Yankees not interested in Sabathia

Sabathia could break down soon due to weight concerns and if they wait it out until after the season it will cost less as he is a free agent.
Having a good pitching coach to get the most out of what they have is more important. Leo Mazzone is available and he is the one that had all those Cy Young winners in Atlanta.
Job of a manager coach is to motivate and place people in position to actually win a game. One does not worry about someone's EGO when it effects the team's ability to win. With a different set of coaches perhaps this team could accomplish more then just show up. Only pitcher to improve this year is Moose. Many hitters have gotten worse from last years stats. The difference is the coaches/manager not the players.

We have to be very careful otherwise we will be making Tony Wolmack, Kenny Lofton deals, giving Kennadia and Abreu away. If we acquire another outfielder first, that is the way to trade Abreu.

Abreu and Kennadia don't have to go in the same deal. One could go in a package for Fuentes.
Did Cleveland release their closer or is going to the minors? Option?

I thought we cut Ortiz's homie, Hawkins? He's still listed on our roster.

Also is Moehler staying on the roster and is Posada moving to DH/1B?

An absolutely dumb move on the part of the Yankees to put an inexperienced rookie at the top of the lineup with Damon out. Gardner has shown nothing except he is nowhere near ready to play in the majors. He has 2 SB and 3 R's, but big deal! Only one hit. Those stats don't mean a whole lot when he can't get on base. Just glad this team didn't panic earlier in the season when this team was really struggling and call him up. Put him in the 8 or 9 spots, idiots!!!

Gardener is way more ready than Melky and Kevin Thompson were at this point.

Have to agree with you, Gardner is nowheres close to being ready. Has yet to show he can hit major league pitching, and does strike out alot, that's why he wasn't used much as a leadoff hitter in the minors. Melky has shown that he can hit a little from the leadoff spot in the past, at least a lot better than Gardner. "F" Thompson he wasn't even a true leadoff hitter.

Unfortunatley this group of Yankees just is not going to get it done. Yanks should either try to improve the team for next year or make a trade with some big name players to shake things up. They may want to change some of the coaches, especially the batting coach whom has not gotten the response from the players.

This Star Ledger report indicates to me that management has accepted that this year the Yankees are not playing to make the playoffs. There may not be a roster flushing at the trade deadline but if management thinks it will win with this roster next year than they are on LSD. There are way too many holes on this roster to be a contender. Not only are the Sox and Rays better than the Yankees in this division but the O's are not far behind. From the age of this roster to the inadequate bench to the unprepared minor leaguers this roster needs some changes.

dang, you folks are so gloomy.. remember the 14.5 game deficit last year? and the Yankees STILL made the playoffs? right now the deficit is only 6 games for the Wild Card.. it's still VERY possible the season could turn around - three months of baseball to go

if the kids (Robbie and Melky) can start hitting like they've done in the past and when Matsui comes back, the Yankees can still get it done

This group of Yankees has tons of talent. The lineup has great hitters 1-8, and whoever they plug into the 9-hole isn't the worst hitter in the world. I just think it's awfully retarted that people think the Yankees are awful when they lose two in a row after scoring 18 runs in a game. Not only that, but they lost two in a row to the defending World Series champion Red Sox.
And the coaching is good for the most part. Dave Eiland seems to be decent, Joe Girardi is a very good manager, and Kevin Long is a good hitting coach. If the Yankees don't talk to the media about Long everyday and say, "OH WHAT A GREAT HITTING COACH!" it doesn't make him a bad hitting coach.

This team isn't the same as last season's team. Only in personnel only for the most part. It has shown no life whatsoever this season, Id oubt it will show much life if it can't get up for a big series against the Suks at home, heck they sucked against the Rangers. Lets face facts this isn't close to the same team as last season's with a lot of players showing their ages already. To resort to so many "ifs" for the remainder of this season really says a lot about this team, and how desperate their situation is. "Ifs" won't get this offense to perform at a high level it will need to in order to catch the Rays, and Suks."Ifs" won't guarantee the Suks or the Rays go into serious losing streak in order for the Yanks to catch up to them. "Ifs" won't guarantee this pitaching staffs get healthy or perform at a high level. This team can't come back against teams when they trail late in games, what makes anyone thinnk this team can catch up to either the Rays or the Suks. I'm not saying to give up on this team yet, I haven't, but I am also facing reality, which is this team is a hollow shell of last year's team, and it won't make the postseason without making some serious changes. In short, this team hasn't given anyone reason to show faith or confidence in it. It would be a pipe dream if this team ended the month in a double-digit deficit to the Rays, and Suks.

