Under the lights in the Bronx
You know, for all this talk about the unbalanced schedule, it sure does feel like a long time since the Yankees and Red Sox met. A lot has happened since April 17. Think they'll remember how to play a lengthy game?
Here's the quick hits pre-game that you need to know about ... Melky Cabrera is back in the lineup and they hope the day off cleared his head. This 0-for-19 slump might have been wearing on him quite a bit, but you'd never be able to tell by his demeanor. I crossed paths with Melky in the clubhouse and he was upbeat, saying the day off was good for him and Joe Girardi told him it'd just be for one night.
It also seems that Hideki Matsui won't be able to pick up a bat this weekend, as the Yankees originally thought he would. Surgery still is being viewed as a last resort, but it's clear that something continues to not be going well in that left knee of his. If Matsui has surgery, he said his '08 season will be over, so they'll do everything possible to avoid going under the knife. If that means Matsui has to sit out until after the All-Star Break, so be it.
Fun fact: The last time the Yankees and Red Sox met this late in the season with neither team occupying first place in the AL East was Sept. 15, 1997, when the Orioles paced the division.

I hate being right sometimes.
Not a good sign, you have 1st and 2nd no out, 1st and 3rd with 1 out, and you fail to score 1 at least. That my fellow bloggers is the sum of this season; hitting with risp.

and why the hell the yanks are so high on wilson betemit. This guy has the no baseball instincts, and swings at anything close to the plate. Sometimes he doesn't look like he knows what he's doing.
I can't stand this guy. I don't care how much "pop" he has in his bat. You have to make contact first!
Ok, Thats my anti-betemit rant for the day. Next time he strikes out, I'll probably rip into his .240 battin' *** again.

That's coming from someone who screamed for Girardi's firing earlier in the season, and who wanted that childmolesting roidhead Clemens, and that drunk Wells back in the rotation!!!
Report any abuse or spam
I never wanted Wells, I was taking the perspective of the Yankees org. I did want Clemens, now is pointless. I never wanted Girardi hired. Matt says Duncan is hitting at 160 average.

I don't share everyone's feelings on Abreu, we don't need him as much as we need pitching but with Sui's injury, we would need an outfielder if we dealt him to Cleveland.
Report any abuse or spam
This is why we should have sent Sui to SF, LA or the Mets, his knees are shot.
Report any abuse or spam
talk about someone who swings at everything-Shelley Duncan was on this team WAY too long this season. He's not that good.
This organization is obsessed with ballplayers with "pop". Yeah, hit a hair over .200, but if you hit a Homer every now and then, yer on the ML roster!
Well, in that case, why don't they go ahead and talk Rob Deer out of retirement!!
And did you hear about what Manny did to that 60 yr old guy that works for the Astros? He picked the guy up and tossed him on the ground when he wouldn't give Manny 16 free tickets to a game in houston.
I guess the Deadsox have a habit of throwing 60+ yr olds to the ground. This team has no class. The red sox aren't even diciplining him. Stuff like that is why i hate them.

Couldn't agree with you more Micahel, I feel the same way you do about players like Betapuke. Everyone focuses on the fact that he has a little pop in his bat, but it doesn't matter since he's only a benchplayer where his ABs are infrequent, and limited. Watch his BA drop back around .200 or less soon. There are better benchplayers than him around the league, he adds nothing to what has been an anemic bench and a struggling offense.
Report any abuse or spam
and since when did JD Drew become a ballplayer?
this is annoying. can we borrow some runs from last night??
Report any abuse or spam
Don't forget about LaTroy Hawkins! He still has nightmares about Glenn Allen Hill hit that grand slam a few years back. yeah, so he has been the league punching bag throwing fast balls that look like beach balls to batters and cashman signs him.
WHY???
Report any abuse or spam
Benchplayers aren't what this team needs to be worrying about right now anyway, it needs pitching dump guys like Ponson, and trade for someone like a Bedard who can actually pitch!!

Hawkins is just one of many relief pitchers in the pen who have posted bloated numbers, the pen has become a disgrace to this team.

Look Matt, Don't get me wrong-I love this team...the stripes, the tradition, the stadium (RIP 2008)....But I get so mad when there are guys here that really have no business on this roster.
These guys immediately come to mind:
Hawkins
Betemit
Ponson
Professor Hubert J Farnsworth AKA "Kyle"
and don't get me started on pavano (his name doesn't deserve a capital "P").
Just don't ruin my summer completely by signing Chacon or godforbid BONDS.
If that happens, I'm jumping off the 59th st bridge. Talk about humiliating...

