A trade deadline to remember
The 2008 trade deadline will go down as one for the ages, with today's Manny Ramirez blockbuster capping us off. I cannot remember one with as many recognizable impact players and future Hall of Famers switching teams -- Rich Harden, C.C. Sabathia, Pudge Rodriguez and Xavier Nady, Ken Griffey Jr., Mark Teixiera... on and on it went.
Brian Cashman has a 5:30 p.m. ET press conference to discuss the deadline. Unless something transpired that we don't know about, the last move for the Yankees was sending Alberto Gonzalez to the Nationals for right-handed reliever Jhonny Nunez. The Yankees' 40-man roster is now at 38.
Pudge is in uniform, wearing No. 12 and batting eighth in the lineup. He set off a photo frenzy at the bat rack in the dugout just a few minutes ago and called it "a dream" to be here. The Yankees are a better playoff contender now than they were on July 25, before the Nady/Damaso Marte deal, there's no doubt about it.
Revisiting that Jan. 2007 Randy Johnson trade with the D-Backs:
RHP Ross Ohlendorf: Dealt with three others to Pirates for Xavier Nady & Damaso Marte
IF Alberto Gonzalez: Traded to Nationals for RHP Jhonny Perez (2-8, 4.85 ERA in 26 games at Single-A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg)
RHP Luis Vizcaino: Big part of '07 Yankees bullpen, allowed to walk and replaced by RHP LaTroy Hawkins, earning the Yankees LHP Jeremy Bleich as draft compensation from Colorado.
RHP Steven Jackson: Currently 1-0 with a 4.05 ERA in 21 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

NEW YORK -- In a swap of minor leaguers, the New York Yankees traded shortstop Alberto Gonzalez to the Washington Nationals for pitcher Jhonny Nunez on Thursday.

I'll miss Kyle Farnsworth.............but not the pending heart attacks. I felt the same way about Dave Righetti! So he’s worth Pudge Rodriguez! Nice!

Another team absolutely going for it this year is the Angels. How could Atlanta pass up an established MLB first baseman in Kotchman? I was hoping they’d take a Betemit, Farnsworth, Miranda package! The Angels want Teixeira batting right handed against Kazmir, Lester (especially at Fenway), or Pettite. I think it’s doubtful they will push to sign Tex for 2009 as they have Kendry Morales (another switch hitter) waiting at AAA for promotion! Boras will ensure he is a FA!

Dude what a cool crazy trade deadline this year...but nothing tops Manny being traded to the Dodgers, will he have to cut that gross hair of his since Torre is the manager? I liked the Pudge move, he was a God down here in Texas, I can't believe he's on the Yanks. So I wonder if Mark Melancon does well in triple A, will he be called up soon to give the Yanks a shot in the arm down the road, or would that be rushing him too much. And I'm hoping for at least a series split with the Angels.

All I can say is good riddance... but somehow I know that Bud Selig will somehow have us playing the Dodgers for a 6 game set next year.
What do you guys think, do you think Boston got most of his production returned in Bay or is this a sort of lopsided trade?

Yes, The Yankee Killer is gone! The Red Sox always make the dumbest moves from trading Babe Ruth, Sparky Lyle, and now Manny. Yankee pitchers keep the game plan Ortiz = Ball Four!!!
Report any abuse or spam
I definately think the Red Sox got hosed...not only did they give up Manny, and pay his salary, they gave away two veryy good prospects...look at Bay's numbers last year, hes over-achieving this year....plus no one knows how he will handle the Boston pressure...

I was showing some sarcasm Mike. I'm just teasing but the Angels do have homerun power even now with the addition of Tex. I can't beleive Manny is not a RedSox and he plays for Torre? Jason Bay is a great ball but surely not Manny. This is has to have a affect on Ortiz doesn't it?

Hopefully the comments are working better now. It was mainly due to the Trade Talk blog, which was accounting for about 75 percent of all MLBlogs traffic. Some server upgrades hopefully will prevent such outages in the future. I had the same overall reaction to the 2008 trade frenzy; usually we are talking about the deals that didn't happen. This was incredible. By the way, will be interesting to see what Red Sox Nation thinks of http://alyssa.mlblogs.com -- have a feeling that will be viral. Are all of your commenters also MLBloggers, and if not, why not, since it's FREE to blog here and the only place where a purely baseball site with billions of annual page views points to a purely baseball blogging community? Even if I had 20 other blogs on the Internet (I do), I would still create an MLBlog just to drive traffic to my other ones.

Once again the Yanks show how incapable they are of beating the Angels as they are now 15-24 against the Angels since '04. This team was smoked tonight, this team's best chances are for a split at best if this team is lucky otherwise they could lose 3 of four or even a sweep. This team has momentum from today's late rally? I doubt this team has any momentum after having their heads handed to them and seeing tomorrow's matchup of Santana (11-5 3.57) vs. Ponson, who is absolute garbage. Maybe Mussina and Rasner can pull something out of their hats, although I have my doubts about Rasner.

Nah, time is not up (and doubt will get swept). But anyway, check back with me August 14th, after six more games with LAA, four with Texas and three with Minn, re maybe "time is up." Next few weeks will be critical.

How can a team gel when you're throwing a brand new catcher into a rotation that could be changed for a few Mexican Leaguers any day now, Nady is playing everywhere on the OF and the day after he finally gets a hit he's benched, and the lineup is completely different every day? Jeter needs a day off, completely no DH or anything Abreu needs to DH with Nady in right and Damon in left. Thats the best possible lineup you can make Nady is a good fielder with a hose, Damon's noodle arm wont hurt us too bad in left and Melky can field center (the hardest OF position White Sox GM) very well. Abreu is a career .400 hitter with 3-4 HR as a DH. Pudge will be OK he was thrust into the greatest place to play ball on earth after catching a 2AM limo to Detroit from Cleveland and an 8AM flight into NYC, I would have been surprised if he looked like he was 100%. This team will be fine, theres a reason LAA is the best team in baseball they're friggen good?!? This game is now the biggest game in the season so far, we lost a 1/2 game to the BoSucks and we cannot get swept and have to fight for the split. I thought all along a split was a win against this team who steamrolled the Sox. And whoever said the Rays were phony, c'mon they're legit, and if you know baseball you're not surprised that they've done this. It's about time they've had the 1st pick like 5 years in a row I was saying this year or next year the AL East would have to watch out. The Yanks and Sox are fighting for second right now because the Rays will not come back to them and neither team looks poised enough or has the schedule to make a run like 20/22 that may be needed to catch the Rays.

Don't forget Minnesota in the AL Wild Card mix....

But, bottom line, if the Yanks can't beat Angels in August and September, why "sqeak" into Division Series only to get steamrollered in October like twice before? Remaining nine regular season Yanks - LAA games are key to 2008 for NYY.

LAA, btw, took last 7 in row from BoSox in 2008, to finish 8 - 1. Main reason there currently is an AL Wild Card race.
