Yankees have a closed-door meeting
The Yankees have had their first regular season, closed-door meeting of the Joe Girardi era, getting underway at about 4:55 p.m. ET on Wednesday and continuing until the team hit the field for BP at 5:30.
Girardi said that the meeting had nothing to do with Hank Steinbrenner's comments and that he wanted to speak to the team "from my own heart." Though Girardi didn't divulge many details, the easiest message to point to is this one -- "I expect us to be a lot better and we'll find a way."
There's a little bit of a lineup shakeup to get things going, with Bobby Abreu hitting second and Derek Jeter dropping to third. That breaks up the lefties a little bit more. Jeter, by the way, wasn't surprised by Steinbrenner's commentary. To him, it sounded a whole lot like the old Boss.
"We need to win more," Jeter said. "That's a good way to put it."

Why not leave Jeter in his spot and move Abreu to cleanup, Giambi to 3 and put a righty at 4.
Report any abuse or spam
This is hilarious. I moved Jeter to the 3 hole and Abreu to the 2 on my video game (MLB 08: The Show) just last week. It has worked awesome! I have improved my August lead on the Red Sox to 32.5 games! Glad to see that Girardi is almost as smart as me!

Girardi an have all the meetings he wants, he can have one ever day before and after games, he needs to win games and win now with Boston struggling.

Jeter should not be moved from the 2 hole. All you gotta do is throw a right hander in at 4. I think Giambi was better at 3 before Arod came in.

Giambi in the 3? Um....no. We need a hitter in that spot, not a slugger. If you ask me, I say we go like this:
Damon
Abreu
Jeter
Matsui
Cabrera
Giambi
Ensburg/Gonzo
Cano
Moeller/Molina
At least then we aren't stacking lefties too bad, and we have the pop at the top.

WTF!? Have some of you gone copletely insane? Take a chill pill and come back to earth, let the swelling in your cranium ease. Fire Girardi? This is exactly what I wanted Girardi to do about two weeks ago, he got the message a little late but not too late. I think that he's really turned a corner here by mustering up the balls to call a meeting. Hopefully that translates into letting his natural coaching ability settle into games now, with more situational hitting and thus more action. We may not see it all in one but at least in spurts. If not, than I think he needs to sit down by himself and really take over. I agree with some who say that he may be holding his tongue because of his respect for the players he competed with, but he's manager now, and I think even the veterans get that message, The wrong thing would be to continue what he's doing now, NOT saying a word to them, because that's when a player would really lose respect for you. Us players expect you to manage, when you don't, we don't really know what the hell you're there for, and lose respect.

We have less hits than innings played -- at least for now -- and we've scored one run. We're winning because Mighty Moose is on the mound and pitching well, if not, we'd be losing.
BPark, what's Girardi got to do with the lack of offense? Even if it was Pena out there, what difference would it make if these guys don't change hteir approaches at the plate? FIRE everyone in that case.

I think your right if they bring someone in from the outside but Pena has been there and he is one of Torre's guys, so I don't see the same issues, if anything he will get more respect without having to command it from his veteran players. bpark you may be the most impatient fan ever, and showing signs of a fair weather fan. You have no clue what goes on in the locker room, and Torre had a horrific start last year. Old Joe had a habit of killing arms especially in the bullpen and people were calling for his job because of it. I'm disappointed in the Yankees start and I think thats what that poll says rather than blaming Girardi because like I said he's not swinging the bats ot playing the field. Joe is doing a decent job this team has to figure out how to get runs in. Also there is no reason anyone should be worried about the mosse right now, he's 4-0 in his last 4 starts and is tied for 2nd in the AL in wins with 5. He's been doing exactly what we needed him to do and exceeded anybody's expectations.

Torre didn't do so hot the first half of last season either I believe we were something like 14.5 games back. Tampa is proving to be a good team they have the 4th lowest team ERA in the AL. I have confidence in the team we're too good to stay cold for long, and signs like Cano going 3/3 so far are signs proving my point. If you're using what Jeter calls the manager as a respect barometer than you're just desperate for reasons to fire Girardi and getting ridiculous. I'm just glad you're not pulling the strings with this team, but I see there's no way for you to realize so I'm not going to waste my time trying to.

