Greetings from Fenway Park
Just checking in here from high above Fenway Park in Boston, a city where it can be more challenging than you'd think to find working wireless internet. Either way, the monsoons have stopped here in New England and we're being treated to a gorgeous afternoon - not too hot, not too cool, just right for Joba Chamberlain vs. Josh Beckett.
Remember when Hank Steinbrenner spoke optimistically about Joba and called him "our Beckett?" Here's a chance to see where he's at on that topic. The Hood Milk blimp is circling the Fens four hours before game time and all seems right with the world.
Ian Kennedy threw 6 2/3 hitless innings at Triple-A and, with those numbers, made a pretty good pitch for the rotation. Did Kennedy have a feeling he was going to make the lineup look stupid or did he just have his 'A' stuff? If he can start to approximate the prospect the Yankees hoped he'd be, there's one way to help out the rotation. The scuttlebutt has the Bombers discussing Barry Bonds behind closed doors on Thursday in Tampa, but no one knows how quickly that might have been shot down.

Bryan,
What do you hear about IPK being called up? How long do Rasner or Ponson stay in the rotation with Ian pitching lights out at AAA? Are they worried that they'll ruin him with an early call, hoping instead to get him jazzed for a mid-late August callup for a 2007 redux?

Chaz,
I'm with you man. I would rather forgo a championship this year than win one with Barroid Bonds. I already get enough TIHS up here from my Red Suchs friends on the steroid issue. I don't want Bonds anywhere near my team.

I'd rather talk about Moose getting into the HOF.

Kennedy's barking at Rasner's heels, but you know, Ras threw pretty darn well last time out. That's about what you ask of a fifth starter. In the long run, though, Kennedy's the better prospect and you have to expect him to get another chance (barring a trade). They do want Kennedy to earn his way back up and it seems like he's doing it.

Or Joba having a breakout game, a la a 1986 Roger Clemens striking out 20 or something like that. A 2-hit CG shutout.

I think Ian should first pitch 6 2/3 hitless and scoreless innings at AA before we even consider... but that's just me. So what he no-hit AAA ballers?

AAA is higher than AA.

Thanks Bryan. You're spot on about Rasner's last outing but the fact is, he's been less than stellar since his 3-0 start. In fact, he's struggled to go more than 5 innings since throwing 8 against KC way back in the beginning of June (a loss by the way). I'm ready to see Rasner find his way to the pen in long relief and give IPK another chance. I'd be very very sad to see him traded away.

Showalter had a pretty good take on the trade deadline last night. Can a team make a trade for someone better than they are getting back from injury? We do have Wang and Phil Hughes coming back this season. Hughes in August, and Wang in September. We seem to be winning games (when we hit) with the staff we have already, so why trade anyone for pitching? Unless we can get a big bat (NNNNNOT BONDS), I think the Yankees should just stick to their guns.

Someone else who is quickly making waves in the minors is Melancon. 6-0 with Trenton, 30 hits in 46+ innings, 12 BB and 43 k's. Hitters are only .183 against him.

He's going to be good (Melancon). Honestly, I don't think we'll have to worry about pitching for a long time.

anyone besides me notice that in "pitching probables" for Sunday, we are still "TBA"?? I was thinking that that might mean IPK would get the call but that would be on short rest. No reason for that. Why wouldn't Ponson be listed? It's his turn....

Chaz I'd rather be 0-fer-my-lifetime than to have Bonds on my team.
And I do like Ian, just not that impressed with stories from the minors, we already know he can do that in the minors, we're waiting and wanting to see him do that here! :)

Forget Bonds, He's in no shape to play. We need a good RH bat in the lineup now. Why trade for Washburn, We probably have what we need in our system. Now I would go for a trade in bringing Ichiro to NY, We could possibly set up a package to get him, although he is a LH bat, he's a great bat and lead off hitter also a slick fielder with an arm. What about Sui for Benji? This would pave the way for Posada's operation. Who is not our future at 1B....and we'll need him in 2009 behind the plate.. Tex is still an option at 1B..
Bruneys last outing in AAA shows he may not be ready. Ian
may be close to a return to the big show..

Ponson has performed beyond what was expected of him. I only hope he can continue. I wish him well. Lester has the edge in this one, we will need hot bats to beat him. We need 2 of 3 in this series.

Bruney will come back and be great for the Yanks. He was lights out when we first traded for him 2 years ago, struggled last year, and was one of the big stories at the beginning of this year. Like Brighton, he needs to keep his way down in order to suceed in the bigs, and he showed maturity/responsibility by losing 20lbs this offseason. I think Brighton might have gained 20lbs, but I don't see him coming out of the pen....which is a shame since the Yanks thought so highly of him when we shipped Jaret Wright to Baltimore to nab him. Hopefully he and Bruney will be back soon.
Also, I've noticed very littler grief for Farnsworth the past couple of weeks, now that he's pitching weel. He's in his final year as a Yankee and PERHAPS finding his groove. What do you do with this guy come offseason time?

