Not so nice after Giese

Dan Giese had a wonderful homecoming -- at least, until he walked off the mound. Then the Riverside, Calif. native saw something he never envisioned while playing out big league dreams in the yard, watching the Yankees bullpen serve up 10 runs as they struggled to record the last six outs of the game, en route to an 11-4 pounding.

I was in the car listening to the WCBS broadcast and couldn't believe it. Hit after hit after hit. You'd have never thought, looking at just the final score, that Giese actually left with a 3-1 lead. Here are the culprits: Jose Veras (1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER), Edwar Ramirez (0+ IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER), Dave Robertson (1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER).

That's just unacceptable for a playoff contender who believes that their bullpen is their strength. Andy Pettitte gets a chance to salvage a game this afternoon against Joe Saunders before the Yankees wing it to Minnesota, where I'll meet the team after a strange week of global feature writing.

It's a crying shame that Geise pitched his heart out, only for our pen to fall apart. It appeared that they were pitching batting practice. I found it differcult to believe that our pen could pitch so bad! These are the same guys that were being applauded for helping carry the team when our starters faulted. I do hope they will improve for todays foray with the Halos. I'm hoping Andy will pitch a great game, also that he will get past the 1st couple of innings unscathed. His last starts have not been good. We need him more than ever to win today and continue to pitch well or we can kiss the 2008 season goodbye.
"GO YANKEES!"

Yankees need to pick up some starting pitchers from waivers, for example Washburn, Paul Byrd, somebody!!!!
I think that we can still win the wild card!

If the Cashman is smart, he will pick up both Wasburn and Byrd ( I know, kind of crazy but any type of help is good right now. ) Byrd is 4-0 with a 1.42 ERA, which he says he credits to a mechanical change in his winedup. Jarrod Washburn would be a great addition as well since he is a lefty and can silence bats like Ortiz and Garrett Anderson.

If these moves aren't made and Cashman stays put, well that sends the message that we don't really care for making the playoffs this year. Unless he has other plans in mind, like promoting from within, but that wouldn't make sense for a playoff push.

Look for these two key moves to tell us what this organization has in mind for the remainder of the season.

It's as easy as picking apples from a tree at this point.

It's fading fast. We need to win 65-70% from here to take the wild card.
Pitching would help, sure, but this team has some issues that go deeper. The extent of the injuries and the inability to drive in runs reflects a problem of some sort that Washburn and Byrd won't solve.

Just reported on the YES Network ...

Ian Kennedy was sent down to AAA-SWB !!! ... Great News !!! ... Jimmy [27NYY] ...

http://baseballtheyankeesandlife.mlblogs.com/

I would not mind him staying down there and released at the end of the season. It appears to me that this brat has a dose of Carl Pavano attitude with an I don't give a dam mentality. Like Pavano it appears Ian does not want to pitch in NY and is only collecting a paycheck. Ship him out and hold Crashman responsible for keeping him last off season.

jhtravers ...

I totally agree !!! ... Ian Kennedy "should not" pitch another game for the New York Yankees !!! ... Brian Cashman should do whatever it takes to trade [or, release] Ian Kennedy ... Kennedy has disrespected the whole Yankees Organization, his teammates, and the Yankee fans ... He is not a true Yankee, and has no idea what "Winning Yankees Tradition" is all about !!! ... Good Bye, Mr. Kennedy !!!

If I remember correctly, earlier in the season wasn't Ian like really distraught over not pitching well, like he was complaining to Phil Hughes about the pressures of NY, he was messing with Hughes’ head too, so now he's acting like he doesn't care, the extreme opposite of before. I can't figure this dude out, too bad. Anyway good luck to the Yankees today and enjoy the rest of your Sunday Yankee fans.

i read that Manny Ramirez wants to be a Yankee.. the Dodgers are not gonna pick up his option after the season, and Manny will be a free agent..he wants to 'get back at' the Red Sox

http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/26123983/

Level Boss,

I like Manny being Manny in LA! He is a great hitter but I don't think he will cut his hair and be a team player. He is awful in the outfield and would only be a DH. I would pass!

Yeah Strike'em out and throw'em out!!! Molina does a good job behind the plate.

Yeah,

Let Manny stay in L.A., or any place else ... The "Manny Show" will not play in New York - or, at least, not with the Yankees ... It will very interesting to see what team is willing to give "such a selfish and self-centered" player like Manny Ramirez a "Four-Year / $100 Million contract ???

Good move sending Kennedy to AAA. Leave him there until the end of the season and then move him in a trade.

