The dismantling begins
The press dining room in the bowels of Yankee Stadium has always been sort of a wall-to-wall gallery of moments from the Yankees' past, with framed photos of Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, the Babe, Joe D. -- all the people you'd imagine should be there. There was a big poster of Don Mattingly and Hal Chase, for example, and more recently, there was a display of the new stadium and the 3D models of what it would look like. This was also the room where the postgame news conferences were held during the playoffs.
So imagine the surprise today when I came down the steps from the press entrance and it was all gone -- just bare white walls and the dusty outlines of where the photos had been. It was a pretty jarring sight. Apparently the photos were removed sometime on Monday -- so for the six games that are left to go here in the Bronx, the dinners and brunches will be a little less picturesque, shall we say.
News updates from the Stadium: Robinson Cano is back in the lineup after a heart-to-heart talk with Joe Girardi. "I think Robbie is ready to be great again," Girardi said. ... Hideki Matsui will postpone his surgery until at least after the Yankees' final game on Sunday. "For me, it's going to be a very special day," Matsui said. "I'd like to be able to play."

I'll tell Ya that Girardi he is something Special! What a Macho Man! I guess Cano understands now? This will make A HUGE difference in the Yankees Year! No wait you WILL see!! Promise I really do!

Boy Michael Kay getting Bittchy about Jeters Bunt. What a LITTLE Girl he is. Maybe Michael if they played small ball SOONER they MIGHT have a better record and maybe they would NOT be playing Golf in October.
KISS ***** Kay really has to GO!

I don't mind Jeter's bunting too much anymore because I think it forces these Yankee hitters to hit with RISP. They haven't been good at it all season, yes, that's true. However you can't just avoid a situation like that just because people haven't been doing it well. They need to LEARN how to do it well. Arod's a career .304 hitter with RISP and considering he's driven in 100 runs in pretty much every year of his career he knows how to do it. This year's just been a bust for him (and plenty other Yankees) in that department. You can't let teams off the hook because they've had trouble in that situation. You need to keep putting yourself in that situation and learn how to break through.

And erickson,
Kay's been bittchy since the All-Star break. I actually like Kay a lot, but lately he's been way too critical. If someone fails to do one little thing he's all over them as if it's their fault this team won't make the playoffs. It's one season of underachievement. Shed your tears and move on. Actually, I've been happy with the way the Yankees have been playing lately. Aceves looks to have a good future. Gardner almost looks like a baseball player. Girardi's taking it to the young guys (FINALLY). I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens next year.

Afraid we are seeing the demise of a once great Yankee pitcher. Not sure Andy has it anymore. IF he's resigned they might want to move him into middle relief.

Well maybe Girardi can learn something from Kay.Maybe Girardi should have been more critical this year. And you are right WHAT took Girardi SO LONG to start acting like a manager. Its just NOT me wanting to know but most of the Writers and Announcers are also wondering? The problem goes way beyond underachievement with this team though.
I also agree with the bunting and situational hitting they should have tried more throughout the year, ALOT MORE.

I think if they can a "Bernie deal" out of Andy that'll be good. He's obviously not totally done, but I'd still like to have him as a 5th starter. If he signs for like 1 year 1 million I'm fine with that. Beyond that might be a stretch though.

seeknay,
I agree with you. Andy Pettitte should RETIRE at the end of the year. He has lost it, we can NOT afford to bring him back next year UNLESS we want a REPEAT of this year.

I'm totally willing to give Girardi a pass on this season because coming from Florida to NY is about a big of a jump as you can have. He's getting used to things. However, NEXT year is a HUGE year for him. He'll need to show more.
Report any abuse or spam
Oh they will start him next year but if he starts slow he's out. Girardi has NO wiggle room after this year, what a discrace. Still can not believe he cried when Farnsworth was traded though. I think that really changed my mind about him just shows weekness! But he HAS to GROW BALLS early next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Report any abuse or spam
I still think he is a VERY week manager and needs a GOOD bench coach to help him out!!! Maybee that will help him make better descisions...

AND please nobody bring up the injuries this year, that just shows ignorance of the game. Every team has injuries and fights through it!!!!!!!!!!
Report any abuse or spam
Back to Andy, listen I like him alot BUT we need to get younger, we can NOT keep running pitchers out there that are tired, he was GREAT for NEW YORK but his time has come, Just like Jeters will someday!
Report any abuse or spam
Well you can't fight through injuries by signing Ponson et al. More starting pitching needed... that's why I'd sign Pettitte, on a one year deal, you can never have too much starting pitching

I was not watching but I heard Giambi came through again! What a piece of CRAP!