Would we be able to switch someone in Ponson's spot? Rasner or Moose maybe? Perhaps we don't like that matchup either? :p

Does anyone think the Players' Association would sue if Bonds is not signed for the most obvious fit?
Report any abuse or spam
Anyone looking at Melancon's numbers at AA should also check the numbers for Anthony Claggett. However, I think the master plan is to leave them at AA the rest of this season. And Bruney will likely stay at SWB until we see what the trade market brings. One way or another it doesn't look good for LaTrine Hawkins!

I dunno, I mean I've tried to pull for Farnsy for so long... I will admit he's doing well lately... and that's worth something, but I don't know if it's worth a new contract. :P

I'd also be inclined to pass on Washburn. I'd rather get a lefty with some potential for improvement or promote someone at SWB. I think they want Kennedy to follow up with a string of dominant starts as he was last night. michael,
I think you're thinking of Jack Taschner, he's been pretty mediocre since joining the Giants (career ERA 4.57), I think the Yanks can do better than him.
Report any abuse or spam
ok, so I'm going to settle this thing about Bonds being the greatest hitter of all time.
I can name 5 guys RIGHT NOW that are better then him and will always be better then him, no matter what. And if you look at the numbers, no matter what era they were in, they'd STILL be better then bonds. with or without the Roids:
Babe Ruth
Lou Gehrig
Rogers Hornsby
Ted Williams
Willie Mays
And when its all said and done, A-Rod will be better, and maybe Pujouls (MAYBE)...Honus wagner and Ty Cob were better hitters, even though they didn't hit for "power" (yeah, and the baseballs now are wound tighter and fly out of the parks on broken bat hits....)
Barry bonds was a top 20 player before the roids, but not higher. He wasn't "alltime" before 2001, like the icons that Ruth and Williams are.
Chaz hit the proverbial nail on the head when he called him a "pariah". He is the Qunitessential Pariah, the likes of which can only be found in Shoeless Joe Jackson and Pete Rose.
Bonds SHOULD NOT go into the hall unil Jackson and Rose are IN themselves. That won't happen.
Barry Bonds is a cheater, if not because of steroids, then because of other drugs that are less traceable, like HGH, insulin, and even viagra (which improves blood flow to the extremeties not just mr johnson-just ask Rafael Palmeiro: coincedence?)
He beat the system, but the public may be a little more educated and less gullible then he thinks.
I agree with Chaz. I will NOT endorse the Yankees if they get Bonds. if they do, SEASON OVER. I will pull my MLB.TV subscription, and I will not buy anything w/ an interlocking NY until he is off the team.
Cansaco was enough. I could "tolerate" him, because he is dumb. But Bonds? Thats a BOO waiting to happen.
I think, if there is still time, we should all organize a letter and petition to NOT sign Bonds and let the Brass know that we WILL NOT be patrons of the NY Yankees, the YESnetwork, or any other interest of the Yankees if they sign this alleged felon.
We should send this letter to Hank himself and let him know that although we support the team, we will not support this player who has a blatant disregard for sportsmanship and class. AT LEAST Andy Pettite came clean, to a certain degree.
and another thing: If we don't make a deal by wednesday and get at least 3 of the 4 components we need, and wait till middle of august for hughes to get back, we may not have anything to play for in sept.
and why are they even waiting on hughes? He has given this team NOTHING this year but a burned out bullpen. let him develop in the minors this year and see if he can earn his way back for next year. I don't trust him; and wang is coming back from a bad ankle injury. I dont't trust the health of either of these two guys.
Report any abuse or spam
Farnsworth has been doing pretty well only because he hasn't been in any high pressure situations, if the Yanks were smart they would keep it that way. There's no need to re-sign him to another contract since he is nothing more than a middle inning reliever who can't go more than one inning. The Yanks are loaded with middle inning relievers already, just let Farnsworth go, I don't think anyone will miss him.
Melancon is the closer of the future of this team, I wouldn't be surprised to see him for a short stint with the team in September, nor would I be surprised if we see Kennedy fairly soon replacing Rasner.
Report any abuse or spam
yeah, we have our own Jack Taschner called billy traber....I want Marte.
Report any abuse or spam
I think Kennedy is a head case who can't do it in the spotlight. If he comes up here, look for his ERA to be over 5 @ the stadium. He made some really telling comments about his attitude a few months back, and I think he's a primadonna with very, VERY, average stuff. I'd say trade him NOW while people in the league still think he's got value.
His value will drop if he comes back up and gets shelled...then in the off season you ae LUCKY to get a mediocre back up infielder for him....
Report any abuse or spam
First of all, Kennedy doesn't have much experience at the major league level. He's not going to get experience by keeping him in the minors where he has shown he can succeed in, so there's no point in keeping him in the minors. The only way he will progress is by keeping him in the majors and let him take his lumps, and hopefully he will learn from that. In short he needs time to grow as a starter.
With that being said, I wouldn't mind seeing him traded along with Ohlendorf, Tabata, and possibly Jason Jones or Horne for Nady, and Marte. It would be insane to think it will take less than that to get those guys. It makes since Tabata has shown he is a troubled player and could be a little overrated, and the Pirates have shown strong interest in Ohlendorf plus the Pirates are getting a pitcher who is possibly close to being major league ready.

