Sexson in the City

Richie Sexson, all 6-foot-8 of him, is in the lineup tonight for the Yankees at first base, batting fifth. The original plan was to give Sexson tonight to get acclimated, but Joe Blanton jumped ship from the A's for Philadelphia, bumping up lefty Greg Smith for Oakland and wiping out Sexson's free day.

Sexson spoke for about 10 minutes in the clubhouse before the game and said he's looking at the Yankees as a fresh start -- the better he plays against lefties, the more likely he believes he is to grab some at-bats against righties. On first impression Sexson seems soft-spoken and ready to accept his role with the Yankees. He may fit in fine.

Here's Joe Girardi: "He used to ruin a lot of my nights when I was with the Cubs and he was with the Brewers. That's what I remember most about him. I actually said to him today that if he had been on my team then, maybe I would have slept a little bit better  at night. He seemed to always come up with a big home run late in a game. He was a force.

"Sometimes you have down years but that doesn't mean you're not still a good player. I believe Richie Sexson is still a good player. ... He's 33 years old. It's not like he's an old man. I still think there's a lot of good baseball left in Richie Sexson."

Other notes and quotes: The Yankees had a 1 p.m. workout at the Stadium. Everyone except the All-Stars, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera had to attend. They worked on PFP, throwing and BP. ... Johnny Damon will rejoin the team in New York. He'll work out and try to get back to game form on this homestand. ... Brian Bruney is still a few appearances away but could join the Yankees around the end of the month. He last pitched July 14 for Trenton vs. Binghamton. ...

hopefully Sexson can be the right-handed Giambi

Let's go Big Sexy! :P

Let's Go Yank-ees!

Brian Cashman is a genius, apparently. Nice start for Sexson.

Good start for Moose, too! Let's hope he doesn't fall victim to the "I'll only give up 2 runs in 7 innings, but my guys will only score 1 for me. Seems to have happened more often than not to him lately!

wow. I just saw him TAKE 2 pitches w/ 2 strikes. I bet he walks....

HA! I'm good at this. Smith actually walked Sexon the Strike out King when he had him at 2 strikes. How amusing.

ok, so I say Cano Homers! Go Robbie!!!

aw man! No homer. Still, its good to see this team playing with some cajones.

Awesome Win for Yankees Tonight ...

Finally, the Yankees put it all together in a game that hopefully is a sign of many more games like this one the rest of the season ... We had another great start by Mike Mussina, who is now 12-6 this season [one more win than all of last year] ... Mussina, over the last four games, has pitched 24 innings, in which he has given up [a too high] 27 hits, but has allowed only 5 earned runs, 3 walks, and struck-out 24 batters, for an ERA of 1.88. Because of the lack of run support, Mussina is only 2-1 over his last four starts ... Also, the bullpen was perfect tonight, pitching three no-hit innings ... David Robertson struck-out the side in the 7th; Edwar Ramirez had two strikeouts in the 8th; and, LaTroy Hawkins closed out the 7-1 win, by pitching a scoreless 9th, with one strikeout ... And, "Don't You Know, Robinson Cano Had The Big Hit Of The Game", a three-run homer in the bottom of the third, that put the Yankees ahead for good, 4-1, in the game, at the time ... A-Rod also had a homerun, and went 3-4, in the Yankees 10-hit attack ... Great Victory, and Great way to start the second half ... Go Yankees !!! ... Jimmy [27NYY] ...

http://baseballtheyankeesandlife.mlblogs.com/

David Robertson is going to be great.

Indeed, nothing but accolades to toss out about last night!

Big Sexy doesn't look totally washed up, he looks like a guy that can still hit and play d!

Moose looked like a stud and his numbers bear it out.

Cano showed us that brialliance we all know he's got, working a count and then crushing the one he can handle!

Robertson is my new mystery man...

Indeed, what an all-around fantastic start to the second half!!

Let's keep that momentum going! Yank-ees!

