Cashman begins working the phones
The Yankees have had an early start working the phones. One avenue they pursued was calling the Houston Astros, reports the Boston Globe, to check and see if Roy Oswalt or Lance Berkman would be available in a trade. They were not.
Meanwhile, if the Yankees are ready to try and turn Ian Kennedy around for some other talent, the Texas Rangers could be interested. Before you go and get too excited -- and yes, we've actually heard this proposal every week from fans since the All-Star Game -- Josh Hamilton isn't exactly being dangled for a trade.
It appears the Yankees will not pick up Damaso Marte's $6 million option, though that does not necessarily mean they don't want the left-hander back. If they offer him arbitration and Marte signs elsewhere, the Yankees could score two compensation draft picks, something to certainly think about.

In looking at the Texas roster, there are only a few players worthy of consideration: Davis, Young, Blalock, Salty, Teagarden, Ramirez, Hamiltion and maybe Byrd. Of that group, only Hamilton is a proven star at a needed position while Teagarden (c) is supposed to be an excellent prospect who looked good in his first ML stint. If it is not Hamilton or Teagarden, woudn't the Yankees be better served by using Kennedy in a package for a stud? Everyone else fits in the category of okay prospect, oft injured players or sketchy track record. While all of the aforesaid guys are worth a look, I don't think the Yankees should give up such an important pawn as Kennedy unless a stud can be had. If the Yankees are willing to trade Kennedy, why not use him to get Laroche, McLouth, Peavy, Fielder, F. Hernandez, Greinke, V. Martinez (who might be had because of Shoppach's rise and Martinez' injury) or someone of that ilk? Personally, I don't think Kennedy has a skin for the Yankees and should be traded but only for a key starting caliber player or top prospect (e.g. Teagarden, Matt Laporta, Mat Gamel, etc.)

The Oswalt thinking is saving money? Not being sold on Sabathia and Burnett? Saving money to use on Manny?

The Yankees should make a bid for one of the Texas catchers...if only to inflate what Boston will wind up trading for them. I can't think Kennedy has a lot of value left in any trade, maybe Oakland will take him as part of a package for Duchscherer but I doubt it.

I have seen this posted before here. Am I missing something? Boston has a good young catcher that they caused them to get rid of Wakefield's personal catcher, they also are trying to re-sign Varitek to a 2 year deal.

I think I asked this last year, what happens if eligible players don't file for free agency?
