I truly believe the signing of Mark Teixeira is "A Must" move that the Yankees have to make ... Tex can be the Yanks first baseman for the next 7-10 years !!! ... Money should not be an issue in any deal the Yankees are considering !!! ... Last year the Yankees approached the first base - DH - PH - situation with an assortment of "Nick Swisher" type players [Duncan, Betemit, Ensberg, Sexson, Lane, etc, etc, etc.], and it was a major "failure" !!! ... Jason Giambi had some decent numbers last year -- but, I do agree it's time for Giambi to go ... So, the Yankees have a golden opportunity to clean up the mess at first base and sign a true "all-star" player for at least the next 7 years ... And, that player is Mark Teixeira !!! ... Also, I think it's really important for the Yankees to re-sign Bobby Abreu !!! ... How are they going to replace Abreu's .300 BA; 100+runs; 20 HR's; 80-90 Walks; and, 100+RBI's ??? ... The Yankees lineup will be very powerful in 2009, with: Jeter #2 ... Abreu #3 ... A-Rod #4 ... Tex #5 ... Nady #6 -- And, CC Sabathia as the ace of the starting rotation !!! ... Signing Tex, CC, and Abreu makes a lot of sense to me ... I just hope Hank and Hal Steinbrenner are listening, because they can make these moves happen !!! ... Money is not an issue for the New York Yankees ... Hank and Hal, do what George would do ... Pay whatever it takes to bring Tex and CC to the Yanks; and, re-sign Bobby Abreu !!! ... Go Yankees ... Number 27 in 2009 !!! ... Jimmy [27NYY]

Just thinking about how the Yankees lineup will look [in 2009] if the Yankees sign Mark Tex, and re-sign Bobby Abreu ... The following is a slight adjustment from my above comments: (1) Damon or Gardner [CF] ... (2) Jeter [SS] ... (3) Abreu [RF] ... (4) A-Rod [3B] ... (5) Mark Teixeira [1B] .... (6) Matsui [DH] ..... (7) Posada [C] ... (8) Nady [LF] ... (9) Cano [2B] -- Of course, the lineup would be a little different if Melky Cabrera or Nick Swisher were in the Lineup in CF ... But, having Mark Teixeira in the middle of the batting order, in addition to having [a healthy] Matsui and Posada in the lineup for a full year really gives the Yankees a much more powerful lineup then last year !!! ... Let's hope the Yankees consider Swisher as a "role player" off the bench; and, make the top offer to sign Mark Tex, who can be the Yankees starting first baseman for the next 7-10 years !!! ... Go Yankees !!! ... Jimmy [27NYY] http://baseballtheyankeesandlife.mlblogs.com/

I agree with your assessment bpark. Burn-ett would be too much of an injury risk over a four-five season contract and, in my preference, shouldn't be signed. Unless he takes three pricey seasons with an option, no-no for the Yanks. They're not listening though, as they've already launched contract offers to Burnett. Hopefully he can stay healthy if he does sign.
Lowe is a good number three guy behind a potential CC-Wang, one-two punch, but does he favor the Red Sox over us? Boston is said to be quiet this off-season with their only target being a spot-starter type ( although they already have that in Byrd ) and they have many candidates for their number five spot in Pauley, Buccholz and Masterson. We'll see though, as they may just swoop in and sign him if interest is mutual. Lowe's demands may scare the Sox away, he is 37.
Either way, we need two of these three to have a complete rotation, and then we need to re-up with Pettitte. He's what guys like Joba and Hughes need to mature into big-league aces. Amidst all of this discussion, it's hard to remember that those two will be part of the team's plans next season.
Here's what I think will happen:
CC
Wang
Burnett
Joba
Pettitte ( or Hughes if the Yanks decide to go another direction )
IMO, Swisher is due for a good comeback season. His average will be... average, but he's a great teammate, is hard nosed, brings a good glove to firstbase and the OF positions and hits about 25-30 homeruns a year. He hit 24 in Chicago and lost two months of playing time, remember.