I never thought I'd ever say this about a team, but the yankees are a fundamentally retarded team. RETARDED. why are they so stupid? did they forget how to play baseball? Where was sexon on that?

FIRE SALE. I've had it. get rid of anyone who doesn't want to play sound baseball. Start with kennedy and work up from there.

I think poor coaching as well!

its amazing how Andrew Brackman is collecting a paycheck based on speculation.

Brackman was really good at NC State as a closer. He threw 95-100 mph fastball!

I can't believe that the Angels have two really good centerfielder in Torre Hunter and Gary Matthews Jr. I wish the Yankees had one! We have never replaced Bernie Williams!

Good Inning for Yanks! Molina comes up big again! Cano dink saved a run as well!

oh how annoying. runner stranded at third...again....

Brackman WAS, really good at NC state. Key word "was". he just ahd TJ surgery and there is no tlling if he'd throw 100mph again. Some people don't recover well from surgery...I know Rivera did just fine...

Arod fails again in clutch situation. For those who do not know Reggie was Mr. October, but Thurman Munson was Mr. August and Mr. September. He always drove in runs with two outs in clutch situations!!!

there is no way we get byrd now because the Tribe may keep him.

gooch, lay off the guy! I didn't see jeter driving in damon from second.

I'm rooting for Brackman!!! But you are right about TJ surgey. I can't believe that 12 & 13 kids are having the Surgey. I read article why there are not many great pitchers anymore is because LL coaches are burning them up before they grow up!

Hey-sus!!!
its not like they are pounding pettite with massive bombs all over the place. lucky hits all of them.

yeah gooch, you so right. don't have kids throwing curve balls.

Micahel,

Jeter did move Damon from second to third! Munson used to bat about .250-280 every year, but always got clutch hits. Arod has proved over and over he can't produce in the clutch. I would put him down in the order to take pressure off! But the Yankees won't do that because they pay him to much money. Billy Martin would bench Arod like he did Reggie and it Might get him fire Arod up!

I can see it now: tied up 3-3 bottom of the ninth-Mo gives up a bomb to Vlad.

That was scary! Andy is tough as nails!!!

Let's get Andy some runs!!!

ONCE AGAIN, the Yankees are at the later part of the game - ONCE AGAIN with a chance to win - and ONCE AGAIN an ooportunity to blow it

the first game i think the Yankees were one run down at this point.. yesterday, one run up at about this point.. we'll see what Girardi and the bullpen decide to do

Molina please Bunt!

Good Job Molina!

i was talking about how he didn't get a hit. He SO could have gotten him in if he was on his game.

damon just struck out w/ man on third and 1 out. BAD.

no breaks!!! freaking jeter gets no breaks. plus, he really can't drive the ball...so he needs some to fall in. THIS SUCKS!!

With Damon I would have suicide squeese bunt!

More failures to hit with RISP. What is wrong with these guys?

Jeter had a good at bat but got jammed! Still, Yankees to be a good team need to get two out hits with runners in scoring position. Andy has kept us in the game!

Hey, Michael ...

AWESOME COMMENTS ON LOU GEHRIG, a couple of days ago !!! ... The Great Yankees Tradition makes it fun to be a Yankees fan !!! ... Go Yankees !!! ... Jimmy [27NYY] ...

http://baseballtheyankeesandlife.mlblogs.com/

great job, Andy! if Girardi had left Giese in yesterday for the 7th, then maybe it would have been different

Cano makes another great play with that tag!

Arod needs to swing for the yard!!!

now x has to get alex in from second...

Oh no. They got a RISP. I can't watch.

A Rod was SAFE

Dumb with X man at bat!!!

he was safe the umps blew another call. thats 4 this series. How can you win?

Napoli was not PERFECT in his throw. I hate these announcers. They can't even admit the umps blew it. Yeah, he put a tag on him...after his hand was on the bag!!!!You can't be anymore safe then that. He tagged him on the elbow after rodriguez got the bag.

another blown call. How can you even compete in close games when these calls are so bad???

yeah, that blown call cost us the lead. Cano flies out...
4 calls like that this weekend. Aweful. We will lose this game because of that.

no, smart! He made a good play to try to snag third. Its smart because if he makes it (which he did) then nady still walks and maybe cano still gets the fly-out-4-3 yanks w/ 2 outs and man on 1st. The umps blew the call. 4 times

amazing-now tex walks. game is over. now freaking angels announcers are talking about Joba staying in the bullpen....what a collection of rectums! He was brilliant as a starter.

well, it was a solid game.. until now..here's where Anaheim wins :(

aren you KIDDING me? Marte to face two monster righthanders? This is a train wreck waiting to happen.

