The Yankees are hot, hot, hot

Eight is great for the Yankees, who must have had one heck of an All-Star Break considering how they're playing right now. This is the Yankees' longest winning streak immediately following the break since 1947, when they won 11 in a row.

The way things are going, who's to say they can't equal that? Pitching, hitting and defense. It's not as easy as the Yankees are making it look, I assure you, but suddenly all of their problems don't seem quite so huge. The Bombers' hurlers have an AL-best 1.56 ERA (13 ER/75.0 IP) since the All-Star Break and have outscored opponents 49-15 during that stretch.

Don't look now, but the Yankees are even up with the BoSox in the loss column. Who would have predicted this? Maybe Joe Girardi, but this run is coming up on some of us by surprise.

"I love the way we're playing," the skipper was saying in the loud, dirty dungeon outside the road clubhouse here at Fenway. "We know that we're chasing teams and we have a lot of road games and we're going to have to win on the road. We're going to have to take care of our own field, too. Win series and things should work out."

Whats the latest on CJ Henry?

Is he back at SS?

If we moved Melky, who would play center? Damon is not an option? Randy Winn? Makes no sense.

I'm sorry, but Washburn is not the type of pitcher we should deal Melky for. If we didn't deal Melky for Santana, why the HELL would we move him for Washburn?

I have to say that I'm a little surprised by this current Yankee run but some of it has to to with the bull pen and Joba. You know, I could say something funny and say, the reason why the Yankees are winning is because they are pitching well and hitting well.

I thought you might like this article from todays:
Charlotte Observer July 27 2008
Pitch counts? Terrific.... How about win. counts?
****** IN MY OPINION ... by Stan Olsen *********

On July 4, the New York Mets removed starting pitcher Johan Santana, their theoretical ace; in fact, baseball's theoretical ace; after 95 pitches and eight innings. The Mets were tied at 2 with rival Philadelphia at the time. New York's reliever promptly blew the game in the ninth.
I t gets worse. Tuesday,on a night when closer Billy Wagner was unavailable, Santana had thrown 105 pitches against the Phillies after eight innings, and the Mets held a 6-2 lead again Santana, who was signed to a ******** six-year, $l37.5 million contract to win big games, was removed.
With no Wagner to finish it, three New York relievers quickly turned that lead into an 8-6 loss in the ninth.
This is getting ridiculous.
I understand that managers want young pitchers, guys who are 21 or 22 and haven't thrown many innings, on a pitch count of about 100. But Santana? The 'guy is 29,his and and body mature and accustomed to pitching.
This pitch count thing is getting totally out of hand.
First, in a gradual shift from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s four-man starting rotations; which had worked just fine for decades; were replaced by five-man rotations. Then pitch counts came into vogue, with the stated purpose of not overusing young arms unused to so much extra stress. .
I can buy that. And for years, it worked that way. After a few seasons in the majors and hundreds of innings, veteran starters were allowed to throw 120,130,even 140 pitches. Whether they left a game was based their effectiveness, not on an assigned number.
Just as it had been for more than a century.!.
In recent seasons, though, there has been a subtle change. Now 100 pitches seems on its way to becoming the get-em-out:of-there limit for everybody, with Santana the perfect example.
And it's absurd. Don't tell me Santana, who was cruising in both games, couldn't have worked another inning or even two innings in both losses. The Mets likely would have won at least one of those if not both - games that might end up deciding the NL East championship.
Isn't winning big games what the Mets are paying him for?
Let me make two points to prove one. In:1974, California's
Nolan Ryan threw 259 pitches in a 12-inning complete- game victory.
He was 27 at the time, and a young veteran, and would pitch almost two decades more. And in 1962, San Francisco's Juan Marichal beat Milwaukee's Warren Spahn 1-0;,. in 16 innings. No pitch counts were kept at the time, but both pitchers had to have approached or passed 200. Spahn went on to finish 23-7 that year. He was 42 years old at the time.
The point is that as arms strengthen, they can do more. The 100-pitch limit is fine for youngsters, but not for a guy like Santana. Once a pitcher has proven that he's healthy and durable, the limit should be a combination of how he feels and how effective he is.
That said, 120 pitches should be normal for strong veterans like Santana or C.C.Sabathia or Andy Pettitte. And, if they're comfortable and rolling,130,140 or even 150shouldn't necessarily be out of the question.
They are pitchers. Let them pitch.'Or pretty soon, we'll see a six-inning limit for starters. And a lot of fingers crossed for the bullpen.
"GO YANKEES!"