So, Nick Swisher arrived, and there seem to be mixed opinions about it. In any case, it was useful, because it made Cashman to clarify a few points, and draw some conclusions, of which the most important are:
1) Although almost 90 million bucks are available thanks to all the guys who left, there is no intention at all to spend the whole amount. In fact, the 2009 budget won´t even reach the 200MM mark.
2) The money to be spent -60? 70? MM- will be for pitching, pitching, pitching.
3) If CC says OK to the Yankees, the rest of the money will be for another pitcher, or two cheaper pitchers. THERE IS NO WAY –He called it crazy- that there will be a package of “CC-Manny-Teixeira”.
4) If CC arrives, and maybe Lowe, or someone similar, Swisher, and Posada and Matsui (hopefully staying healthy all of 2009) will have to produce the 200 RBIs that Abreu and Giambi produced in 2008.
5) If CC does not come, then the game is open to get cheaper pitchers and maybe Manny or Teixeira or somebody else to play centerfield and/or first base.
The main bad news is that, if Teixeira, Manny, Nate McClouth, Hudson, etc. don´t come to the Yankees, they will go somewhere else, they won´t retire or stay home. And, today, without adding much, Boston and Tampa are VERY good teams. Or isn´t a Youkilis-Pedroia, or Peña-Iwamura great 1B-2B combos? And I am not convinced that Damon-Nady-Cabrera (or Gardner) are better than Bay-Ellsbury-Drew, or Crawford-Upton-Baldelli....

Pettitte is total garbage. He is near the end of his career and struggled badly this season while Lowe has shown he has a lot left in the tank. Only pitched three full seasons as a starter. First season he posted great ERA, second he posted a very average ERA, not near as bad as Pettitte's last season. No comparison between the two, Lowe's numbers are getting better while Pettitte's are getting worse regardless of the fact that Lowe has pitched in a much weaker league.

Also doesn't matter how much the Yanks offer Sabathia, there's still a good chance he could take less if his family is more comfortable in an area other than NY. No way is Lowe more than a #5 guy he would be good to have to fill out the rotation. wisher is more than a role player. He has good pop in his bat and has the flexibility teams like in a player. I think Yanks got him in the event they don't Teixeira or if they lose Abreu.

Sayonara Big D, thanks for all your effort with the Bombers! I know he wasn't going to be a real great pitcher for us but he had what a lot of this team has lacked, guts and fire... and that shouldn't be discounted or forgotten. Apparently Cashman had to pull a few strings to make it all workout but I wish him well.
I'm not comfortable really with Penny... he may be serviceable, but eh...
If we get Sabathia, that gives us Wang, Hughes, Chamberlain as 1-4, a fifth really isn't that hard to find as we know from our revolving door of a rotation. Pettitte or Mussina could fill that role and if we brought both back, then we have options to spell Chamberlain or even Hughes if he doesn't settle in very well. If we plan on letting Joba go back to the pen (why I DON'T know) then maybe we will still need a decent fifth in Lowe or whomever. Peavy wouldn't necessarily be a bad piece to our rotation, even being an NL'er. It doesn't matter what any of them have had go wrong with them previously, it's what's going to happen once they're HERE. I'd prefer to see inning eaters, we can't expect to have a staff of nothing but aces, so the key to me is having that BP stay rested and not be tore up before June.
I'm hoping Swisher isn't our ONLY answer to the offense. I know Godzirra being out hurt our lineup but our production was WAY down last year... that has to be co-rrected.

Lowe was a starter for three years in the AL, one good year, second year was another good one in terms of wins for him very average in ERA, last year was very average.

Knut, there are alot of DH/OF types out on the market like Milton Bradley and such that we could pursue for that offensive upgrade, BUT, with a rotation of CC, Wang, Burnett, Joba and Hughes, would we really need another pricey bat? It seems that we'll score much more next season because our regulars will be back and healthy ( hopefully ). We scored 789 runs-- yes, but we had guys like Morgan Ensberg, Justin Christian, Chad Moeller, and Chris Stewart in our lineup; A-Rod was injured, Posada was injured, Matsui was injured, Cano was hitting .241, same with Melky. With all of that trouble, I'm surprised we scored more than 780 runs.
A health lineup next year will get us back to 800 runs easily, and that'll be enough with a rotation that projects to allow four- five hundred runs. That's a run differential of two-three hundred; Maybe my analysis is a bit brisk, but that rotation next year will be a monster if everything goes through the right way.
Damon
Jeter
Swisher
A-Rod
Matsui
Nady
Posada
Cano
Gardner
Looks like a 800+ run offense to me, easily.

I doubt SwisherHouse bats 3rd, thats just me but we not done shopping anyway.
What would be really scary is if the Brewers retain CC and we stuck with Lowe and Burnett for the next 5 years.