I've been talking to a bunch of my friends and fellow Yankees' fans about the whole Richie Sexson deal, and I'm honestly thrilled about it (although some of my friends don't feel the same way). Our offense vs. lefties this year has been dismal, and we're in the top 7 or so for lowest batting average against lefties (under .260 last I knew), but adding Sexson (who although has been having a bad year, was hitting .344 vs lefties) should help us considerably in that department. The financial risk is minimal as well, so why not see what happens. Think of it this way, if he comes in and hits .250ish overall with 14-18 homers and 40-55 rbi's for the rest of the year, that'll be more offensive production we'll see from Melky (unfortunately though I must add), and the cost will be less. I think he'll be a great compliment to Giambi over at 1st.

What is the deal with our movements going into the trading deadline? Are there any rumblings out there that have us making a move or 2? I think we definitely need to make a move or 2 in the pitching department. I honestly feel that if we want to make a solid push to make the playoffs, we won't be able to make the ride with Ponson and Rasner as 2 of our starters. Our bullpen has been performing exceptionally well over the last month or so (and I hear Brian Bruney is making progress in his rehab assignment), but what are the chances of us acquiring Fuentes for Colorado or even Huston Street if he is in fact going to be available? Street is a proven closer, wouldn't be a rent-a-player like Fuentes (Street is signed through 2010, and Fuentes is a FA at the end of the yr, even though the Yankees could sign him but you know what I mean), he's young and would combine with Rivera to be one of the deadliest 8th/9th inning combos in baseball (like back to the Rivera/Wetteland days), and could potentially take over the closers job at the end of Rivera's contract.

How about starting pitching? They're hoping Wang is back by September and Hughes sometime in August, but can we bank on both of those actually happening? Are there any potential starters out there that the Yankees are interested in making a deal for, or do you think they'll just wait till the off-season to make a push for C.C Sabathia and/or Ben Sheets or some other higher profiled FA pitchers? Do you think they'll make a VERY serious offer to Mark Teixeira (I sure hope they do)? I know this is a lot for a single blog post, but I haven't posted in a while and once I got started I just couldn't stop lol.

This game symbolizes this team's problems in a nutshell. 23 guys left on base and in a 2-2 game when with ANY hitting this game should be 7-2. Look at the bottom of the 2nd, ducks on a pond and Jeter, Abreu and A-Rod all strikeout. NOT even putting the damn ball in player. These are not rookies or bench players. These are three guys this team NEEDS to produce in this situation. Striking out is NOT producing. Next time bunt Girardi, if they aren't going to at least put the damn ball in play.

TWELVE MEN LEFT ON BASE TWELVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this game should have been very lopsided by now, and Joba should have been cruising to a win

only ONE HIT between Jeter, Abreu, A-Rod, Giambi, and Posada

Aussie Bryan was about to post almost the exact same as above, the second innings is looking as though it could be costly runners on second and third none out and with two runs already in from the lower order and then three strike outs to end the real threat. That should have ben the game there and then. The consistant problem again reared it's ugly head.

AB

nice job, Farnsworth.. if the bats can SOMEHOW get a run in, then Mo can hold it for a win

Wow, great game our offense is having huh guys? 1-4 in our lineup today at the end of the 8th is 0-13 with 5 K's and 15 runners left on (7 alone by A-rod.... unreal). Turn to 5-9 and the stats are 7-19 with 2 K's and 11 runners left on base. That is just unacceptable. The offense has been giving Joba some serious run support since he made the transition to a starter..... lol sarcasm.

Give Mo the ball in a non-save situation this season, and how many times has he given up runs? Apparently he can only close the door when we have a lead this year, not when the game is tied. Farnsworth threw an 11 pitch 1-2-3 frame in the 8th, put him out there for the 9th. This would never have happened if our offense could've produced SOMETHING. So frustrating to watch this crap.

this game should have been won in the second inning with 2 men in scoring position and no outs

LAY OFF OF MO, DUDE. He;s the best relief pitcher in history.

Professor farnesworth?

Yeah...right

BETEMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thought have seen it all this year in ways to lose. Christialn falls stealing when clearly he would have made it..

Just as this written Bettemit tis it with a two out double in the ninth. They have got out of jail.

Are
you
Kidding
me??????

