Under the lights at the Trop
To recap: Derek Jeter is back in the lineup and Joba Chamberlain has been placed on the bereavement list, having traveled home to Nebraska this morning. Chad Moeller has made his Yankees debut behind the plate with Jose Molina and Jorge Posada unable to catch, and Wilson Betemit is on the disabled list with a mysterious case of pink eye that he's had since Spring Training that no one seemed to notice and was not contagious.
Just another day covering the greatest show on dirt -- good thing I did a three-hour face plant into my mattress after checking in back in Tampa. Ah, Tampa. Hard to believe it's been just three weeks since we were all stalking around George M. Steinbrenner Field with the ever-present Mark Didtler of the Associated Press.
Apparently the Yankees are throwing out a ceremonial first pitch from space on Wednesday, and somehow that does not surprise me in the least.
Under the catwalks here at Tropicana Field, the Yankees are finally sheltered from the elements and, as Joe Girardi said, able to keep the long underwear packed away. Tomorrow is Jackie Robinson Day around the Major Leagues -- the Yankees will be represented by Joe Girardi, Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano and Mariano Rivera (of course) wearing No. 42.

Is Rivera the last active player to wear no 42???

hah Moeller hit a pitch-out. Doesn't look like the Rays' day does it

Mo's the last of the 42s, yes.

The "Captain" is back...
Top of the 4th... two-run single for Jeter...Yankees 7, Rays 1 ...Go Yankees !!!

5-1...this is going well!! Especially if Damon gets hot, he could be a real spark plug for this team.
I think it's pretty fitting that the last player to wear Jackie's number is someone of Hall of Fame calibre and such a decent character too. 7-1........500 here we come!!

Kennedy safely through 3. Yankees at last seing some run production especially with runners on base something missing in past 12 games. Now allong with three home runs, this game looking good against past Yankee nemesis.
Also hqas anyone in past Tampa Bay sledger seemingly always behind home plate. He spends entire game abusing Yankee players. he has been much more quiet today.

Hey out of the cold and the bats warm up, good to see Damon and DJ get some RBIs and Arod put another one in the seats.

If the Yankees moved to a Southern state they'd be unstoppable!! Mississipi needs a team

Bottom of the 5th...
Nice pitch by Kennedy to strikeout the first batter....then, groundout to second, for out number two of the inning...Kennedy is pitching a good game, so far !!!

end of 5...
Yankees 7, Rays 2 ....Let's hope the bullpen doesn't ruin this great start by Kennedy !!!

Jeter looks like he is running okay...It's good to see him back in the lineup !!!

It's definitly nice, and better to have Jeter in but I'll be sad to see Gonzalez go down to AAA, I like watching young players do well and he's definitly earned a roster spot. We dan dump the useless wonder Wilson Betemit, have Ensburg play the corner IF spots and Gonzalez play the middle IF spots if we need them

What a great play by third catcher in Moeller to throw out the speedy Crawford under pressure with two on and none out, bullet throw. Great yankee depth showing out.

The above by KBP should have been signed off Aussie bryan soon to be in New York.

kbp not to be a stickler but Moeller got BJ Upton, either way it was a great play and a rally killer for the Rays.

Kennedy hit in hip by batter and taken out , with Chamberlain out for 3 days, this is really testing the reserve bench, hopefully at 7-2 we can hang on. What is the situation with future games and availability and unavailability, does anyone have an answer as what options are. How long is posada, Giambi and Cano ( what is wrong with him or he has he been given a spell due to poor hitting.

Liner right off the hip... oh God does that hurt. I got one of those right off the left elbow, Couldn't hit well for the rest of the month with bursitis and aches and pains. I hope it's not that bad for Kennedy.

Taber now given up two run home run then hits batter, one on and one out, can they hang on. Pitching change it may be Farnsworth :::::

KBP, Posada is out with a "dead shoulder", which is actually a weak rotator cuff, probably caused by fatigue or a nerve problem. If it's Fatigue, he could be out another two-three games, if it's any worse, it'll be DL time. Giambi is just not having a great time with the bat, so maybe he got the day off to work on his vision, balance and mechanics ( he's been real off-balanced at the plate ) and Cano is going through the same slow start. Either way, both of these guys will benfit from a day off for mental rest and some fine-tuning-- a la Ortiz.