BP,
Henry has been playing the outfield or DHing for the Tampa Yankees (Single A Advanced) and I believe is hitting .220-.240.

Thanks I thought he was in Trenton, didn't know if they moved him back to SS.

I would not trade Cabrera for Washburn either, but, how much longer can we survive with Ponson and Rasner in our rotation? We all seem to believe one or both of them will get shelled soon. It's not a question of if but when?

For those of us upset about losing Dan McCutchen in place of Phil Coke, as I initially was, here is a last ten game comparison:

Player - ERA - IP - Hits - ER - BB - SO
Coke - 1.73 - 57.1 - 40 - 11 - 18 - 63
McCutchen - 3.52 - 64.0 - 63 - 25 - 11 - 54

Keep in mind that Coke is AA and left handed while McCutchen was AAA and right handed.

Sper,
Mike Marshall [and I] agree with you. However, these days pitchers don't have the same mechanics and snap their elbows to throw curve balls and breaking balls at a much younger age. Back in the days when kids were still playing ball in the streets of Manhatten kids didn't start throwing curves till they were much older, like college age. The tendons in the arm just aren't developed yet to do that sort of motion.
NOW-kids are throwing curves in little league, putting strain on their arms at a much younger age...can you believe how many HS ballers get tommy john surgery? (can you believe how many WANT the surgery because the tendon they replace the one in the elbow with is MUCH strong and more durable??)
Nolan Ryan was able to throw that many pitches because he KNEW how to pitch and how to throw the ball correctly. His Posture was great, his delivery was 100% duplicatable, and he had great knowledge of who he was pitching against. Now, you have mediocre 3rd and 4th tier pitchers getting $10+million per year to have a .500 record and then getting an attitude when they have to show some work ethic. Its sad.
The pitch count is in place for two reasons:
1) its a result of the fact that a vast many pitchers do not know how to throw properly, and they have faulty mechanics to start with.
2) It gives the pitching coaches a legit job they can claim a salary for. Most pitching coaches don't do anything. They are usually guys who couldn't pitch professionally (Rags, Stot, and Oral are some exceptions). They have no legit education on body physiology, body mechanics, or the physics behind throwing. So to protect their jobs, the pitching count was implimented so that these bad mechanics wouldn't wear out the pitcher's arms so quickly. They are also "protecting the investment" of the ballclubs.
the pitch count is a joke. There is no reason why there should be one arbitrary #. and 100 pitches is usually the cut off because some "expert" decided that no one should throw more then 100 pitches in HS or College or Minor League ball.

You guys should look up Mike Marshall and see what he has to say about this.

just read the weather report.. rain showers currently
tonight 80% chance precipitation, heavy thunderstorms

People are Dumb.

I just read an article that the Yanks were discussing Cano and Cabrera for Teahan and Grenke from the Royals.

Um, assphinctersayswhat?? Is that not the stupitestest thing you have ever heard?

People amaze me. Is it me, or is the gene pool thinning out???

Or what about Cabrea for Bannister? Thats dumb. Lets not trade Melky for Santana, but lets trade him for a middle of the road Journeyman? Dumb-dee-dumb-dee-dumb.

So who plays center? Gardener? Christian? Winn? Pierre?

There are several CF options if we trade Cabrera. However, anyone notice that Melky's BA for the last 10 games is .317?
And i think there was a corresponding rise in his BA last year when his name was mentioned in trade rumors! Quite the motivational tool, you think?

I have no idea. Just keep melky and play the waiting game the next two days for Wash. Its not like anyone else is beating the doors down for him. If the Moroners keep playing this game where they are over-valuing washburn, then leave him and just keep playing good baseball.

Washburn could be a headache waiting to happen anyways....

Melk's biggest problem is his maturity NOT his talent. If he stays focused, you have a very solid, almost allstar quality, CF.

Mike,
I enjoyed the HGT article. Thanks. I would miss either of the "killer Cs" on our bench keeping A-Rod loose!

MJM, I wouldn't even give KC Gonzalez for those 2/// Who's kidding who.

exactly. My point. They are just printing something cus there is nothing going on in that part of the baseball world this summer.

some guy comments and says his name is "Brian Cashman" and I thought it was funny.

WOW! Gonzalez for Grienke and Teahen? In a heartbeat YES! Or even one for either one!

a report says the Yankees are only offering money and a middle-level prospect.. which is great because they're not putting Melky up there

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/07/jarrod-washburn.html#comments

If they want to talk Ichiro, we'll give them Cabrera, Abreu, and a couple of prospects.