The reasons for firing Girardi are simple:
Low offensive output
Record
Lack of experience managing veteran players
Letting Moose pitch to Manny 3 times with 1st base open (3 HRs or 2 HRs and a double)
Leaving Moose in too long
Lack of late inning adjustments
List goes on

This team doesn't need Pedro Martinez or any other old player who is injury-prone that type of player is completely worthless, and a waste of time, Martinez is probably one or two more stints on the DL from retiring. There's no guarantee that Tony Pena can lead this team anywhere either. I doubt even Torre could motivate this team. All Torre would do is blindly stick with the same old vets, blindly giving them his confidence while they lead this team down the toilet. That's why this team got rid of Torre in the first place, it doesn't need a manager who will do that. It needs a manager with a different approach and start dumping the worthless vets and no-talent players like Betapuke. The days of relying on broken down vets are over!! If anything this organization needs to change its philosophy, and some key personnel if it is going to change personnel on the field.

Bpark, you cannot know for certain that Pena will acheive anything. As for Girardi not being a motivator, unless you are part of the clubhouse I don't see how you can say that.
Torre failed 7 years in a row with exceptionally talented teams. Sure, the dyansy of the late 90s was about as great as it gets, but that was long ago. Torre was making poor decisions the last few seasons, most notably with regards to use of his pen.
Girardi should be allowed to see out this season at least. I don't know the last time a team won the World Series after a midseason firing, but I doubt it's happened in a while. We chose to take a more patient approach this season, lets not back down on that now.
Besides, we are 3.5 games back. Hardly time for desperate action. And firing our manager midseason is about as desperate as things get.

Ok all you Moose naysayers out there. Where are you? While I was disappointed at his inauspicious start, he in fact HAS shown that he CAN still pitch at the ML level, something I was MORE than willing to give him the opportunity to do. Who knows? Maybe he DID pick up some film of Moyer to watch on those long nights in the hotel room? Let's face it. He's 6-3 right now with a sub-4 era and pitching as much like an ace on a team (Wang excluded) as we have. 6 1/3 innings of 5 hit, 1 run ball. I've said it all season, as long as that is what you exepct from him, you should win his starts. He's giving us everything we could possibly ask from a number 4-5 pitcher and he's doing it in the 2-hole right now. Still, I stand by my comments from yesterday. We STINK offensively. STINK STANK STUNK.
4 runs in 29 innings? Really? 4 whole runs? Imagine this lineup with last year's rotation and pen? We'd have been 35 games under .500. And 2 of those 4 runs have come from "Let's trade him to San Diego" Matsui, the best hitter we have on the club right now.

I'm a little bit leery of bringing Kennedy back after only 2 starts at SWB. Yes, he has now shown himself that he CAN pitch and dominate. Maybe that was all he needed? To show himself that he does have the bag of tricks and tools necessary? I don't know. I'm not a sports psychologist. We'll know soon enough, thats for sure. But then you're putting him up against Kazmir? We'll see.......

I am glad to see that we (for the most part) can see the forest for the trees. We may of won yesterday's ballgame, but 2 lousy runs against a dude that is 0-5 with an ERA over 7.00 carreer against us? This offense is terrible. What do you think Scott Kazmir is going to do against us? We can't hit a sub-par lefty to save our butts, let alone an ace level talent like this fire-baller. Good thing that IPK comes out of the frying pan and into the fryer. Welcome back, IPK, you face one of the best left handers in the big leagues tonight! By the way, Kennedy, you had better have no hit stuff in this game, because if you think that you are going to get run support from your lineup; you are higher than the balls on a giraffe. All of you Kennedy haters had better save your criticism for a test that is a little more fair than this. We certainly should not expect too much under these circumstances. That said, NOW would be a good time for our lineup to wake the hell up. If we can get Kazmir tonight, I think that this will be a tremendous confidence boost, and a shift in our momentum. We'll see if our Yankees are up to the challenge. GO OFFENSE! GO KENNEDY! GO YANKEES!!!!!

You would think that after Tampa Bay celebrated the win they got a day before yesterday like they won game 7 of the World Series, that the Yankees would have come out with a chip on their shoulder. Obviously, Moose and a select few members of the lineup didn't like having spit on their face, the others were OK with it. We should have killed The Rays last night. Instead the offense, for the most part, phoned it in while Moose pitched his guts out. Nice to see that "Yankee Pride" is alive and well. What's next? Allowing teams to plunk Jeter & A-Rod and not do anything about it? My bad, we already do that.