Matt what I like about your posts is you tell it like it is and that is NOT sarcasm as one of this post would say. The reality of this season is this team HAS NOT given its fans any reason to believe that it will come back and get into this race. When IFS become wins with this team maybe most of them will earn their money. Anyone with baseball knowledge knows that this team is not in good shape and changes if not major changes need to be made.

Let the pitcher hit and use the DH rule for Gardner.

7 of those LOB's are Betemit and Giambi today. I'm not picking on them it seems to be a disease that this squad has; the inability to drive in runs with the bases loaded and less than two outs. It has been a disease that has hit this team for at least five years.

Yes cstalhoo but you are talking about guys that wanted to win as a team, not individuals who cared about their stats more than winning as a team. That to me is the biggest difference in the 1996-2000 Yankees and today's team. Those three wanted to win and if it meant a sacrifice fly or moving a runner over, or delivering in the clutch those three would do it.

And God forbid O'Neill did not deliver in the clutch, watch out water coolers. Loved that guy!

This entire team is BAD for clutch hitting, even Jeter is having a bad year in that area.

Gardner has had I believe 16 at bats with only one hit but 2 RBIs and he has not been the strike out bunny that everone believes he is. He has worked the count full on 7 occasions and hit the ball hard for a lot of outs and been unlucky. I think he has promise. Add to that his undoubted speed on base and good defensive skills at R/F. Has anyone an opinion of the above. From where I sit albeit a long way away. The pieces are being put together perhaps not for this year. All that and we are 2-0 up not quite enough but still a lead. Can they hang on with Veras up.

You're right how the Moose handled Ramirez, just hit him, but the first one hit the back pant pocket. Gardner needs to start hitting, he only has one hit, they need him on base he steal very easily, like Ellsbury or Reyes. It sort of is a good idea for him to lead off because, let's say that he does get on, Gardner's basically on second on the next pitch. They don't need Sabathia. The Yankees need Brewers prospect LaPorta if they can get him. Plus, they need to capitalize with the bases loaded, they had two chances to score more.

I think Gardner should be put in the 8 or 9 hole until he does start hitting, when he does then put him in the top of the order, but until then this team needs someone who has a track record as a lead off hitter, maybe Cabrera to help a struggling offense get going.

brucebowler, i agree with you in getting holliday and peavy. But, what are the chances that they do get them, right now what they need the is offense and pitching, Plus scouts so the Yankees can get so really good prospects in the organization like LaPorta, Longoria, Buchholz, Bruce, Maybin, and Kershaw. The Yankees have a few great prospects in JOba, Hughes, and Kennedy. They need to trade this year no matter they cannot go into August without a trade made on the Trade Deadline. It doesn't matter if they don't take Sabathia but at least get someone that will help your offense or pitching.

It blows me away how little so many of you know about baseball. Have you ever played at a high level (not high school)? Gardner is a pitchers nightmare....NOT because he hits bombs into the bleachers, but because he puts pressure on the pitcher. Yes he only has 3 hits in 22 at bats, BUT the fact that he makes pitchers throw 7-9 pitches per at bat is huge!!!! Wade Boggs was a perfect example of this. Players like this get under pitchers skin because they are tuff outs. It also allows the hitters behind him to see what the pitcher is throwing. AND you don't want to walk him because you know he'll steal on you (3 sb's so far in 4 games). Every walk or single is almost a double. He doesn't strike out a lot by the way...he's been walked 60 times in the minors just this year...60!!! We need his life and energy at the top, plus his speed. Just have some patience...4 games in and he beat the second tuffest closer in the game.
