Yankees wrap up the trip
What's the deal with a 4:10 p.m. ET start, anyway? Ian Kennedy's return to the big leagues has so far looked a lot like his first six outings of the season, having allowed a leadoff homer to Aki Iwamura and a two-run shot to Shawn Riggins in the fourth. Meanwhile, the $28.5 million man, Scott Kazmir, has been rather dominant against New York, no-hitting the Yankees until Melky Cabrera broke it up with a single in the fourth.
Taking this game out of the equation for a moment, this road trip can hardly be considered a success. Mike Mussina pitched great on Wednesday but the Yankees didn't play particularly well in Detroit, Kei Igawa flopped and Hank Steinbrenner disrupted things by giving the Rays a public pat on the back. Right now, they look a whole lot like a mediocre team just trying to tread water.
The Subway Series lies ahead, but the Yankees shouldn't need those types of games to light a fire under themselves. Here's Johnny Damon: "You definitely want to have bragging rights in your city. Every game we play we've got to go out and play like it's the Mets series or a Red Sox series. Shame on us if we can't get up. We need to come ready to play against any team, rivalry or no rivalry."
We almost just saw the ultimate tough luck exhibition here in the press box, as Carlos Pena fouled a ball back and nearly took out the laptop of a Tampa area writer. That wouldn't be remarkable by itself except that same writer had a screen shattered by a first inning foul ball earlier in this series. Adding insult to injury, someone in the stands yelled "Pay attention!"
Here's a fun Q&A with Joba Chamberlain.

YANKEES FIRE GIRARDI

I'm a die hard Yankee fan but this team really stinks. I hear the excuses and the promises of change yet this is the same team that finished the season getting stomped by the Indians. Am I the only fan that is tired of seeing a 209 million dollar team play under .500. Come on! I don't want to hear about being patient with this team. Think about it, they are paying Giambi 23 million dollars to bat under .190!!! A-Rod is getting 25 mil to watch from the dugout. Don't get me started on the most overrated player in the history of baseball, Abreu. I'm tired of this team and the promises of this "teams" management.

I'm with you jenexgod the faster they dump Giambi the better. The guy can't field and is not even batting his weight. The Yankees are not going to resign this guy so unload him. Another Carl Pavano-like player. As for Kennedy it sure does appear that Cashman made a huge mistake holding on to him and Hughes and not trading for Santana. This team is better at this point than it was last year. There are some needed changes though. Lets get Joba in the starting rotation. There is no sense of letting him pitch one inning every 5th day. He just as well throw 7 every 5th day. Kennedy could be good in the future. I hope there will come a day when the Yankee fans are glad he was not traded for Santana, but that day will not be this year. He needs to spend the summer in the minors. There are no pitching options out there, Joba to the starting rotation seems like the best direction in my opinion. And please, do not say Wells or Clemens are better options at this point and time. I would rather have watched Joba pitch 7 innings today and hope the bullpen could get the ball to Rivera than to watch this knowing that Joba nor Rivera will be throwing.

I got to disagree with you about this team's inability to beat the weaker teams. They did sweep Seattle, took 2 of 3 from Chicago, 2 of 3 from Toronto, actually swept Tampa back in April, split with Cleveland in the first series the two teams played each other, and split the first series with Tampa. So they can beat the weaker teams, and be competitive with the better teams in the AL. This team is just playing like crap, and can't do it on a consistent basis.
Another thing, what are you going to say if the Yanks fire Girardi, and replace him with Pena or someone else, and things just get worse?

Again, it's not realistic to think this team will fire Girardi while they are around the .500 mark and are going still within reasonable range of the divisional leaders. Also respect is one thing, results are another. This team isn't going to pull the trigger on Girardi with the risk of things getting worse.
Just for the record, the Yanks scored only 11 runs on Jackson in 3 starts. Except for 2 starts this season, Jackson is shutting teams down.

Bpark, I would love to go and check your posts when we were selecting a new skipper. I remember that I was only 1 of maybe 3 people who were NOT in favor of Girardi, and even I supported the decision when it was made. I don't remember exactly, but I could swear that you liked the idea of Girardi back then. Right now none of that really matters. Right now, WE ARE ALL RIGHT. Girardi is making terrible decisions, the lineup can't hit, and Hughes and Kennedy (so far) have been a total bust. I feel that Hughes is big league ready, and I think that Kennedy is too. Putting him in this game was a huge mistake, as I have been saying since early this morning.
Report any abuse or spam
That's not so true. If anyone hit a three run home run in the ninth and we tied the game or won it or whatever, people would be calling Girardi a genious for that "closed door" meeting yesterday. Because no one hits, *all* the blame goes to him. If the Yankees were winning no one would care about Girardi not sending the runner here, or not having a hitter swing there...If the Yankees get going and start hitting when it's needed, Girardi would look like a pretty cool manager. He could only instruct the players and coach them...he's not on the field with them. He's just as pissed off as all of us. The only difference is we're not being blamed for the way this team is playing.