What are you talking about? When has ANY team EVER plunked Jeter or Arod? Well, not counting the Red Sox, the Orioles, the Angels, the Blue Jays, the White Sox, and not counting the last 4 years. I mean besides that no one's hit Jeter or Arod.

It's ridiculous to fire Girardi when this team is still around the .500 mark and only 4 games out. No other team would think to do that. IF Girardi were as bad as some say this team would be worse off than it is now. It seems to me this exact same team started out the exactly the same way last season with Torre at the helm, and look how long it took him to turn things around. Joe "The Great Motivator" Torre couldn't turn things around without making changes, Girardi will have to do the same to get this team going. Firing Girardi, and replacing him with Pena guarantees nothing, in fact things could get worse. Lets not start panicking right now, and calling for Girardi's firing a little over a month into the season, that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Instead, lets call for bpoop's firing, along with his alter ego kewswahili.

If confidence was Kennedy's problem why throw him against one of the best pitchers in baseball and one of the hottest teams in baseball? If he wins or pitches well it'll definitely be a boost, but he could easily pitch at home against one of the Mets struggling pitchers and an offense that is about as inconsistent as ours. I hope Kennedy can pitch well because I believe he has big league stuff but not a big league attitude and you can't get that attitude in Scranton. He's proven time in and time out that he can own AAA hitters, but he needs to do it in the bigs. I don't need to see him throw 7.1 no hit ball up here (though it would be nice) I just need to see him attack the strike zone like Moose has been doing, and trust his fielders behind him to make plays on the balls that are inevitably going to be hit. Like I always said his problems aren't going to be solved in the minors, they'll be solved in the big leagues. Also his comment about the scope and magnitude of pitching in the big leagues and in New York, while not a good idea to voice that concern he's not the only one that's had it. If he can't handle the spotlight we have to move him and get talent for him before everybody gives up on him around the league. If he can't pitch in the big market (wouldn't be the first) we need to move him and get a youngster that can. But I do believe he will turn it around, but I'm not expecting a miracle at 4:10 this afternoon either.

Fire Girardi? LMAO!!!! Thank God he is no Torre!!! This team is near the .500 mark, and someone is already calling for his firing!!! At Least Girardi won't put blind faith and trust in vets who can't get the job done like Torre did.I'm all for giving Girardi time to get this team turned around.
Still not sold on Mussina at all. He's nothing more than a 5 or 6 inning pitcher. If anything he has to be protected more than the younger pitchers and have his innings limited. a vet like that doesn't build up my confidence at all.
Report any abuse or spam
Great, Rocketman, don't put any faith in a pitching staff which is the only reason why we are even close to .500 right now.
"He's nothing more than a 5 or 6 inning pitcher."
Dude, what more do you want from a 40 year old? 5 innings gets a pitcher a decision, and 6 innings and 3 runs or less gets you a quality start. If we can get 5 innings out of him every night we'll get 150+ innings out of him this season. Maybe shift your criticism to where it may do some good. Namely, this horrible offense.
Report any abuse or spam
It's pitchers like Mussina who cause more problems because they can't go deep into games burning out the pen, and this pen is overworked as it is, Mussina doesn't help. In addition Kennedy and Hughes couldn't go deep into games, and it will remain questionable that they can until they actually do it, so right there that's 60% of the staff. Rasner has pitched well since coming up, but he is a total unknown as he has never pitched anything close to a full season of baseball. I have blamed the offense on other blogs but the pitching has had more than their fair share of problems as well. This pen will be lucky to last through the 2nd half of the season if it continues to be used like it is.
Report any abuse or spam
The pen isn't being used any more than any other pen. What stats are you reading? We have starter after starter going into the 6th and 7th innings. This pen is getting a perfect amount of work. Not too much and not too litte. Do you want a CG SO every time a Yankee starter takes the bump? Ain't gonna happen, Rocketman!
Report any abuse or spam
The problem isn't that we're burning out pen out on Moose, it's that the other pitcher (again Wang excluded) aren't going deep. As I said, we KNOW what to expect of Moose, 5+ to 6 something innings of 3-4 run ball. With those stats, we should win a decent majority of his starts.
Report any abuse or spam
Did I say I wanted a complete game every time or that Mussina was the only one not going deep? NO!! JEEEZE!! You guys really need to work on your reading comprehension. I said 60% of the staff can't do go deep, including Mussina. What stats are you looking at chaz? The pen is 2nd in the AL in IP. Perfect amount of work? ARe you kidding? If this team had a perfect amount of innings of work it would be down in the middle of the pack not at the top.