HE SLIPS?????

My god...the WB gets a freaking HIT to tie the game!!!!!

OH MY FREAKING GODDDDDDDD!!!!

Holy Carp.
He's off my Sheeet list for a day....

Wow. We got some guts after the all-star break.

Gardner is going to win it.

ACK. He had some good swings, though. He's going to be a good player, really.

Bonus baseball!

Sexon is going to win it, hitting as the DH in place of giambi. This much, ! know! Ha, what a fun day. I just wish it wasn't the same ole same ole-3-14 RISP....it shouldn't be THIS "interesting"

Maybe Gardner didn't win it but You have to give Our last 4 hitters some credit. Jeter, Abreu, A-rod, giambi, & Posada combine 1 -18; While betermit, cabrera, cano, and gardner combine 9-19. Hope we can win this game.

Jose "Brodeur" Molina.

Its about time the bottom of the lineup contributes something....attaboy Edwar!!

Sper, no way we put Farnsworth in for Mo. Mo is still Our best reliever, but I have to say that Farnsworth have been amazing the last month. I hope he continues to pitch that well.

I like Fuentes and Marte over Street because they are lefties. Plus, I think street is over-rated.

Blevins is in! Ha! I am confident we can win this game. Sexon is coming in for Giambi's spot...just wait!

The ceiling on the duggout is too short for Sexon.

Is it me, or does Sexon look like he's holding a toothpick when he's holding a bat?

That is one BIG boy. What is he, like 6'7"???

I'm not saying to ever put in Farnsworth over Mo, and by no means am I saying Mo isn't the man or the best closer in the history of the game. All I'm saying is this season he's struggled to hold down tie games, with Farnsworth throwing an 11 pitch 1-2-3 inning and having pitched as well as he has over his last month+, why not throw him out there again.

FIFTEEN MEN LEFT ON BASE (AND COUNTING)

SEVENTEEN LOB!!!!!!!!!!

man. I'm having almost as bad a day as A-Rod. 0-5? wow.
At least Undertaker Sexon is TRYING to take pitches and work counts. I think he'll do well.

Jose Molina would be an All-Star if he didn't have to hit.

Well, I hope Betermit can win it this time

Nah, I'd take Mo in a Tie game, save situation, ahead 12 runs, behind 8 runs, on a train or on a plane...I do not like Farnsworth and ham, I SO do not like him, Sam I am.

I REALLY don't trust him one bit. I have seen him blow more games then a $10 hooker and I really can't see him doing what he's doing now in a high pressure situation. He is always a 3 run homer waiting to happen.

His fastballs are so straight that, well, I can't think of a witty analogy. They just look like beach balls when he can't get his slider over.

Mo is just unfocused for some reason when he's not in a save situation. He DID strike out the side after giving up the go-ahead...so I don't think there is anything wrong with him.

That no-talent loser s chmuck Bet "I'll be gone before the end of the season" apuke couldn't win a game with his life if his life depended on it.

EDWAR!!!! 4 K's in 2.0 innings! at least some bright spots in this offensively dismal game

Thermometer has been sick recently. Why the hell do we need a reliever. Screw fuentes, screw marte, and screw street. If Farnsworth, Theremometer (E. Ramirez), and even Veras can continue to pitch like this, why waste time on getting a reliever. What we need is another bat.

is it gonna be 18 LOB? or a walkoff single?

EIGHTEEN LOB

here's where the problem's been today.. 2 for 20 between Jeter, Abreu, A-Rod, Giambi, and Posada - the old men got tired today

Of course this team needs another reliever, it was overworked in the first half and it continues to be overworked., So this team definitely needs another reliever, these guys can't keep it up forever.

Of course this team needs another reliever, it was overworked in the first half and it continues to be overworked., So this team definitely needs another reliever, these guys can't keep it up forever.

Once again Gardner shows why he shouldn't be in the majors at this time. This team needs quality depth which something that has been lacking on this team all season long. Can hardly wait to Damon gets back next week so that Gardner can go back down and develop more.