It was fiction.

It really doesn't matter who pitches for us, we won't win games without run support and a strong bullpen....period point blank. Pettitte and Wang should not be losing games 2-1 or 1-0.

Brian Cashman said in not so many words we are not going after Tex and Manny definately out of the question...the Yanks seem comfortable with not pursuing Abreu...i guess they figure if the line they have does not suffer injuries and if Cano returns to form then with the pitching they aquire...they will be able to win...
that is a the stradegy...i guess they plan on winning alot of close games via pitching...
but if it fails i don't think the free agent narket will yield talent like this for quite some time...
the Yanks major problem was giving to Arods demands and signing him for sooooooooo long for soooooooo much money...they should never have given a 32 year old 305 million over 10 years...no matter what he did in the past...i don't think we will ever see 50 plus homers and 150rbi again...i doubt we'll see 45 140...so is he truly worth...27.5 mill a year and 5 mill homer bonuses for his milestones...i don't think so...everybodies gonna be sooooo mad about the Arod trade in the last 5 or 6 years of his contract...if the yanks don't find a way to dump him...

Is it true that San Diego wants Hughes, Kennedy, Jackson and Horne or Coke for Peavy? And who else? half of the team?
One question comes to mind: why would Cashman give for Peavy the same, or even MORE, than what he refused giving for Santana?
Give me a break...This year free agency is the best way to get what the team needs...

Thats the starting point for Peavy.
Numerous reports say we maybe playing mind games and fully intend SwisherHouse to play CF and Posada or free agent play first.

IF THE YANKS WANTED TO GO CHEAP FOR A FIRST BASEMAN...AND THEY WERE THINKING OF GIVING UP A BOAT LOAD OF PLAYERS...THEN WHY DIDN'T THEY TRY TO TRADE FOR...JUSTIN MORNEAU OR ADRIAN GONZALEZ...POSITION PLAYERS GET HURT LESS AND HAVE LONGER CAREERS..
I REALLY HOPE THE YANKS ARE NOT WILLING TO TRADE HUGHES KENNEDY JACKSON COKE AND HORNE...FOR PEAVY...I DON'T EVEN LIKE COKE AND HUGHES IN A TRADE FOR MOST PLAYERS IN THE LEAGUE...AND HOW WILL PEAVY WHO HAS HAD SOME INJURIES DEAL WITH PLAYING FAR FROM HOME IN THE AL EAST NO LESS...IT'S RISKY...
HUGHES KENNEDY JACKSON AND MELKY...I CAN UNDERSTAND FOR PEAVY...BUT NOT WITH COKE IN IT...OR HORNE...IT JUST SEEMS LIKE TO MUCH

The reason I'm concerned about the loss of Abreu is just that, because Godzirra and Po were hurt a good deal of the year. Wouldn't it seem just a bit prudent to factor in that possibility happening again? If they go down again and we don't have a consistent guy like Abreu despite his defensive shortcomings at the wall, our production could suffer more than it did from last years to this year in which we lost about 100-200 Runs as it was. I mean I like both of those guys, clutch and good team-mates, but you also have to figure their fragility. I know pitching is the priority and rightfully so but we can't discount the production. Nady and Swisher in place of Abreu and Giambi isn't exactly making me shiver in my boots. Maybe we break even but we could use a little more insurance is all I'm saying. :D

your right...D
the Yankee management has decided despite the fact that the yanks are one of the oldest line ups in the league that they are good as far as runs...so we'll see...
but i think that injuries are a real possibility...and nobody gets in runs on the DL....
thats why i really hope they go out and get Teixeira...

Swisher? Remember 1st base last year? This position hasn't been stable since Tino. I'd love to add Teixeira as the Yanks true everyday 1st baseman and bat him behind A Rod. Don't need Manny and the drama. Losing Abreu and Giambi's Hr's & RBI's is a hugh hole and if Cashman thinks having Swisher and getting an aging Posada back will make up for the lost bats, then I'll become a friggin Dead Sox fan! Unreal! Trade Cabera and Matsui along with Kennedy and get Peavy and Sheets? and Burnett. I would consider signing Petitte for 1 year, but not at 16mil. Maybe 10/11mil? I'd keep Hughs and go from there. I hope this Swisher thing is just a ploy. Make Tex-man and 2 starting Pitchers a must. Swisher can platoon in left/ dh/ and ? The Yanks need Tex..Man's bat and glove.
