Bad diagnosis for Wang

From the Yankees:

RHP Chien-Ming Wang was examined today at New York Presbyterian Hospital Columbia Medical Center by Yankees Team Physician, Dr. Stuart Hershon and Dr. Jason Greisberg, Foot and Ankle Specialist. Imaging studies revealed a mid-foot sprain of the Lisfranc ligament of the right foot and a partial tear of the peroneal longus tendon of the right foot. Wang will be on crutches and wear a protective boot for a minimum of six weeks.

****!

This will lead the Yanks to panic AGAIN and make a boneheaded trade. Cashman, don't be stupid. Do NOT trade for dead weight!

I'll almost assure ya'll that this spells the end of Robbie Cano in pinstripes. Rest assured he'll hit .330 every season for someone else while we regret whatever scrub Cashman deals for him. The mere thought of dealing a 24 year-old .300 hitter (no matter how bad he's slumping) for a 30+ year-old #3 starter like Penny is laughable. He's 30 years old and is sporting a 5.88 era. 2 Brad Pennies are not worth 1 Cano, even if he was hitting .125.

Teams that we will be in trade talks with will most assuredly know that they have us over a barrell with Wang out. They'll be asking for Cano, Cabrera, Hughes, Kennedy, and Joba for their #5 starter. I can't wait to see what happens here.

The price for EVERY player we would have been interested in has officially doubled.

As Wangster limped off that third base bag in Houston so did are hopes and dreams.....

chaz,

I agree wholeheartedly with that. A player like Sabathia would have been very expensive before Wang went down, but like I said before I don't you will see a player like him or any player anytime soon. Most teams, like Cleveland, are still in it so we won't see any trade for at least another month or 1 1/2 months.

At least no one here has jumped to the most ridiculous conclusion before even playing a game since the diagnosis. Oh wait, you all have. We will actually probably have to trade Arod too, possibly Jeter. Im sure one of you would have suggested this momentarily, so I saved you the time. Lets calm down and not overreact. This is a terrible situation, but suggestions for trades havent even been throw out. They didnt trade the top young talent for Santana, why will they do it for anything less than Sabathia?

Say it isn't so? It's no ones fault but whets with this Girardi conditioning and training had a worse affect then Torres coffee breaks.
"It makes you stronger as a club and as individuals. You've got to find ways to get things done. We were without Alex for a while, [Derek] Jeter and Posada. You have to find a way." Girardi. Yeah, but ya' didn't find a way? We were touching .500 with the whole squad. Wang is a numerous one he pitches well reserves the pen and gets wins. Does Darrel have a miraculous twin brother that we can use? I don't know it would have been reserved but 4-0 in the fifth with Oswalt out I don't see why ya' send Wang? I'm blaming this on someone. The Yankees officially have a rookie starting rotation. Imagine Joba not being a starter now? What timing, did someone see this coming? Well at least we swept the Padres, future reference.

There won't be any trades sticking with plan A. If the offense can carry the ballclub great if not the kids will get plenty of experience.

Fuentes is not coming, he wants to close.

I am sickened by this injury. I agree with Larry, do not make a stupid reaction trade. We need to try to ride this out and hope Kennedy or Hughes can come back and contribute.

redsunkktt, there is no way that you can blame Girardi for that. He doesn't coach third and who would have known that the Yankees were going to win that game 13-0. Its easy to blame the manager after the fact. In the end, its the players. They have got to produce. Girardi does all of the strategy stuff, but without the players producing, what good is it? Loosing Wang is brutal, but no way is it Girardi's fault that he is hurt. I think as fans we are really going to see what type of Yankee team we are rooting for during this period of time. Will it be a Yankee team that overcomes adversity and finds a way to win and gets back into the race, or will it be a Yankee team that folds because they do not believe in themselves and feeling sorry for themselves, but meanwhile the rest of the league doesn't care. In my opinion, we have seen the team that feels sorry for themselves for most of the season until recently. I really hope that the Yankees continue to win like this and man up and get it done, just as Girardi said.

I'm not holding Girardi at fault at all my point is with the tuff spring training regime' I was hoping for a less injury plagued season. The Yankees were pounding and had been pounding the Stros' staff Wang already was inline for a win, the game was followed by a off day, replacing Wang at third runner wouldn't have been out of the question? With Derek Jeter up there with a sure clutch hit the danger of a possible collision at the plate was predictable. Catch my drift? It really is a shame it but with match ups like Joba vs. Kazmir and Rasner vs. Peavy on paper it just doesn't appeal. There back to the building blocks now Jobas and Rasners performances will be a necessity opposed to an addition. The organization is again looking for someone to step it up and the possibilities are limited this go around. It sure opens the window of opportunity for someone. I assume Giese gets a shot. I think everyone was hope left in Phil but as with Ian there on a timetable. It seems no matter what it is a mere bandage on a very open wound.