Sorry wholohan caused by excitement, now another tw run home run now 7-6

Seven-Six and the offense is going to have to get back on their horses. The faulty bullpen coupled by young, good contact hitting lineup, and it's bad news for the Yanks. These Rays just never settle down. That's baseball.

I looked back to my comment [during the 5th inning] at 8:49 p.m., "Let's hope the bullpen doesn't ruin this great start by Kennedy"...The Yankees were leading 7-2, then...We need Mariano to close this game out !!! ...Go Yankees, we need more runs...Top of the 8th, two on, two out, A-Rod up [he's 4-4 tonight] ...Let's Go A-Rod !!!

Yeah points for Joe G. but come one Bruney, you're such a worthless meat stick. I actually thought you were going to have a decent year, not.
Report any abuse or spam
The Great Mariano is now entering the game !!! ...He gets the final out of the 8th !!! ...on to the 9th, Yankees 8, Rays 7
Report any abuse or spam
I wouldn't count out Bruney yet. This is his first setback - if he goes another 7/8 scoreless innings instead of imploding then he could have a good year
Report any abuse or spam
Yeah, but he's burned us so many times, not as many as Kyle "I can get through an inning scoreless" Farnsworth, but I had high hopes for a Bruney turnaround this year, maybe it'll still happen.

How good, first Cano with what appeared to be his first hit for games, then Rivera, how good is he throwing this year 4 for 4. But again How good is he.

Man! Of course THIS is the game I have to miss. I've sittin' through some of the most boring, lackluster games I've seen over the last two weeks and the first one I miss is a 15-hit 8-run game. Oh wait, I didn't miss the whole thing. I happened to catch the only at bat in which Arod DIDN'T get a hit. Maybe all of you should ban me from watching for a while, heh.

Nice to see that we are looking at the same thing this year that we did last year. When we pitch we don't hit, and when we hit we don't pitch. Thanks Bruney and Traber for making a blow out into a nail biter. I guess I shouldn't complain. We did win after all.

My man Cano finally showed up. That was a moon shot to right field.

Plusses last night:
1. We won.
2. Kennedy pitched stongly and effectively into the 7th.
3. We made some strong contact off a guy who has beaten us already this season.
4. Gonzalez showed he can play 2nd effectively and while his bat was silent, he did was and scored a run thus negating any need we have to keep Bet "I can lose my job as bench-warmer"amit around.
5. DJ is back and looks strong.
6. Melky is still proving his worth as the future of our team, not trade bait.
And finally:
7. We won despite a rough outing by two pitchers who have, SO FAR this season proven effective. I'm willing to give them another chance.

PItching wasn't bad last night, two people pitched poorly but IPK proved he can pitch well against a very underrated (but beginning not to be as much) Tampa team. This shows what happens when we dont have Joba in the back end of the 'pen, if and when we move him into the rotation we need to go out and get a flame thrower to fill his spot because I dont want Farnsworthless, the improved but not reliable yet Buffet Bruney, or Hawk to pitch the eighth. Mo is Mo and will be Money, but as we saw last year if we cant get the ball to Mo he's almost worthless, which is sad.
Report any abuse or spam
Oh and now that Gonz proved he can play MI why in Earth would we keep Betemit? Ensburg can play the corners and Gonz play the middle, they both hit better and are better all around ball players.
Report any abuse or spam
Who,
Exactly. I'm not counting out Traber or Bruney just yet, either. But they certainly helped make yesterday's game stressful. Ensburg on the corners and Gonzo for the middle? Sign me up for that bandwagon. We all know that Jeter is pissed over missing 6 games. Look for him to rake all season as a result of "letting his teammates down".

Naturally, Cano hits a jack as soon as I bench him on my fantasy team. I can't catch a break this season, either (LOL).

You would think that a lineup with Joe Mauer, Albert Pujols, Derek Jeter, Robbie Cano, and Jeff Francoeur would earn me a boat load of points. But, I'm dead last in my division with an 0-2 record. I think I'll just to stick to video game baseball.

ha I lead the league with strike outs in my league thanks to Howard (17), Cano (8), Chris Young (17), and Fukudome (8), hopefully their power will make up for it.

I think the best thing about last night is that Cano got a big hit. Hopefully it carries over. He needs to kill this slump.