This lineup needs more than one bat, it will take at least two or three where one will be part of a pathetic bench.

btw the record for most team LOB is 20.. by the Yankees in 1956 against the Red Sox

the Yankees are closing in on their own record with EIGHTEEN currently

[Source: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/recbooks/left_on_base_records.shtml]

Well, I have no problem w/ getting another reliever. But, the offense should be our main focus of improvent. Early, you said the pirates want ohlendorf in the package for marte and Nady. I'll do that in a heartbeat. I just don't know where you got that information from.

What this team needs to learn is the fundamentals of baseball. When there are runners in scoring position PUT THE DAMN BALL IN PLAY!!!! Shorten your swing for Gods Sake. Hit the other way, learn how to bunt. Do something ANYTHING but strike out. 33 LOB that is BAD!!!!!!

We only need one outfielder. That's the only position we have a hole in. Every other position is taken.
ss - jeter
3B - alex
2B- cano
C - Molina/posada
1B - giambi/sexon/betermit/posada
DH - posada/damon/giambi/sexon
OF - melky/damon or abreu/ ? (Nady/bay)

I agree with you the offense should be a priority right now, the fact that this team is struggling to beat a team who is primarily using a lineup of minor leaguers, in extra innings proves that. I was merely saying that this team does need another reliever considering the workload it has had this season, and not neglect that fact. The pen can't pitch like it has forever.

bases loaded, hit the ball to the outfield molina

if the Yankees don't score (and thus win the game here), then they would have set the record for most team LOB at 21

Well that's one way of winning a game, get hit by a pitch. It's a win!!!

WALKOFF HIT-BY-PITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAY TO STAND THERE MOLINA!!!! the Yankees didn't even win by a hit.. Oakland had to hit a Yankee for the Yankees to win

LOL, so who's the hero? Molina or Lenny DiNardo?

Um...what?

Did they just have a "walk-off HBP"????

huh?

Did somone put qualudes in my juice this morning??

I've NOW seen it all.

No it still needs a bench. We've seen what happens when this team doesn't have quality depth. This team has gone too long without one. Betapuke isn't much, his BA will continue to drop, and Suxson, like Betapuke will strikeout way too much, and won't hit much for an average. This team doesn't need that kind of depth, but a player who can play multiple positions, good defense, and more offense than what a .200 hitter like Betapuke can provide. A team that has been struggling as it has all season on offense needs a bench to provide some offense to lean on at least otherwise you will get the kind of offense the Yanks have been getting all season.

Bob Ueker is the MVP of this game.

despite the win, it was pretty disgusting offensively today except for Robbie and Betemit - the old men (Jeter, Abreu, A-Rod,Giambi, and Posada) went 3 for 21 - EIGHTEEN LOB

matt, don't get me wrong. I'll be much happier if they do end up getting reliever as well. It'll be even better. I'm just saying that if cashman is going to do any trade this month, he should at least trade for 1 hitter. If that doesn't improve our offense, then so be it. We deserve to miss the playoffs

so who would you rather have,

Bay/Marte

or

Holiday/Fuentes?

I think Bedard may be available too.

amire,

I agree with you wholeheartedly, not disagreeing with you.

Bay/Marte would be better, from what I'm hearing Holliday is going to be expensive.

Bedard isn't available and even if he is he's proving to be an injury risk in the last two seasons. Holliday has a huge price tag and unfortunately so does one of my favorite non-Yankees Xavier Nady.

IT doesn't look like the tightness in Bedard's left shoulder improved during the break so the Mariners won't start him prior to July 31. I have heard the Dodgers would be willing to trade Brad Penny or Derrik Lowe.

According to MLBtraderumors.com, Bay doesn't want to leave Pittsburgh at all. Also it looks like Tampa may be in the lead for Fuentes since the can offer more.

The Yankees COULD offer a considerable amount for Fuentes, or Street or a SP or another outfielder/hitter/player off the bench, etc. The real question is, will they go for it? We won't make the playoffs counting on Ponson/Rasner as 40% of our starting staff. Another bullpen arm would save some stress on our current staff as well as distribute the work-load evenly so pitchers don't start to break down (like Scott Proctor).