Yeah that Girardi is really special! He even has some of you snowed! PEOPLE he was a BRUTAL MANAGER this season. I'm not sure what you Girardi fans have been watching but it certainly wasn't GOOD BASEBALL! He took a 200 million plus team and led them into 4th place and some of you guys are saying he did a good job??? They actually won what 3 in a row when it doesn't even matter and this is good? He actually took 1 of his millionaires and scolded and benched him, what , about 120 games too late. He did not have a clue on how to manage this team from the beginning and now is being given the opportunity to do it again. He must be good at something but it certainly wasn't managing this ball team!
Report any abuse or spam
You can slag off Girardi all you want but all I see is this: the Yankees have an awful starting pitching staff. You can't outscore the opposition if they score 5/6 runs every night
Report any abuse or spam
midnite,
I have been saying that ALL year! But you still get the Idiots on here that will fight you tooth and nail. Remember he was not a GOOD player just average, not Hall of Fame material, how can you lead a bunch of Future HOF'ers and NOT know how to make the right moves in a game , and gain the respect of the players, Oh yea you bench one 150 games into the season, Late very late, OH yea I respect him also. Like I said in the begining of the season he is a Mental Midget who is in WAY over his head. Like I said before, crying because the organization trades a Crappy pitcher like Farnsworth you lose ALOT of respect from people around you also. HE HAS TO GO....
Report any abuse or spam
candyrunts,
I guess you have NOT been watching this year. The players did not hit when they NEEDED to... Pitching was not the problem. Hitting with runners in scoring position was the problem and it is well documented. Girardi Has to go! He is WEAK and not experienced enough to manage the Yankees. If you tell me they will get a STRONG bench coach to help him out I will give him the first month next year, but if he stumbles he MUST GO, Rember this is a BIG business NOW as ****** as it is it still is a business and they must run it that way!

I am still waiting to here from all you Girardi fans, I need to know 3 things he did right this year? I have been waiting for 2 days now. I guess it will take a couple of days to figure this out. Just let me know!!

Erickson
I agree with you completely. This was supposed to be a Special Year for the Yanks and instead they go and hire this clown. How can anyone in their right mind say that Girardi did a good job when he led a team with a 200 million plus payroll to a 4th place finish. He was brutal when it came to offensive game strategies. I really do not remember more than maybe a handful of times where they actually attempted a sac bunt with a runner on first or first and second with nobody out. Instead they would hit into a double play. It is no wonder they scored 2 or less runs in 47 games so far this year. He was brutal in managing the bullpen as he was almost always 1 batter too late in making a pitching change. There were so many instances of mental mistakes and/or lazy play defensively as well, such as Cano the other night. There were quite a few games wereby I was embarrassed to be a Yankee fan and I've been 1 for over 40 years. The above kind of play is a direct result of a terrible Manager and that leads to the players losing respect and confidence in their manager which leads to even poorer play, which is what we unfortunately witnessed this season. What is even worse is the Steinbrenners are bringing him back for more of the same next season. That is unbelievable. The only person you can blame more for this lousy excuse for a baseball season is Cashman because he put him there!

Cano 0-4 in his return. Still won't draw a walk unless it is intentional.

I don't doubt Pudge will be gone after the season. Giambi ditto. He'll go somewhere to be a part-time player/DH in the AL Central somewhere. Maybe he can end his career at Oakland? You all can call of Andy's head if you want. You were all doing it for Moose last year. Andy knows how to pitch in NY. He's NEVER had a losing season in his career and I believe this season will be no different. I think he gets a year with an option for maybe $5M per? Moose will get something similar although I wouldn't be surprised if they go 2 years on him. He's been durable. He was never an overpowering thrower so likely his body and arm aren't as worn as someone who was. At 40 this year, I still give him a chance next year. Expect our rotation after the last pitch this season to at least look like Wang, Moose, Andy. That's 3 of 5. I still think they want Hughes in the rotation but his performance these next couple weeks is key. Let's not forget Aceves. The problems with CC and Burnett are that they'll only cost money so we could have a pitching glut again. We'll see. I'd have to guess that IPK, and IPKei will find themselves in some trade deal, perhaps for another OF'er or somoene for 1b? With Damon and Jorge tho, I think we'll have another platoon situation. I'd rather we sign a good OF'er and put Damon at 1b full time. My opinion. Maybe Gardner plays some winter ball somewhere and comes out a slugger? Who knows.