Cabrera is mentioned in almost every deal...Gagne, Santana, Wash, etc.
Manny to the Mets.

Washburn obviously has some value, but, only those involved in last weeks Tampa meeting know all of the factors. On the positive side, I remember a very average left handed pitcher, Fritz Peterson, winning 20 game one season or how "lucky" Randy Johnson was to win 17 or 19 or whatever. At least we know that talks are continuing!

Whoa - let me nip the "Tommy John surgery can improve a healthy arm" discussion in the bud. The NYT had a good article on this last year. No orthopedic surgeon would perform such a surgery on a healthy player. The myth usually comes from comparing an injured player before surgery with a repaired player after surgery.

Unnecessary surgery is NOT the way to get ahead in the pitching game. Keeping kids on fastballs and pitch counts is.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/20/sports/baseball/20surgery.html

BP,
Were you the one touting Ichiro recently? While I would love to see him in pinstripes for at least a year or two, isn't there Japanese ownership and a large Japanese community in Seattle? And Hal's recent comments about Yankee profitability makes me think there is no way we take on that kind of salary. Even the Washburn salary for two months seems excessive.

RobtK, I too would make that KC trade..with Gonzalez, I was trying to be funny since Cabrera and Cano were mentioned were mention in the trade.. I say the same Bpk if they add Ichiro and we talk fast ............

I hope Cano is completely untouchable!!!

Japanese newspapers were saying that Seattle needs to trade Ich.

Before the season, the Dodgers wanted Matsui and Mussina. Thanks to the Mariners, they may get Abreu and Kennadia and some for Lowe and Pierre. Washburn pitched today and we sent no one to scout him but we saw Lowe, I think it was last night.

We are still talking to Colorado about Fuentes, where in our pen would he go? Ask Kyle Farnsworth. I'd still like to get Molina.

Lowe and Pierre? SHUDDER, GASP!

Wasnt Derek Lowe washed up 5 years ago?

Lowe like Clemens has a career after leaving Boston. I'd give more for Lowe over Washburn but not much.

if Manny Ramirez is not traded this week, then it looks like Boston won't pick up his option for 2009.. is there any chance that the Yankees would get Manny? for $20 mil/yr i personally don't think so; the Yankees still have Matsui and may try to keep Giambi for another year

Bobby Abreu will not be traded. He has a total no trade clause. Does anyone think he will waive that clause right now. Not very likely. I have not read or heard any baseball source say that Abreu is on the trading block. Bobby Abreu will be the Yankee right fielder until the end of the year. I'm also not sure that Cabrera and Kennedy will be traded in any package for anyone. Someone else posted earlier that the Yankees would not trade that pair for Santana, I would hope they would not trade that pair for anyone less than the caliber of Santana. Everyone keeps talking about starting pitchers. Ponson has been okay. Rasner has been okay. At the beginning of the year no one believed that Mussina would still be in the rotation at this point of the season. My point is that no one knows what Ponson or Rasner are going to do. Why pick up another contract when Hughes and Kennedy are close to coming back in the event that either Ponson or Rasner blow up. Unless something really good like Nady and Marte surface in the next few days, the Yankees need to stand pat with what the have and hope for the best from here out.

I've not seen Abreu named anywhere but here and I check fifteen sites each day. Some here think his ultra conservative play in right field is lazy. It was the same in Philadelphia.

I am a subscriber to the notion that the Ponson/Rasner "bubble will burst" eventually. We all hope we're wrong.but, it makes sense to constantly be aware of any and all pitching upgrades within reason.

It looks as though Ponson's bubble is bursting right now.

Its going to be a long night...and I do not want manny in pinstripes. I hate him as much as any player i hated in the past 10 years.

and is it me or is steve philips wrong about everything he says? and if he IS right, then its like "oh, tell me something I don't know captain obvious"...

isn't this the same guy who traded scott kazmir for victor zambrano???

Worst GM in history is an analyst for ESPN....what a joke....

Did Ponson just give up another run while I was posting???

Jesus! Where the hell is washburn already?!?!?!

He's done. Get him outta here!

Stick a fork in fatty, he's done. He's getting hit more than a red headed kid at a playground.

And if that ELOHSSA Hersheiser makes any more GNIKCUF EXCUSES for Manny's actions I'm going to shoot my DAMNED TV! What a stupid *** OH is. OH, Manny;s like a child, he throws his tempertantrums and then he's fine. Just let him act like a spoiled 7 year old brat and then he'll get right back to hitting again. GO TO HELL HERSHEISER! I've lost every ounce of respect I had for you.