He was already in scoring position. I hear no guts no glory, but I would have taken my chances with x man and Sexson!

No, I still think it was the right move. put pressure on the defense and pitcher w/ 1 out. thats the correct move-steal 3rd to get in on a sac fly. He got hosed on the call.

The angels are getting EVERY call in this series. EVERY call.

woo! Marte got through a tough stretch of that lineup
now put in Giambi in place of Sexson

good game too bad andy will get no decision.

attaboy marte. WHEW. I am proud that one guy in this bullpen pulled his head out of his butt long enough to get three outs before giving up a run.

I think Paul Byrd would have been a nice pick up, but thats just me with my 20/20 hindsight.

why Betemit? why not Giambi????

So LB, you'd rather see Gaimbi strike out the sexon? They both suck.

good call level boss but where is Giambi?? He can go yard!

oh no. So they would rather see betemit strike out instead of sexon AND giambi. 0-2 already. Yeah, lets pad f-rod's stats here.

Betemit sucks worse then anything could ever suck in the entire world ever. He just LOOKED at that last strike.

OK Betemit move was for defense! Good Job Girardi!

Giambi has a better chance at getting a jack

How the...?

he couldn't hit that if he had a 9-iron!!! that is such bullsnit I can't even believe this. That pitch to christian was low AND inside!!! it wasn't even close!!!! 5 blown calls!

crap! if the Yankees can get to the 10th, then at least K-Rod would start at 17 pitches already

betemit for defense? Huh? Is girardi crazy? You don't need to have him come in until the bottom of the inning! Sexon could strike out just as well as betemit-and he can hit one out (maybe)....these umps suck and there is no way we are winning this game now. what the hell? two aweful calls and F-Rod is throwing his arms up like he just won the WS? CAN WE LET JOBA DO THE SAME THING NEXT TIME???
I HATE F-ROD SO MUCH AND I WOULD NEVER WANT TO SEE HIS UGLY FACE OR INJURY-WAITING-TO-HAPPEN DELIVERY IN PINSTRIPES.

This game is over.

His name is F-Rod! there is NO K in francisco. And I am not buying this "K" for strike out thing cus thats stupid.

this is going to suck.

napoli looks like he doesn't bathe....and he didn't SWING at that? you think the umps want the angels to win? this is bad. REALLY bad.

whelp, it was nice typing to you all.. the game will be over shortly

This is really starting to suck.

Mo is coming in-at least he has some pressure on him...two men on and chonie-boy is at bat. Yet another AL player I can't stand.

You know, I have come to the conclusion that I hate everything and everything either suck or is dumb.

This sucks, and is dumb.

I hope this works.

Yeah, Mo usualy doesn't do well in non save appearances!
Still the right move!

one
*******
pitch?

I didn't it would work out. Mo in a non save situation again.

Micahel you were right this sucks!!!
Enjoyed typing with other Yankee fans!

Obviously not the right decision. If these guy delivered with RISP, Mo would have started the inning looking for a save. These hitters suck.

I think that is officially the end of the Yankee season. As much as it hurts to admit it I do not see them turning it around. They had a runner on second with one out in the 7th and 8th inning could not do anything. I will continue to watch the remainder of the season but with little interest on the postseason.

um, thats it. Robinson Cano is one of the worst fielders in history. What was his problem on that play? Was he doing his nails like a rich long island north shore tramp? was he waving at the stands like Cabrera?

This is a disaster of epic proportions and I am so sick of watching this crap.

Robinson Cano made one of the alltime worst blunders. he stood there and WATCHED!! He watched like he though betemit was going to get it. What? This kid plays whenever the hell he feels like it and cabrera is the same way. this team is a bunch of losers and now we are going to hear it from all the ******'bag trolls who just ahve nothing better to do then manually masterbate farm animals for artificial insemination.

"last season" well, thanks for trying fella's. Thanks for giving the fans a BIG F-YOU and not even trying this weekend. Cano just WATCHED it. My grandmother could have fielded that ball.

I am sick of this. i am so going to have a fit right now from this. Where is my barf bag? when is football season starting? Why the hell is Kennedy still on this team?