I have been a Yankee fan since 1955, living in South America and now in the USA, I want the team to be big and proud. They have been doing a great job through the years, but this is one of the few times that they, the ownweship, has hesitated. To end this rusian roulete about pitching, go an get : C.C. Sabathia. Thank you

I think that the Yankees need C.C. Sabathia this year because getting him and signing him to an extension will allow him to get used to New York and a rotation with Wang (when he gets back and assuming that the Yankees are still in it), Sabathia, Joba, Moose, and Pettitte is lethal on paper. That leaves Rassner out, but he would make a tremendous long man out of the bull pen.

I agree with chaz, the yankees will panic and trade robinson and some other useful player that isnt doing to well right now, then they will be so flustered that they think that some1 like farnsworth can handle 8th inning duties. If you ask me farnswhorth should be traded, or pitch as a setup or mid-reliever. I really hope they think before they act.

Actually, farnsworth should be traded no doubt, for a halfway descent pitcher, someone who can replace rasner or joba and joba should go back down to 8th inning duties, and if not put rasner into the rotation.

I agree with Crashman's stated position about the replacement for Wang. The Yankees do not need to panic and trade away the farm and/or Cano in this situation but look internally. However, if the young players do not pitch to expectations it might be in the Yankees interest to look at picking up Sidney Ponson who was put on waivers by the Rangers. Before I get yell at in this blog the Yankees need a starter to eat up innings and just go .500 in Wang's spot. Ponson might be that possibility if the youngsters do not pan out.

Firing Bobby Meacham might also be a great idea. I didn't think it was possible to be worse Third Base Coach than Willie Randolph, but Meacham's got him beat. With his wildly aggressive style, and usual hurry up around the bag then "slam on the brakes" approach, it was just a matter of time before he got someone seriously injured. Who could have figured that it would be the Ace of the Pitching Staff, who led MLB with 38 wins the past two seasons. And, why exactly was it important that Wang hustle to score from second on a single?!?

With 60% of the Season opening Starting Rotation on the DL, plus 3 Reilvers, Meachem can't be faulted as the sole reason for this train wreck of a Season, merely the last straw. Finally getting rid of "Saint" Torre was great for the beleagured Pitching Staff, especially the abused Bullpen, but letting Larry Bowa go with him was fatal.

Who would have figured that all of the Opening Day SP in their 20's would sustain freak serious injuiries, while the SP Elders in their mid to late 30's and probable last year before retirement would keep rolling along?

the failure to make the trade for santana hurts even more with wang down. pettite n mussina, one will breakdown in july/ aug. Their ages, innings they have pitched in their careers, time catch-up to everyone. they still can pitch, but do not expect them to hold up for a full season. cashman say he will look in house first for a replacement for wang.(LOL) he has someone he has been hiding. that statement shows the gig is up for that dude.

jon,
We didn't trade Hughes and IPK for Santana because our rotation had Wang in it. With him gone for perhaps the whole season and Hughes and IPK proving that they still aren't ready for prime time, all bets are off.
Regardless of what $$$man wants or doesn't want, expect Hank to have a hand in this one.
Now, having said all that, the way this is averted is for us to actually WIN games in the next couple weeks. We win Pettitte's and Rasner's next starts with some solid team O (and not just a single 3-run homer after 2 walks in a 4 hit game) followed up by Joba's first win in a strong 7-8 inning outing and Moose's 11th of the season and we PERHAPS avert catastrophe. I really don't see Cano going anywhere. We just gave him the $$$$$ in a long term contract. No one's going to pick him up and we're not likely to pay 80% of his salary just to have him .300/30 for some other team. Expect Melky's name to come up again tho. With Damon seemingly healthy and a few CF arms on the farm Melky becomes expendable all of a sudden.

Olney said we're going with Giese. He then said we will only be able to get Bedard, Wolf, Blanton, Arroyo or one other guy. He said no way we get Sabathia when the Phillies (or Boston) will have more to offer.

We certainly has MiL options. It's not like we have a bunch of 2-8 pitchers. Trenton has Chase Wright who has big club experience and is 6-1 with a 2.5 era and Jason Jones who is 8-2 with a 2.3 era. At SWB Dan McCutchen, while 1-4 has a 3.6 era in 6 starts with only 4 BBs and 21k's.

We have also been monitoring Garcia but he is on Hughes's timetable.

How do we go with Giese? When was his last start?

And whats the chance that we get Randolph back on the staff? Slim, I know but a boy can hope!

Manaya is a bigger idiot than Crashman. How do guys like this get jobs? Oh I forgot this is the new America where being an *sskisser gets you a job and failure gets rewarded. Blanton or Arroyo might be a possibility. Still do not like the idea of trading Melky.
