Subway Series musings
I'm in a bit of a blog-updating slump lately. Maybe I should stop by the Big G's locker later.
Hello again everyone from Yankee Stadium, where Andy Pettitte and Johan Santana are facing off on an absolutely gorgeous afternoon. It's hard to believe this is even the same universe we all trudged through yesterday ... tough break for Darrell Rasner, who goes from the spotlight to a warm seat out in the bullpen and a "wait 'til Wednesday."
But it is Mets vs. Yankees, and what would that be without Derek Jeter hitting one out of the yard? Jeter has killed the Mets over the years, hitting .381 with 11 home runs entering today's game -- and that doesn't even include the shot he hit in the World Series eight years ago, leading off the evening at Shea Stadium, a crushing blow after the Mets had taken Game 3.
That all seems a long, long way away today, as the Mets wage their internal clubhouse battles and the Yankees try to claw out of last place in the AL East. While I'm musing about 2000, here's a couple of random thoughts ... there are no Mets players or coaches remaining from the 2000 World Series team, and four Yankees players (Jeter, Jorge Posada, Pettitte and Mariano Rivera).
Also this -- when Mike Piazza was hit in the head by Roger Clemens in July 2000, he missed the All-Star Game with a concussion. His replacement on the NL squad? Joe Girardi.

Bases loaded, with one out... can Pettitte get out of this without any trouble? Lets hope so...

Walk in th tying run. How many base on balls has this pitching staff given up this year? Walks are as good as a hit, especially with the bases loaded. Now down 3-2 against Santana. This offense needs to hit. Is anyone has tired as I am of Giambi?

A one, two, three inning for Santana.

Now in the 7th and the Yankees bring in FarnsworthLESS, another free agent BAD signing by Brian Cashman. Reyes' homer makes it 4-2 with Santana showing why Cashman was WRONG again. Hank and Hal if you do one thing this year get rid of Cashman. He put this stink team together and he ought to be the one held responsible for this CRAP. Stick ought to be the GM he seems to be the only one that knows what baseball talent is.

WOW! It's been a long time without a negative on Farnsworth! Knew it couldn't last!

Now a Wright home run making it 6-2. Way to go Kyle another great outing by this WORTHLESS ex-Cub. Great signing Brian. How many more free agent pitching successes you going to ink? As much as Yankee fans are frustrated it's time to look at the real problem this team has, a BAD GM who is CLUELESS when it comes to evaluating talent.

What is there to say positive about FarnsworthLESS? The guy has been a joke his entire career.

Girardi is done.
Report any abuse or spam
bpark Girardi did NOT put this team together, Cashman did. Today's game changed when once again FarnsworthLESS comes in against a quality opponent and gets shelled. Girardi can only play the cards that the Yankees have given him and frankly those cards are rotten.

It doesn't matter who put this team together, its a playoff team and they are not playing that way. That is Girardi's former job.

Duncan should be released, he can't hit in clutch situation and we don't need him in Scranton, we need hitters here.

When Duncan and Ensberg are your pinch hitters, thats almost as bad as having Will Nieves. We need to make a few moves.

Girardi is a terrible manager, he had success with those he could mentor. He is STILL not the right man for this job.

Give me a break bpark, look at the 9th inning today. First two guys get on and you have Melky, Duncan and Ensberg to follow. Duncan and Ensberg pitch hit. This team is injured offensively. Girardi is NOT a miracle worker. This team is loaded with busted free agents who were selected long before Girardi becmae manager. The Yankees need to dump Cashman who has proven himself to be as worthless as his free agents. Get a person who has played baseball to be your GM. By the way I have been watching the Rays-Cards game. They Rays were down 8-4 and have come back to tie 8-8. the comeback was led by a three run shot by Carlos Pena. You remember him bpark another guy that Cashman let go. Andy gets the loss today but it should go to FarnsworthLESS, another great Cashman signee.

bpark, shut up man... Everyone here is tired of you, you have no sense of baseball, whatsoever. I really don't understand how you can be anything more than 13-year-old kid whose power hungry for a world series win. Joe Girardi is a manger of the NEW YORK Yankees, New York in CAPS because New York gets the most media coverage of any city. The mets are a good team, the Yankees are a good team as well; albeit neither of them are playing up to their true potential. You're stupid for thinking Girardi needs to be fired, because if that was the case Torre should of been long gone in April of last year.
Let's compare last year to this year, shall we? Last year A-Rod kept the Yankees a float and Torre's decisions blew the game for the Yanks on several occasions, yet this is nothing like Girardi and this years Yankees where no one can produce at all.
To sum it all up, bpark, you're an imbecile; all your baseball "knowledge" is flawed.