THATS IT!!! its not "early" anymore. we got hosed on every call AND have guys on this team that quit or just don't try.

this team has NO BALLS. and its OBVIOUS that my "ex" favorite player who decides to show up to the ball park whenever he feels like it is missing is little hand-holding daddy Joe Torre. Jeter looks lost and lethargic, Giambi can't hit anything unless he loads up and swings from his heels and if he gets lucky enough he makes contact. Betemit doesn't know how to play baseball. Damon can't throw out a pile of trash if he tried. Justin Christian-Who? A-Rod forgets how to hit baseballs when there are runners on and we have a bullpen that can't pitch its way out of a sandwhich bag. Oh, here ya go Kennedy-here's a baggie. Can you pitch your way out of that?

and MO? MO!!!!! He throws ONE effen pitch and we lose the game??? Is that some sort of record, held by many people who SUCK??? I can't deal. Everything that every stupid-a*s Troll says is absolutely right. No need to remind us, you retards! we already know our team sucks and is cheating us real bad.

and if they re-sign Giambi I am going to become a fan of a crappy team with no payroll-like the marlins or something. They are outof the Stadium, George is on his last years, and all of my favorite players go onto the field to crap their pants.

To hell with them. Watch for the sweep in Minnersoter and minnimouse's posts about how much we suck.

I hate this team. they suck.

I am not sure what the right move is but will Girardi manage the yankees next year.

I would love to see fans protest by not showing up to the ball park in sept. THAT would send this message:

We want CC
WE WANT TEX
WE WANT SHEETS
hell, buy every single player you can find!!!! I don't care anymore. I'd rather get crap from people about "$200mm" payroll then have to deal with a bunch of scrubs and no-bodies who can't or don't want to play baseball.

Betemit???Sexon?Justin 'falls on his a*s on the basepaths' Christian? rasner/geise/ponson/kennedy rotation? THIS is the team you field?

and everytime I post on this blog i am helping this team make money.

they no NOTHING about baseball. Stick traded Roberto Kelley for O'Neil. Um, wow. Genius move? Firing Bob Watson was the dumbest thing this org could have ever done...

You guys are right-FIRE CASHMAN and GIRARDI! and start selling off players (oh, wait-can't do that-they are all free agents, so we don't get squat but more draft choices to get overhyped and injured pitchers!)

Yankees Suck, They only KNOW HOW TO DISAPOINT THEIR FANS... HA HA Girardi should be FIRED!!! He does not know how to manage this team. I have NEVER SEEN A TEAM SO FLAT!!! Maybe it is the I don't give a crap attitudes of the players but still a manager has to be held responsible!!!! HEY the METS tried it and it seems to have worked... I will not waste any more money on this team this year, NO MORE STADIUM trips for me... I guess I will save TONS of money the rest of the season... I know I will purchase tickets to go see TAMPA RAYS in the WORLD SERIES... With airfare, tickets, car rental it still won't cost me as much as ONE YANKEE GAME!!! FIRE GIRARDI-FIRE CASHMAN!!!!

In my opinion, he can go right now. And, he can take the hitting coach with him. The pitching coach I'm not sure of, but to be safe we probably should bag him to.
Whatever these guys know, they simply cannot convey it to players. Or, maybe the players just aren't listening.
Either way, the coaches have failed to get the effort and the results necessary.
Let's go the old George way, fire them. Let the players know that this crap is not going to be tolerated.

Micheal, what you just saw on TV was an example of how this team is not going to make it to the playoffs. There's still six weeks of baseball left and I'm sticking by my analysis ( I plan on studying Sports Management ) so who knows, Bronxkidd for next Yankee GM!? Anyway, if you guys think the bullpen lost this game yu're wrong. The offense lost this game. Eve if that run didn't score, this game would stil be TIED. We cannot win without a lead. I'm actually not as irked about this loss. I would rather lose close games than blow outs. When you get blown out, it's definitely because your team played horribly that day.

I guess this is going to be one boring October. It will be so weird not seeing the Yankees on the playoff brackets.

GET RID OF CANO ALREADY!!!! LAZY FIELDER, LAZY HITTER, IDIOT !!!!!

I agree this team has pitching problems but the more serious problem is the lack of offense. The lack of simple baseball skills is what really hurts this team. If they could drive in a run with a runner in scoring position would be nice. Their is no team I hate more than the Twins but they are hitting over .300 with RISP.

"Halos finish Sweep of Yanks" is the headline. It's almost as if we were destined to get swept. That's what the headline makes it sound like.

I didn't see the game, I'm no rocket scientist, and I still knew the Yankees would get beaten. Even if we had taken one of three-- meaningless. Tommorow we go into the Twinkies' house ( another of Ponson's former orgnizations ) and maybe we'll take two out of three. It's Perkins, Slowey and then Liriano. I'm being positive - minded about this, maybe we get swept. We've had struggles scoring runs against pitchers with 7 and 10 ERAs. Perkins and Slowey are aces if that's the case.

I'm, scratch Liriano for Nick Blackburn. Attaboy, maybe now are chances widen!