Was it Phillips that made those comments?

We need to pull Ponson from the rotation. Fill the hole from inside, trade for a replacement, whatever. We need him gone.

Torre kidnapped the real derek jeter and replaced him with a mediocre robot. What is wrong with this guy???

He sure picked a great timke to be one of the league leaders in GIDPs....this was a killer....

Fact is, IPK is ready to try again.

That's ESPN we're talking about! Don't they always have some positive spin on anything?

WTF!!! Friggin Lester's making us look like stick ball players.....

They want a few more dominant starts from IPK.

Freakin Fat Papi is going to take Fatty-P yard here... you watch.....

huh... i was wrong.

You at one time had respect for a guy named "Oral"?

ESPN makes every excuse in the book for guys like him. They do it with certain NFL QB's who are known substance abusers and who make dumb decisions on the field and also with his "retirement"...sorry off topic....manny sucks I hate manny. If i hear the phrase "manny being manny" one more time I'm going to drink sulphuric acid. The guy should be arraigned on assault charges!!! How doies he get away with this crap??

Oh, yeah, the red socks paid someone off....thats it....
I hate FenWeigh. I Hate the Red Socks. and I HATE TIM MCCARVER!!! Oh I mean his evil twin brother Steve "Mo Vaughn is a great signing for us" Philips...

Smeone needs to shoot manny in the leg.

Better location from Ponson!

1000 monkeys 1000 typewriters, 1000 years Bob... Thats all it is.... He throws enough pitches and he's bound to make a good one now and then..... He's still getting hit like a pinata at a Mazatlan birthday party.

OH GEEZUS CHRIST! Veritek hasn't hit the freakin URINAL in WEEKS and he doubles!

hey watch your language golf.. it's just a ballgame

Well, 5 runs in 4 innings aint nothing I guess.....

Sorry man, carried away siting here with a SUCHS fan in the room. Fortunately she's asleep now.....

Alex Rodriguez did one of the coolest things I have ever seen a ball palyer do on a pop out. He caught the ball in foulground, by the stands, then he put out his glove for a kid, wearing a red sox t-shirt, to take the ball out of his glove. If i was that kid, thats a story I'd be telling forever.

Awesome job, Alex. Big time props for making a kid smile.

ANY1 on this blog doubted the need for Washburn consider this evening's performance by Ponson. This guy is NOT that good and shows the lack of major league pitching when he is still around. Make the trade Crashman!!!

i HATE it when people use Jesus' Name in vain.. i really do
i have no problem with secular expletives

Got a British friend watching this game in the early morning in London, poor guy having to watch Sidney Phoneyson.

Ok, well Lester just schooled Nady...... someone should remind him that Lester is a lefty....

I hate that wall.

the combination of a solid Lester and a not-so-solid Ponson means the Yankees' win streak might end tonight

Nady is pressing, he's a better hitter than what he is showing.

Michael I hate that wall, that stadium and anything else related to that team!!!!!!

I can tell you from personal experience, there is nothing worse than watching the Yankees get schooled by Boston from London. Damn time difference.

Sexson looked lost in that AB.

Is Washburn REALLY that much of an upgrade???? He hasn't had a winning season in 4 years. Look at their records, there's really not that much different..... Tell me who they are (aside from weight maybe??)

And if they bunt Nady, it's 5-1 with that Cano ab and another "lefty specialist" goes to school. Nice AB's Sexon...

Is Sexson pressing too?

HOW not who. Sorry.

rcngolf Washburn is an upgrade from Ponson & Rasner.

I think they are getting beaten by a great pitcher.

No Sexson just got schooled, well Bull Durham is on cable here and that's alot better to watch then this.

Even if their records are similar, the difference in run support makes up for that.

JHT,
I'm not sure of that.

Looks like Girardi might have to save his pen tonite to fight another day, but it is Fenway and strange things do happen.

jht,
aside from being a lefty, his numbers don't show it (over Ponson, no argument on Rasner).

Nah Robert Bull is much better to watch than this.

JHT,
Golf is right. Lester is great!

The guy is with a BAD team right now. I'll take him over Sidney. What are Washburn's splits in Yankee Stadium and vs. Boston, White Sox and Angels?

"Washburn is an upgrade from Ponson & Rasner"
correct.. Seattle's holding up the deal because they're haggling over a prospect

the Yankees need TWO more starters.. hopefully Kennedy and Hughes can be back soon

I'm telling you, Papi is going long here soon.