The only name I left off was Joba. I say he becomes the 7th inning man, going 2 innings per appearance as a way to build up innings and get work in. Mo's not going anywhere for a few years now. But I can see a time when perhaps he is not saving EVERY game? Again, we'll see...

The 2009 Yankees look very different from the 2008 team. Giambi and his sweet mustache needs to go, along with Pudge, Pavano, Abreu, and I have a feeling that Pettite will retire. I also feel that we need to trade away Damon, to make room for Gardner. He and Melky need to man the outfeild, along with Nady. Teach Melky and Garder how to drop down a bunt and thats a nice addition to our team that we did not have this year.

Todd,
I'm starting to think you are a total fraud. You say "I have been saying that all year" and "Like I said in the beginning of the season" when you actually are a new comer along with Midnite. And without difficulty or much reflection, I can recall two moves (pinch hitting Giambi and pinch running Gardner) from the final Boston game that Girardi did right this year. So stuff that in your hat and pull it down over your ears!!!

No matter what, you guys love the yankees. In my opinion, Giradi is not the answer. But at the same time Brian Cashman was wrong for putting him in a situation were he could not win. It is very difficult for a player to become manager on a team he played with less then 4 years ago. he maybe good when the old guard retires( mo, jete, etc.)
Bad Judgement again Cashman. If he wins, Torre team, if he loose, well he lost. Larry Bowa would have been a good manager for the yankees, he would have throwed whoever is not doing their job under the bus. larry has learned from his prevouis mistakes, a little older, wiser and would have been all over Cano, Melky, Hughes and kennedy ***.

I see an OF of Damon Cabrera, and most likely Abreu since there are no FAs who are a real good option on the market right now. No way Gardner will be on the ML roster right now as he is far from ready. Besides, if they were going to start him next season they would have started giving him more ABs a while ago. Most likely see him starting next season in SWB.
The rotation will most likely look like Sabathia, Wang, Chamberlain, Hughes ( or Sheets or Burnett but both are high risk as injury prone pitchers), and possibly Mussina or Lowe as the No.5 starter. Pettitte is pretty much on his last leg as a starter and won't be bought back doesn't matter if he knows how to win or not. His stats are bloated and his skills are declining, can't be relied on to be a stopper anymore since he can't win on a consistent basis.
Not sure if Bowa would have been a great match for this team, he's been fired twice from other teams as manager, and his former player didn't like him.

I wish we could count on Sabathia signing with us and Chamberlain starting in April. I've got a feeling there will be some names we never heard of in the mix for the 2009 rotation. One we know could be Aceves!

The title of this blog got my hopes up until I read the article. I was hoping this team got dismantled. Girardi is going to need more than just a good bench coach next season. Maybe if he had the staff Coach T had last season the outcome would've been better. That and a better team first roster. Damon is no answer for 1B. Are you kidding? He barely catches lazy grounders in the OF. What will he do with an Ortiz smash down the line w/ a runner on 3rd? He won't field it for 1 & 2 his noodle arm won't make it to the plate. '09 will not fare much better.

Robert,
You are right I am new here well about 4 months, SEEMS longer I guess with this team! I have been saying it though since I started here, and on the other boards I have been on. My view of Girardi and his Staff WILL NEVER CHANGE ! MENTAL MIDGET!!!!!
However You only mentioned 2 things that he has done and maybe questionable at that, you have had what 3 days now. Meanwhile posters like me and quite a few more have been rattleing off MORE INPORTANT ITEMS that he has FAILED MISERABLY AT!!! So bad that they also were picked up by many writers from NY to LA. ( not picked up from us I am sure) There are going to be people who love him and hate him(ME ONE) I guess hate is too strong let me clarify DISLIKE HIS STYLE AND OR LACK OF, he has alot to learn, I do NOT think he should be learning HERE with the Yankees- Let him learn with a team like Pittsburgh or Washington ect. LIKE I HAVE BEEN SAYING ALL YEAR he has to go and was the wrong manager for the NEW YORK YANKEES!!!! I KNOW you agree by the emails you send me, I think the Yankees can do and WILL do MUCH better with someone else...