As a life long yankee fan I am ready to blow up. I want to keep believing this team will find a way to the post season but today made me feel like that might not happen. I do not see any fight in this team. As somebody mentioned yesterday where is paul to throw a water cooler after a loss.

200 Million dollars:

Mussina
Pettitte
Ponson
Geise
Razzkatrazz( Kennedy is gone )

Damon
Jeter ( Captain who is losing his captainesque ways )
Abreu ( hot hitter )
A-Rod ( go ahead... take third base while I say a few words to Jeter )
Giambi ( I'll alternate between clean shaves and mustaches for a couple of RBIs )
Ivan Rodriguez ( My knee hurts )
Robinson Cano ( Hot hitter, no complaints here. )
Melky " Mendoza line " Cabrera
Sexson ( Big sexy no more )

bench

Betemit ( so much potential, so little playing time )
Justin Christian ( there's a little rhyme there )

DL

... All of the starters.

PLayoffs baby.

Well after that bottom of the 9th look at a slow ground ball go past cano and betapuke"A cashman trade" this team does not care anymore about playing the game to win!!! A rod plays for him self jeter is too in to his fake crap ford tv adds cano is a lazy well you fill in the blank damon has a limp arm melky is nothing more then a 2 year old flash in the pan aberu does try hard at times x-man is ok i do like him jason is a used up jucie bag!!! Tha pitching need i say anymore we all know about and cashman no lets keep the farm we have great players in the farm please cashman don't lie to your self and tell us fans that it is true we have S**t in the farm!!!! well yes there is a very small hope that the yanks can still make the playoff's as of today it looks like a big fat NO!!!!!Until then i am a fan of the good old U.S.A i am very happy sitting in front of my 42inc hd lg t.v.looking at some great kids who care and try hard and give it there all in the 2008 Olympics un like this yankees team!!!!!

WOWOWOWOWOWOW... YET ANOTHER TIE GAME LOST BY RIVERA IN THE 9TH... JOE, HOW MANY EFFING TIMES ARE YOU GOING TO SEND MO OUT THERE THIS SEASON IN A TIE GAME, ONLY TO WATCH HIM BLOW IT?!???!?!!?! Here's my take on it... FAR TOO MANY ALREADY. Save situations? NO DOUBT, PUT MO'S *** IN THERE, HE'S UNSTOPPABLE. Non-save situations? KEEP MO'S *** IN THE BULLPEN.

This is what I think right now. Obviously if the Yankees weren't decimated by the major injuries to their bigger stars, things would be different. However, unlike the other teams in the MLB, these Yankees haven't figured out a way to pick each other up and win games with people like Matsui, Posada and Wang on the DL for a long, long time. How the F does this team come out and win 8 straight out of the gates from the All-Star break, then go and lose 5 of 6? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Are they the Kansas City Royals all of a sudden? When this team gets a solid performance from their starting pitcher, the bullpen sucks. When the starting pitcher sucks, the bullpen is great. The offense is FAR TOO inconsistent. Giambi needs to periodically grown and shave his mustache to get hits... really? Jeter hasn't looked like Jeter all year, A-rod looks retarded in the clutch, Cano has too much talent/potential to look lazy out there. Let me keep going. Melky obviously forgot that on offense, the goal is to make contact with the ball, using your wooden bat. If he would continue to make solid contact, hits will come. Damon busts his *** out there ALL OF THE TIME, even if he has a noodle arm. Sometimes Abreu looks lost to me, but he's the most consistent person on this team offensively, and he's shown that not only throughout his whole career, but since he's joined the Yankees as well. Nady is good, and I hope the Yankees keep him for a while.
As for pitchers, Kennedy is a head case, plain and simple. There's NO explanation for him, a pitcher that basically DOMINATES AAA, but absolute blows goat nuts in the majors. Ever since Hughes tweaked his hamstring during that no-hitter in Texas last season, he's been a walking injury. Joba was dominating everyone he saw this season, and I think that trend will continue after he comes off the DL. Someone needs to be held accountable for these injuries, I don't want to hear this bs about how all these injuries are "freak incidents". This team was working their ***** off during spring training, maybe they got babied once the games starter or something? The conditioning staff or strength training staff should be fired, all of them. Our bullpen, which had been so amazing the past 2ish months, has sucked *** the past week or so.
This team needs consistency, and there's absolutely none of it in the Bronx. Everyone wanted this grand send off for "The Cathedral", well I don't think finishing 3rd in your division and not making the playoffs for the first time in 13 years as qualifying as a grand send off. I mean call me crazy, but that doesn't fit the bill if you ask me. Get your crap together boys, or it's going to be a LONG off-season.

Stick a fork in us. We're done.