Not disputing Lester's ability especially vs. Yankees I just think that Washburn will give the Yankees a better chance as the 4th starter than either Ponson or Rasner. I for one am only counting on Wang to come back this year. Not sure the team will see Hughes and if they do not sure what they get out of him. Washburn has playoff experience and I think he is a much better option.

70 pitches and we're not even out of the 4th. Fatty-P is working hard here. And if Papi gets on, I'm done. Need to sh.......

Oh... and there it is..... 1 ab later than my prediction. Yeah, Ponson, hang your head you dope.

Melky!!!!!!!!!!! excellent concentration!

for Melky's defense and speed and arm, he should stay

I say now ponson stays in until his arm falls off. If I were Joe, I'd tell all but one of the relievers to hit the showers. Let that tell Ponson he's in it for the duration.

And THAT play right there should tell Hank that Melky STAYS in out CF....

you got that right rcngolf. Turn out the lights the party is over. Time to sent Sidney to the same place Hawkins went. I bet by trade deadline Washburn is in pinstripes.

How soon before Ponson gets waived, any bets?

rcngolf, nice prediction. I would rather you were wrong. Anyway, this one seems wrapped up because the team has given up here. Not that I blame them. We don't have Hawkins anymore, and he was the go to guy in this situation.

I can't watch this anymore. First, 2 pitches that were strikes that weren't called strikes, then a meatball that goes 400 ft.

I'm sorry, but this is aweful. This team CAN NOT hit lefties.

This is a disaster. But i called it-2/3 and they were going to lose this one big because of the pontoon. his cup of coffee is over.

Washburn is next.....

The worst part about it is ESPN-they make it so hard to enjoy a ball game....they do these interviews in the dug out, they have that stupid bar on the bottom of the screen telling me for the millionth time what manny said to ESPN deportes, and I can nit deal with the idiotic steve philips. He was a spinster as a GM and he's mr "duh" as an analyst.

I'm playing veedeo games the rest of the night. it is too pathetic to watch or even listen to....maybe I'll put on MLB game day and at least hear Sterling be silly and hear Waldman put a spin on this and make me feel better. she's good at that; BSing so it doesn't look as bad as it is.

JHT,
I'd bet with you we have another arm, but, I'd be looking for better than Washburn.

if they can just get at least 2 runs here, it'd be a long shot, but possible

Molina's been getting on base a LOT.. yesterday he got on base like 4 or 5 times

the Yankees BETTER get at least 2 here

By the trade deadline. Ponson was likely on a VERY short leash (shorter than Rasner I'm sure) and I think it's probably going to be yanked (pardon). I still wouldt be surprised to see IPK up soon, very soon.
OK boys, bases loaded and no out. Whats the pediction? Mr. GDIP? I HATE saying that! COME ON DJ!!!

Okay, time for jete to make up for earlier.

Down 7 at Fenway is not impossible.

My grandmother is an upgrade over ponsoon.

HOLY CRAP!!!

wow! a slow roller and everybody's safe!

I'm not going to watch....whenever I turn on the TV, something bad happens.

...um, what happend?

Abreu needs a double here...

That'swhat I'm talking about. Now get someone up in the pen Girardi, this MAY turn to be a game after all.

NOOOO!! I won't watch. I WON'T!!!!!!!

DJ squibbed one to third. All safe, run scored.

GIDP?????

LEster just walked in a run!

a walk! two runs in, and no outs yet.. a slam here would put the Yankees to within 1

Grounded into DP. Come on AROD, JACK ONE!!! COME ON!

I won't watch until after A-Rod's AB....

****!

S*H*I*T

Who GIDP'ed???? WHO????

Time for Nady!

Arod lined to Lowell. COME ON NADY

still loaded???

Oh... no one... Just a comment about Jeter leading some GDIP stat..... And WHY DIDNT DAMON GO!!?!?!?!?!? YOURE DOWN BY 5!

I dont care if his leg is falling off!!!! RUN!

Aw Bobby M. Damon should have been sent!

Still loaded. Cano up.

Johnny should have gone.. a simple base hit here would be two

DAMMIT!

HELL! NICE AB ROBBIE. Amazing how he can STILL so easily fall back into his old habits...... BASES FRAKIN LOADED and we manage only 2 friggin runs. 2 and one of those was on a squib hit that lowell was waiting to go foul... Real nice Yanks. Real nice situational hitting.