Listen up, Fellow bloggers -
I expected the young pitchers on this team to have rocky years. I think that none of us were blind or stupid enough to expect them to win 20 games each. The caveat to them being able to learn by doing was that we all expected them to get run support. Right now we can't expect these youngsters to come out against a division leader's staff ace when we (Girardi) knows we cannot score to support him. To me, it's almost as if he waved the white flag and fed the poor kid to the sharks. Say what you want, but we do not need IPK, or Hughes for that matter, to contend for a Cy Young. We need them to get innings. While this is happening, we need this offense (that was projected to score 1000 runs) to give them room for error. Are we all on the same page as far as what I am posting goes? What we need to get EVERYTHING to start clicking is this team to start scoring runs like they can.

Does Girardi have his fair share of mistakes? Sure.
Do we all? Yeah.
Did the season just start a month ago? Yeah.
Should this team start hitting? Hell yeah.
I say wait until all-star break. If the team has a losing record then, you know it’s the manager’s fault. Because the past ten years under a different manager and almost all the same players…we’ve been winning by the break. If Girardi and this team doesn’t shape up until the break…then hell, I’ll volunteer to clean out the guys office myself. I think that they will though. There’s been injuries, it’s been tough but it isn’t an interesting baseball season if there aren’t obstacles to overcome. And the past ten years we’ve been overcoming. Not overcoming all the way until the world series, but we’ve been managing just fine. Just wait for the record to rise…it always does.

It's Girardi's fault, because Cano keeps swinging at the first thing he sees? It's his fault that Giambi ain't hitting jack? It's his fault that he has no-talents like Betamit taking up space on the roster for no reason? It's his fault that injuries keep hitting this team? It's his fault this team is two starters short of a full rotation? I don't think so!!

Okay fine, so the Yankees are insane. If you ask me 26 world series titles is pretty insane. I’m not rooting for the same crap beginning, comeback ending at all. I’m just saying that this what the team did last year. No one expects to start playing the game at 100% intensity in April. Things get started in April. When you start up the engine of a car you don’t expect it to speed off right away (unless it’s a sports car). Guys figure out stuff in spring training and some actually continue learning things in April. Still having spring training in mid May is ridiculous but the Yankees will bounce back. Eventually Arod will come back and Jorge…All I’m saying is that the Yankees didn’t start off great. None of us can change that…but there is about 5 months left of baseball. A lot could happen in five months. My mom gets a new botox every five months. My little brother grows two inches over five months…The Yankees can score some runs and build up a record in five months. If they start playing intense baseball now I have no problem with that.

So, please give an example of disrespect or something Girardi has done wrong. He doesn't pitch, he doesn't hit, he doesn't field. You state that Torre is the best manager in your opinion. New York Yankees. Their greater need is pitching, and a trade of Hideki Matsui or Johnny Damon would be necessary to clear left for Holliday. The Yankees, though, have payroll flexibility; more than $80M in salaries is coming off their books at the end of the season.

The Yankees are facing young, maturing pitching staffs...from the Indians to the Rays...no doubt, that their bats are cold now but you can not blame that On Joe Girardi, the batting coach, or any one else...We are simply seeing postion players "aging" in front of our eyes...same as old, star studded team like San Antonio trying to fend off the young, energetic, and talented New Orleans Hornets...How can anyone have thought that Hughes and Kennedy with less than 2 years in the minors, would be able to dominate in the "Show" ! Betamit is not the problem...hes only 26....the problem is your aging stars...The good news is that our bull pen has been stellar and has proven that they can keep us in the game from the 6th to 9th inning. Girardi's only mistake was not letting the absurdly overrated/cocky Kennedy stay in the minors. Kennedy is not ready to compete at this level...neither is a healthy Phil Hughes. Girardi should have stayed with the original plan of starting Igawa...this is how you ruin a pitchers confidence. The Yankees best bet is to give Steve White, and Dan McCutcheon a chance, while its still early, to see if they can fill that 5th starter roll. Also need to return Shelly Duncan to AAA...Shelly tries to pull every pitch...and is over matched by any pitcher with a good fast ball...Release Ensberg...another below average bat. Betemit and Gonzalez can fill in adequately.

I agree with alot of what you said Key in terms of what to do. Yes, get cocky overconfident Kennadia and Duncan back to the minors, cut Ensberg and get a real first baseman to split time with G. Steven White is up, good luck.

Tony Pena will only lead this team down the toilet, glad to hear Girardi sin't going anywhere. Torre was successful for other reasons other than getting the respect of his players. Having the resources of the Yankees helps. No talent players like Betafart are the problem, all they do is take up roster space unneccesarily while real talent is being wasted unnecessarily. The problem isn't that we can't beat the weaker teams, this team has proven without doubt that it can while at the same time be competitive with the better teams, it's that this team isn't consistent at all.
Replacing two young pitchers with almost no ML experience with two more young pitchers who have no experience at all isn't the answer either. It's obvious to anyone with half a brain that Hughes and Kennedy are ready to pitch at this level. Pena is crap, yanks don't need him period!!