Actually, I sort of think that Girardi's managing has kept the Yanks afloat so far. His usage of the bullpen is WAY BETTER than "Old Joe" and besides the Manny fiasco, I can't really think of a time where he blew the game. His done a really good job with this club. I think the real problem is the Yankees are showing their real colors. They just aren't that great of a team right now. Pettitte has shown to be an aging pitcher so far (although today wasn't HORRIBLE), the kids have been...well...kids. Giambi is no longer even a mediocre player. Duncan seems like the league has caught up to him. Damon, Abreu, and Matsui are certainly beyond their "better years." Think about it. It's taken miraculous seasons thus far by Wang, Moose, Mo to keep the Yankees here. AND, as I've brought up already, Arod isn't going to be 100% when he comes back so we can't expect last year's output (which was basically the ONLY reason the Yanks made it to the playoffs). The Yankees are by no means done, but it's going to take a bunch for them to climb out of this whole. If Girardi does it, I feel it would be MORE impressive than anything Torre did in the regular season.

Let's go Yankees! Listen, we lost out there, but that game was actually... exciting! The Yankees' offense has taken a turn for better here, and Cashman needs to be fired. Whoah, out of Leftfield there huh? Farnsworth was successful in the NL because he pitched in pitchers parks, but he's always given up the long ball, 95 mph heater and darting slider and all. Now in a hitter's ballpark, that weakness has been exploited. Ensberg and Duncan are not pinch hitters... we need some role-players on thisclub, Obviously we're not prepared to be a playoff team and we have glaring weaknesses.
We need, from my point of view, a solid pnc-hitter, a la NL.
Two more solid starting pitchers. We don't have that right now. Beyond Wang, we have question marks ( though Mussina has honed his craft and reinvented himself as a pitcher. He could be a surprise this year. ) Pettitte, I don't know, all I can say about Pet is that hes had bad luck. The Yanks have crapped on themselves when he's on the mound.
Need I mention middle relief again?
Hawkins? Haven't seen him in like... forever. Thank you Cash.
Farnsworth? I love you, Cash.
Listen, the best thing for this club to turn arund is to start from the ground up. We need smart management, who knows how to spot talent. We should've nabbed Santana, instead, Cashass stayed with unproven pitchers. They're not even part of the rotation anymore.
I don't think I need to mention the other disastrous signings Cash has made.
He's killed the fundamentals of this team. He's killed the Yankees. I wouldn't be surprised if he was FIRED and Hankbrenner took over as GM.

Please BDSouth let's continue the great pitching signings by Clueless Brian. I am not a big fan of Japanese pitchers but let's see the sox get Dice K and who does Clueless sign? Right Igawawful. And let's not forget the best signing of all, Carl Pavano, the $45 million man who gave the Yankees five count them five wins in a great NY Yankee career. IF these signings were exceptions one could say well tough luck but they are not exceptions they are the rule with Clueless Brian. Management started the rebuilding process by getting rid of Torre, now continue it by getting rid of Cashman. Gene Michael is the only management guy who called for the trade with the Twins. Stick ought to be the GM, at least he has played the game and has a working knowledge of the game and what to look for in a player.

nobody killed the Yankees. They're in a major transitional period and have arguably their two most valuable players out injured.
As for Santana...well we'd be in a slightly smaller hole but we'd have Damon in CF and have nout pitching prospects

Somettime this year, Gene Michael turns 70. Do you really think at that age, he wants to be a GM? C'mon. Think.

And just what is Cashman's nine year resume?
2 Championships
4 World Series
9 Playoffs
You might argue the first two years were someone elses club, but, still a record the envy of 28 other GMs and owners. If the Yanks let him go, there will be some openings and at least two owners willing to fire a GM signed for 2009 and hire Cashman!

Candy... A-Rod and Posada should NOT be the reasons we are losing right now. If they are, this team is pathetic. Case closed. Okay, so we take a toll in run production. But are you serious? Cano, Cabrera, Damon, Giambi, Jeter, and Matsui are nobodies? Gonzalez and Moeller are no A-rod and Posada, but at the same time, we shouldn't be struggling to score more than two runs a game.
The "transitional period" thing, I don't buy; I don't see why a new manager would mark the start of a transitional period. On paper, we are an exact replica of the team we were in '07, but I doubt we can duplicate our fortunes as we did then. Okay, Hughes and Kennedy have not won one game. That's exactly why we're in this hole. If Hughes would've one four of his eight starts, and Kennedy four of his ten starts, we'd be 5 games over .500 right now, minus the games we struggled to score over a run.
I'm not saying it's ALL their fault, but they really got a jump start. So no, no transitional period, It's just that now, these veterans are starting to play according to their age, and they aren't producing at the league average level.
I agree with those of you who say this team needs to be gutted, and that management needs a whole turn over.
Keep our franchise players: Jeter, Cano, Cabrera, Mo, Wang, Ohlendorf, Joba, Hughes, Ramirez, Posada, Abreu and A-Rod, Bruney and co. and ditch the dead weight. ( Matsui, Damon, Giambi, Farns, Hawkins, Duncan, Ensberg. )
How about bringing up the talent that's rotting in the minors:
Gardner, Patterson, White. We've already seen what Rasner has done.
Cut everybody else. Cashman... cut him, get someone young and smart wants a challenge, the challenge of working under Steinbrenner.