Looks like Yanks have their eyes on Laird. Good choice. There's just not much out there in terms of catchers. Hopefully this team won't go after a catcher who is a mediocre hitter like Torrealba.

Laird would be a good addition-but is he better then what we have? He does play in a bam box.
Nady and Marte are the best choices, and I can live with Washburn, I've decided.

But the pirates have to take one or the other: Horne or Kennedy. I think they should be happy to get Ohlendorf and Tabata, and if they want Kennedy and/or Horne they need to swap Nady for Bay or give us something else.

More on Christian repeated from another blog:
No LA LA Land I'm not kidding. And the fact that Christian is much older than most rookies is a positive factor for me! I look at the Phillies Chris Coste as an example! I don't want to send any prospect to the Pirates for Bay or Nady even if there is a guarantee that Nady would continue to hit .330!
I also believe it is easier for a rookie from our system to perform than an imported veteran. The fans are much harder on the veteran especially if he gets off to a slow start.

Pirates pulled Nady from their lineup in tonight's game with no injury according to. Also since the Yanks see Washburn as nothing but a salary dump, they refuse to take him unless the M's eat his salary or take Igawawful who the M's don't think much of.

Personally I don't want to see Horne going anywhere myself, but it will take at least 4 minor leaguers to get Nady and Marte. I also named Jones as another possibility since he is only in AA and not as close to being ready for the majors as Horne is.

Robert,
How do you expect to get Nady or Bay or any player without prospects? It's not likely any team is going to take any of the Yanks' aged, injury-prone vets with their huge contracts and give up any of their starters. You have to spend something to get something. Trading the vets isn't going to get the job done. Teams like the Pirates want the younger players who they can develop and have a chance of having a long, successful career with their team, not players who are atthe end of their careers.

I wouldn't use an unknown like Christian or any rookie in crunch time. It's just too risky to use inexperienced rookies as starters. You're more likely not going to get positive results, a good example of that is Gardner who has done nothing to help the offense, apparently the Yanks agree with me too otherwise they wouldn't have gone after Nady. Gardner needs to go back down to the minors and develop more.

Matt,
Don't jump down my throat but I think Gardner is being groomed to lead off for us in 2010 after Damon is gone. He needs MLB at bats and will likely stay in the nine hole and play left or center field. If Tabata is gone, I see Cabrera switching to right field replacing Abreu.

I really think the Yankees should re-sign Bobby Abreu to a three-year deal for [2009, '10, and 11'] ... He's too big of a bat for the Yankees to just give-up ... BP,
I don't know if Nady has enough speed for left, but, if we could tolerate Matsui I guess Nady could play there. I would not want to see Gardner lose at bats though!
And I must have missed something. What is the Kennadia thing about?

"The Yankees have indicated that they will not give Washburn a contract extension or cash bonus for waiving his no-trade rights, but the source said that Washburn would not necessarily require either inducement, saying, "There are ways around that."
Like how? money under the table? A vile?

Thank you George for making this deal. If we gave them ohelndorf, tabata, coke, and kontos, then we robbed them. Ohlendorf is nothing special. So it's really 3 minor leaguers for 2 proven players. Now, our bullpen and our lineup is fixed. If we get a catcher, like Laird or B. Molina, that's even better; but I think our offense will be fine w/ what we have.
--------
However, our offense today SUCKS. 9 Hits, 1 Run, 14 LOB That is pathetic. Chamberlain is pitching a Stellar game. I hope he continues pitching well the rest of the game.
-----
I just hope now the redsox don't sign texiera. I don't give a crap if they get fuentes.

Atleast we kept Kennadia as a chip and we will move him but not for free.

This is one of the best games I have watched of the Yanks this year. So grreat. Oh, and I am excited for the Xavier Nady/Marte trade for BOTH my favorite teams (NYY, PIT). Check out my input soon at...

We're 2 for 5. We need Molina, another reliever and maybe Wash.

Won't Nady be at 1B by the way? He has played many seasons at the position, and I am 90% sure thats his natural spot.

bpark, why do we need to trade kennedy, unless we include him in a package for a good starting pitcher. Personally, I like Kennedy more than washburn. Screw Washburn. Why pay a pitcher like him so much money, when Hughes and Wang are coming before the playoffs.
-----
I say we keep kennedy, and maybe he'll turn out to be a good #5 starter.

Wow, this one's a nailbiter!
The kid is pitching his guts out and has managed to outshine Beckett, thanks to Giambino's execution on the shift! Ahhh, what a beatiful ting...
Now does Francona trot Beckett back out there and does Girardi trot Joba back? I say Girardi goes pen but shouldn't yet.