The real solution is that change needs to be made at the top. I'm getting sick of seeing this team get bogged down by mediocre talent who have no business playing on this team like Betafart. A new direction definitely needs to be taken.

OBSports girl, other teams in this division are like Lamborghinis and we ( the Yankees ) are a Dodge Ram.
Off to New York now to see if we can rebound against... Johan Santana. Good luck getting a hit, lineup. I say the Yanks do a full awing lineup trade with the Yanks on July, that way we'll have te money to BUY thebest pitchers in the game, never trading for them.
I was never sold on Girardi in the off-season, and I was right. As a manager, he sucks. He's a guy who should be analyzing the game, in fact, when he gets interviewed and gives answers, he sounds like he's still back up in the booth. He's talking about what we needed to do, and not concentrating on putting it in play ( the managers job...? ).
Insulting Torre like that proves the Yanks right, and I'm sure he's thanking God he's not here anymore; Having to deal with a whole team ( THIS team ) and Hankbrenner, while he flicks the channels on the tube.
In fact, I became a Dodger fan just because Torre accepeted their managerial job. I'm proud to be a Yankees fan ( and aspire to play there one day ) but... it's a little ambarassing to be a Yankee fan right now.
Matt Holliday would be a great boost to this club, but I wish Cashman good luck on trying to move one of Matsui or Damon. Damon is and aged, washed up dream of what he used to be, while Matsui is needs to prove to his knees he can still stand nin left field. While his bat may be appealing, I think GMs ( smart ones ) would give their young stud prospects a chance to deem themselves useful major leaguers than clog the outfield spot with a two-tool veteran ( big bat, big contract. ). Good luck Cash. Thank George, for clogging our lineups with veterans in their primes in 05, 06 and 07, while they rot now in 08. We 've struggled to score past three.
I think I'll laugh when we do that.
I'm also laughing at the people who actually think that this club will " magicly" turn it around, you know, since there's five months left. Time flies geezers! The situation with Yanks right now is kind of like one Yankee great once put it-
" It's gettin' late early out thea."

bpark, honestly, are you a moron? I read this BLOG everyday and have since last year and I swear, I try to keep quiet, unfortunately you're ridiculous comments have pulled me into this conversation... I really don't know how stupid someone can be who keeps up with this BLOG, yet you have no knowledge of baseball... Searching "stats" into Google doesn't make you a baseball connoisseur, and it shows. There is still no reason to hire Clemens or Wells (I'm not sure if you realized how stupid those comments were yet), and firing Girardi is equally as dumb of an idea. A team who is getting paid 200+ million dollars a year filled with veterans don't need a new skipper to take over mid-season. If Girardi was making bad calls leading the team all season I'd think differently; the fact of the matter is the players aren't doing anything. Theres no reason this lineup should seem so lifeless, I watch the game and feel like I'm watching golf...

" It's gettin' late, early out thea."
Yogi Berra.
I agree wuth everyine who says that this club needs a different direction. It's time to rebuild, the Yankee way. What do I mean? It'll take the Yankees less than a year to rebuild, with all of their money. Keep Hughes, drop Kennedy. huGHES WANTS THE PRESSURE, ACKNOWLEDGES THE PRESSURE AND SHOWS HE CAN PLAY IN PRESSURE, where as Kennedy even said he can't deal with the pressure. Plus Hughes has the better stuff.
NEXT MOVE:
Move Joba to the rotation, as soon as possible. Stretch his workload out there in the minro leagues and bring him bac up in two weeks. In the meantime, bring a stop-gap up from the minors, like White, McCutcheon or Igawa.
Next Move:
Rid the club of dead wood like Giambi and Damon. Leave Matsui in permanent DH duties and try and acquire a good Leftfielder ( Holliday for example ).
Next Move:
Cut Ensberg, make Gonzalez primary utility man.
Next move:
OH MY GOD CUT BETEMIT! Sign a better backup.
Next Move:
Well now I'm just getting lost. You guys get the message. This club's roster is full of has beens and useless players.

We obviously have to disregard this season completely in order to rebuild, but better soon than never.

Guys (and dolls), I've found with the BPark filter ON the blogs read much nicer.
Now on to the topic at hand. Yep. As I suspected yesterday. Kennedy was NOT ready to come back as we saw MOTS from him. We have to face the reality that he needs to spend more time in the minors. I mean come ON! Why can't this team ACCEPT it. He's had essentially NO time to mature as a pitcher as his MiL experience consisted of what? 3 starts? Not EVERYONE is Joba. Not EVERYONE can handle it nor does everyone handle it in the same way. Give the kid time. Let him season (pardon) for a year. We have options on the farm. PLENTY of them (and no IGAWA isn't one of them.)
But the fact still remains, it makes absoultely NO difference who pitches. It makes not one WIT of difference if our rotation and pen gives up 1 run or 10 when we can't even score 1 or 3 ourselves. Wins will continue to be the exception, not the rule and no amount of adding ARod or Jorge back to the lineup will change that.