I was afraid of this. The Yankees blew their wad last night. I still see that we are talking about needing pitching in the above posts. I'm sure having CC Sabathia would've helped today. That way we would only be using 3-0. There is no need to even discuss getting pitching until we start hitting. Why waste our time talking about crap like getting Sabathia or Bedard, or whining about Laturd Hawkins when we can't even score? When is enough going to be enough for these guys? When does the pride kick in? They should be ashamed of themselves. I hope the fans at the Stadium boo them off the field. I'm DISGUSTED by these losers.

You know chaz, in the late 90's when this type of slump would happen, the team would all start TAKING ptches and make the opposing pitcher work...pass the baton to the next guy. But with the signing of Jason "Idon'tneednostinkingoppositefieldhits" Giambi, the team became more and more home run conscious, even though Giambi takes alot of pitches...players like him who don't shorten up their swing in clutch situations (Arod) changed the patient, methodical approach of the championship teams from the '90's...I though Abreu would help change that...
Yeah, look at this-just as I'm typing it, Arod Swings at the first pitch and ends the game....

Well another great offensive show by this El Stinko team. Many on this blog keep naming players who don't deserve to be wearing pinstripes. Although I totally agree with those named the bigger question is who brought together this bunch? Answer = Crashman. This guy ought be the first one FIRED. I have said this many times if you are looking for the responsible ones then start with this incompetent GM. Is anyone surprised at Andy's performance tonight, being called to testify in Clemens' trial and all. And A-Rod is it any wonder his problems? It starts with getting lost in Madonna's Golden Triangle. Oh yeah we are just friends. The guy is a soap opera and so is his team.

Because these jerks stink and the fact that people, including me this year, have paid up to $300.00 per seat. Did you all know that the same seats I have sat in for years went from $125.00 per seat this year to $250.00. Next year they are saying they will go to $700.00 per seat down there. For that money they better let me sing the anthem and throw out the first pitch. Actually they shoud let me pitch, because Ia know I am better then Hawkins and Farnsworthless. lol

Heck I'll take Charlie Brown over those guys. He may get undressed by linedrives but at least he can keep the ball in the park!!

No Doubt Giambi is one of our better hitters right now...what I was saying is I think he is in large part responsible for the change in the philosophy in the teams overall approach at the plate. That big contract plus falling in love w/ the short porch in right had way too much influence on Giambi...and other players followed suit...
we have all been complaining about the same things since 2002-when the Front office got all freaked out by the lack of production against the Diamondbacks in the 2001 WS...the decsions from back then are the biggest reason why we are all having a fit right now.
I think Giambi is an alright sort of guy. Will he ever help this team win a Championship? I think if it was going to happen, it would have happened already. That ship sailed years ago...If a few times a series he would just tap one to the vacated third base hole, with no one on, other teams would shift on him less. This idea that he'd "hit over the shift" hasn't quite worked, has it? Giambi is NOT Ted Williams...and Ted was one of the only guys in history who could pull balls through and over the shift consistently...

I'm Not surprised Godzilla didn't respond to therapy. I had a conversation w/ a friend of mine last year that the yanks should have looked to trade him to a West Coast team and sign a RT handed hitting out fielder ( The current alignment was an alternative we talked about too). Matsui is not going to be back anytime soon, and now he is as damaged goods as an Alou or someone.

I didn't think it could get worse then Professor Farnsworth....then they sign Latoya, and it DOES get worse...much much worse....Worse signing of the decade. worse then Pavano-he at least came off an 18 win season and had won a WS. Hawkins? He never did ANYTHING to warrent a contract, let alone Paul O'Neil's Number. I know he was "honoring" Clemente, but he showed an obvious ignorance of recent Yankee History, and really did offend the fans, and I think he got to a few of O'Neil's old buddies too.
AND-no one would have cared if he was pitching lights out to a 2.50 ERA...
He doesn't deserve to be in the Majors, let alone on a team contending-THIS TEAM, THIS STADIUM, THIS TRADITION-for a championship.
This is the last year of the most heralded sports arena since the Roman Colloseum, and THATS your "big free agent" signing? LaToya Hawkins? Are you f-ing kidding me?? A guy who has one of the worst ERAs in the HISTORY of yankee stadium??? How do you NOT take stats like that Into consideration before signing someone???
So, Coach, this is how the Yanks justify those $7 hot dogs-Latoya Hawkins. He looks more like a Deer-In-Headlights the a ML Ball player. Pathetic.