First of all passing on Santana was the right move no doubt. Before tonight's game the Mets were 20-19 just barely out of the divisional basement, and their overall record was hardly much better than the Yanks record. So he definitely hasn't made a difference for the Mets yet.
I'm all for firing Crashman, the "success" he has had while GM of the Yanks has been a direct result of what others before him have done not because of him. No one has yet to answer the question I posed in the offseason which is,what moves has Crashman made himself that have resulted in the success of this team? Answer is absolutely none. Epstein has constantly embarassed him as a GM, and outclassed him. The results in recent years speak for themselves. All Crashman has done ism ake bad mistake after bad mistake, i.e. the Betapuke trade. Anyone who knows anything about baseball knows it's a cardinal sin to trade something as a relief pitcher for a bench player. Betamit is total garbage, completely worthless, and has no talent whatsoever. This team is stuck with that garbage because no team is stupid enough to give up prospects for a no-talent. Wouldn't be surprised to see him dumped some time between now, and the start of next season, he's completely worthless. Farnsworth is nothing more than an1-inning middle reliever who can't even be used as a setup man or closer because he doesn't have the makeup for that, we saw that last season, and the Cubs fans knew that while he was with the Cubs. His mistakes go on and on, not going after decent FAs this past offseason is just his latest.
IF this team were smart it will go with trading away some decent 2nd tier prospects like Jason Jones or George Kontos, after all you can't get something for nothing. The one thing this team has a surplus on is quality pitching prospects, and they are going to have to think about trading some in the near future to make up for the fact that this team is lacking in position players especially since there are going to be holes opening up at 1B, SS, and in the outfield so it's going to need to look at getting as many position players as it can. Hording decent prospects when you have a chance to fill holes on your position is just as big a mistake as making bad trades. Thanks for putting this team in the position it's in Crashman.

Amazing the invective aimed at Wilson Betemit...as if he his the main reason that the Yankees are in last place. That was a great trade by Cashman...getting rid of a worn out, ineffective reliever like Scott Proctor for a 25 year old with thunder in his bat and can play multiple infield position was the right call. Even Before his hamstring injury (he had just hit a double over the center fielders head) his bat had come alive....can't say the same of Ensbergburg-puke or Duncan-Puke who are the epitomy of garbage and should be released immediately. Look aroung the majors...quality, off-the bench players, with good power and can play multiple positions are in very short supply. Farnsworth has been lites out until yesterday...relievers are not going to shut down major league bats every day....Papalbon lost two games this past week ! Andy Pettite pitched well...he had two punch & judy singles that started the fourth inning rally and was a pitch from leaving the bases jammed...those are the breaks.
The Yanks bats are beginning to unthaw...they are one pitcher away from completing their 5 man rotation. The answer is not Kennedy or Hughes...they need extended time in AAA to hone their skills...That 5th starter currently resides in their farm system...Steve White, McCutcheon, Cox or Remairez...they gotta give these guys a chance.
Report any abuse or spam
Hughes is the answer. None of those guys listed are viable bats off the bench.

Once again bpark's alter ego chimes in. Betapuke a great trade? LMAO!!!! Thunder in his bat? LMAO even more!! If Proctor was worn out was because Torre overused him last season and the season before, anyone who knows anything about baseball knows that. Just more proof he didn't know how to utilize his vets properly. He wasn't even close to being the worst pitcher in the pen nor the most troubled, again if you knew anything about baseball you could have seen that for yourself. The fact that Proctor turned his season around is proof of that, and his trade did nothing to help the Yanks or the pen. The pen was even a bigger mess after he left than when he was with the Yanks, as they had to fill the pen with total garbage who were unable to produce. In the end only two pitchers could be trusted in Chamberlain and Rivera, a bad sign. Betapuke has never shown he was worth the price of Proctor, no bench player is. Betapuke has never shown he is a quality hitter. His bat came alive? Again, LMAO!!! You're talking about a very small number of ABs, big freakin' deal. Only someone like yourself who knows nothing about baseball would even make a big deal of that. Prior to his "Hot streak" he showed noting but a dead bat. HE is nothing but a worthless no-talent with no ability whatsoever who will never do anything help this team to be successful as he has failed time and time again since coming to the Yanks. Unfortunately, this team is stuck with this putrid garbage since no team will give anything up for this no-talent. Nice move Crashman. My one-armed, one-legged grandmother has more talent than this piece of crappola.
Just for your information, McCutcheon most likely won't be ready to pitch for at least another year as he has no experience over AA. Cox is a setup man, always has been, always will be, so no chance of him helping out as a starter and Ramirez has been nothing more than a mediocre relief pitcher who has been cut a couple of times by the Angels and has no ability as a starter. But since you're bpark's alter ego you should know that since we've had this discussion before. If you're not bpark maybe you should learn more about baseball before you post here. Obviously you don't know the players.
FIRE TRASHMAN!!!!!!! DUMP WORTHLESS GARBAGE LIKE BETAPUKE!!!
Again, nice try bpoop we know keyswahili is you.
Report any abuse or spam
I agree, Betamit has never been worth the loss of Proctor. He has done nothing to make this a better organization, he's a worthless no-talent who should just be cut. He has never shown the ability to hit the baseball. I doubt anyone will even notice he is gone if he gets cut. I'm definitely hoping that happens, that's just one less piece of trash this team has to worry about. If we're lucky he will get run over by a bus ending his career.