And, WOW, the Brewers sign Braun for 8 years! The dollar and length of contract trend is outrageous!

chaz,
Light him up with what? A can of gasoline, and matches?

I was hoping a homerun or 2, but whatever gets him out of the game.

Pedro Martinez is just an example of Steinbrenner ways, especially if his voice of reason is gone.
Joe Torre's 11 years with these players hardly compares to his 1/4 season with a team that hasn't made the playoffs since its hero Kurt Cobain died.

FIRE GIRARDI

Torre has nothing to prove to anyone, and was part of one of the greatest dynasties in Yankee history. He should be immortalized for his success with this club. FIRE GIRARDI if he doesn't improve this team. He deserves a little time to prove that he was the right choice. That closed door meeting was a step in the right direction. We'll see.

Wow, Bryan Hoch's blog is on FIRE! You can't blame Girardi. These aren't his players. He didn't go out and get Igawa. He didn't get A-Rod and Posada hurt. This is his first year and the Yankees are far from out of it.

Joe Who?? I don't see any difference. Neither did or is now getting this team fired up. We're only slightly better than last year and our concerns are still with pitching. Wang has proven to be our ace, but the biggest surprise has been Moose, Now we need Andy, Ras, & Ian to get us moving. Our hitless wonders are still floundering at the plate, We were very lucky to escape with a 2-1 win, 4 runs in 3 games will not cut it. Ian is going today, we need a strong performance from him as well as an awaking of our bats. It was good to see Cano having a good game having 4 of 7 hits, We can't win anything that way. We need a team effort.
Thank goodness for our 2 out hitting last night, that was a pleasant surprise. Let's hope Girardi's pep talks wake our guys up.....

A good assessment, FJR.

FJR, If "slightly better" means 5 more wins, I think we can win the East. I hope we do, because I can't see the wild card coming out of this division. We are going to kill each other all year.

Chaz,
Last year we were in 4th place, 10.5 games behind the Bosox
with a record of 18-23. So we're 2 games ahead of 2007 18-23 and now only 3 games behind Boston. So you are right we are better than just slightly ahead. And you know with better hitting we could be right on top. This is as you said, the toughest of all divisions!
Fire Girardi?, Are you kidding, he's only getting his feet wet, Give him a chance to prove what he can do. One thing he can't do is pitch and hit, But once this team warms up watch out! Tonight is a good time to start, Kasmir is still trying to get in shape after DLing. It's a good time to get hot. We can't wait for Arod or Jorge we need to start now

I say we give Girardi enough time to get control of this team. How long that is is not for me to decide. But he sure as hell better make it quick. He is really nothing more than Joe Torre with less experience, and less abillity to manage egos, so far.

Well here we go, let's see how Kennedy deals with giving up a lead off homer. It wasn't a horrible pitch, he got it inside but it was definitely too for up and Iwamora drive it. He settled down to retire the next three but the rate the bats are going this game might be over. Wake up bats and get some runs in.

Considering the time we have been having against mediocre pitchers, Kazmir might just no-hit us.

He just might......thru 3: no runs, no hits, no errors

LOL. Bases Jacked and no one out. Never saw this coming....

Pretty impressed IF IPK can work out of this jam allowing only 1 run.

I'm fairly impressed as well he's hitting 89 on the gun throwing a god number of strikes, but this inning only happened because of a hit batsman and a walk. He needs to limit those mistakes and the offense has to wake the hell up please. Kazmir is not throwing great so we need to take advantage.

No, no-no for Kazmir thankfully lets build.

This lineup that Girardi is using is the worst one possible. Abreu and Matsui out of the lineup? What is he thinking?

Now we need to generate some runs. Come on Jeter. Move Cabrera to second.

Allright, now we need a base hit from Giambi. Or a walk. Or anything.

With our offense slumping, I hope Girardi will call for small ball and not a big 2 run homer.

Smart idea, taking the only two .300 hitters out of the lineup at the same time. What an idiot.

Congrats on coming back, Ian. We'll see you in AAA. If we don't see you on the trade block first. Good decision on Girardi's part to bring this kid back on a game game against the hottest team in the AL, and against one of the best pitchers in the bigs. So much for baby steps! What a dunce!

I hope Girardi is smart enough to ease Hughes back in similar fashion. That way, we ruin 2 young pitchers this year.