michael,
Unfortunately, this is where you and I disagree, I don't think Hawkins is the worst acquisition the Yanks have made, there have been too many to say that about him (.e. Pavano, Jaret Wright, Betemit, Farnsworth, Johnson etc.). I hated this acquisition myself, because he is an average pitcher who has become very hittable. I stated at the begining of the season this guy scared me, and now everyone sees why. This guy should have been cut long ago, but like Betapuke this team has developed a mysterious hard on for this guy.

Matt, I don't disagree with you one bit. But what I am saying is that all of the guys you named (exception betemit) at least had a track record of doing something significant as a major leaguer-Pavano won a WS, Wright shut down the yanks in 2007 playoffs, Johnson is a Hall of Famer, and Farnsworth at least at some point in his career threw 100 mph.
But for this year, the last year of the stadium and with a new manager, you sign the guy with the worst ERA in yankee stadium history? I don't think any of the other signings can boast a dubious stat like that. In fact, you cna make at least some far fetched arguement to justify the signings of Pavano, Wright, Giambi or the trades for Johnson, Mondesi, and Knoblach.
But this one has to take the cake, at least for me, because I felt the same way about Latoya as I did about Arthur Rhodes: "why is this guy even wearing a uniform?"
Bottom line, its a tie beetween miss Latoya Hawkins and Gei Igawaful as the worst free agent signings in the Crash-and-burn-man era. In Igawa's case, at least he got a few batters out. Hawkins is ALWAYS behind hitters and always allowing Inherited Runners to score.
My problem with the signing is "This is the bigtime free agent bullpen signing thats going to take this team over the top?". If there was any year they should have made a splash, at least it should have been this year.

Raise your hand if you are so disappointed with this season of mediocrity that you don't feel like even watching anymore games.
I sorta feel that if I continue to watch games and spend money (no matter how minute an amount) I am supporting the way they are running the team. Maybe I'll just turn off the screen when Hawkins, betemit, ponson, igawa, etc are in the game.
I am, of course, still going to watch games and listen to games...its just that I really expected that this team was going to really bust it this year, considering that the stadium is closing.
I don't know...maybe I wouldn't be so bent out of shape if it wasn't for the Rays. If they were still at the bottom the division, maybe the Yanks would only be 2-3 games back or even in first place.
I'm depressed.

Its time to dump Joe and hire Willie as manager. Joe is too connected to these players as a friend and needs time as a base coach before taking over a team again. Hank needs to prove he is the son of George and pull the trigger now before the season is lost.

Randolph would suck as manager of this team. He couldn't do anything with the Mets while he was there, and was pathetic this season, especially after this team wasted all of their high quality minor league talent to get Santana who has done nothing to help the Mets, what a waste!!! He's no difference maker!! Keep that loser Randolph from this team!!
Report any abuse or spam
micahel,
I hear what you are saying, and feel the same way you do right now about this team. I do have to disagree with you slightly about what you said about players like Pavano, and Wright. The Yanks signed those guys to big contracts based on what they did the previous season alone. That's a mistake, and very short sighted. IF you look at Pavano's career stats before his 18-win season he did absolutely nothing. You can basically say the same about Wright albeit he did have a little more success than Pavano, but just a little. He too had the best season of his career, just like Wright, and that's why the Yanks signed him. Pavano turned out to be an injury prone pitcher as we all know, even when he was healthy he was very mediocre. Wright turned out to be nothing more than an unreliable 5-inning pitcher. Heck, this team continued this trend by signing Ponson because he was having a good season, and saw him as an option to fill a hole despite the fact he is a 100-game loser and has horrible career stats. All of these guys had very short, minor histories of success, not enough to justify big contracts.
As for Farnsworth, he is nothing more than another Crashman mistake. Even before the Yanks signed him he had a rep of not being able to handle high pressure situations. Just ask any Cubs fan. He was another pitcher who was signed because he had a career year, again he was a mistake. A reliever who has a 100 mph fastball, but can't handle high pressure situations, and has been inconsistent, is pretty much worthless as a reliever. Just look at the results since he joined the Yanks. He is barely a decent middle reliever. All of these guys were mistakes!!
