Coaches' corner

Yankees camp is always special because of the way the team reaches back into its past for guest instructors. Most of you know that last season was my first covering the Yankees, and I really have to say that there's something cool about turning a corner in the clubhouse and bumping into someone like Yogi Berra. If it's neat for me, I can only imagine what that's like for a young player.

Even the coaching staff got a real kick out of having Yogi around -- Joe Torre kept a countdown to Yogi's arrival on a white-erase board in his office. Yogi's golf clubs were scheduled to land in Tampa a few days ahead of him, if I remember correctly.

In case you're curious, here's the list of guest instructors for Yankees Spring Training 2008. You'll notice that Ron Guidry is back in camp, just as he'd hoped to be, so he can continue working with some of the young pitchers like Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes. Great move for the Yankees and a classy gesture by the Gator. And guess who's the latest Hall of Famer to hit Tampa?

GUEST INSTRUCTORS: Yogi Berra (8), Hop Cassady (40), Goose Gossage (54), Ron Guidry (49), Reggie Jackson (44), Hector Lopez (11), Tino Martinez (24), Stump Merrill (22), Graig Nettles (9).

Wow. That is some list.

I hope the kids get as much out of this as possible. If we are going to do well this season, the young players will have to carry a lot of the load.

The offseason is almost over. I can't wait!

That's why the Yankees are so special !!! ...

There is no other team in Baseball that has the great Tradition that the Yankees have...

Great Players, and a long history of winning Championships!

All us Yankee fans can thank George Steinbrenner for placing such an important emphasis on "Yankee Pride" and "Yankee Tradition" from the first day he took over ownership of the team! This continues to this day, and is one of the main reasons why we are all proud to be "Yankee Fans" !!!

Best Wishes, to Manager Joe Girardi, all the players, and coaches, as they prepare to start Spring Training!

I am comletely geeked for this season! Things are settling down, I am anxious to see how Girardi does his first year at the helm. Win or Lose, it's great to be a Yankee fan right now. So many young Yankees to continue the tradition. I can't wait! I'm getting MLB Extra Innings to see all the games this year!

Bryan, first thank you for the Giants Blogs.

Now, back to the nature at hand. We are gonna have a very tough year unless we hit more than 1000 runs. Beyond Pettitte and Wang, there are huge question marks in the rotation, the bullpen is worse than last year.

So, Pavano is throwing? Trade?

Better to have question marks than sure-fire busts, right Bpark? It should be exciting either way!

I'm guessing that it’s Goose Gossage? To work with Gator, Yogi, and Goose is an opportunity most would freak out over. The lil Yanks are so lucky. I can so imagine Joba, Phil and Ian just like so struck by who’s teaching them that they won’t be able to even pitch normally. I wish I could hibernate during February and March and wake up in time for the season, believe me I could use the rest. I didn’t watch the Grammy’s (to answer the previous post) but I’m guessing by your comment Brian that Amy Winehouse won?! Trust me there is no appeal.

you mean like Bruney, Britton and Veras, Chaz?

This just in...Pettitte may have lied to congress.

Per ESPN

"ESPN sources said that Pettitte was not a good witness when he appeared before congressional lawyers during a deposition on Monday. Pettitte often contradicted himself, so the committee agreed to his request not to appear before the committee.

Lawyers familiar with the hearings would not say if Pettitte implicated Clemens as a steroids user in his testimony. However, they said that Pettitte's testimony didn't fully jibe with Clemens' versions of events."

Here are my Spring Training wishes...

My first wish is to have Goose Gossage spend some time with Brian Bruney - controlling the high rising fastball.

My second wish is to have Reggie spend some time with A-rod - What to do in order to "dial it up" in the playoffs.

Bryan, what a dream job you have. It must be great waking up every morning but not just writing about the Yankees but being right there with them.

Good to see Gator back in camp, but I'm glad Eiland is the pitching coach.

Man Bryan, I'm sitting here at my desk polishing off my second cup of coffee, looking at my weather bug that says 10 degrees and a weather report calling for 8-12" of global warming tonight and you my friend have it made! Craig Nettles was one of my idols as a kid growing up in the 70's. How I WISHED I was right handed so I could play 3b... :) I too am glad Gator's back to work as well as Reggie and Goose. Keep us posted!

Not much warmer on Capitol Hill, my friend. 21 degrees as we speak.

I was talking about the rookies, bpark, Not the Buffet Boys.

Pettite wasn't 100% forthright? WEIRD! Only not.

The report on ESPN says Pettitte contracted himself frequently. Will this warrent charges? We'll see. It could be he had trouble with dates, etc or he could have been blatently telling multiple accounts.

I guess it really doesn't matter. Pettite has been lying to everyone since day 1 anyway. "I only did it twice" falls right in line with "I did not inhale", "I thought she was 18", and "I didn't know it was loaded".

Everyone knows that you have to cycle with roids and HGH to get anything out of it. Taking it 2 times wouldn't have done jack squat to help him "heal". I'll be glad when this PED scandal is a faded memory.

Pardon me if I offended any of you Android PEDitte supporters out there. It's not every day that you find out your favorite pitcher was a cheating drug user. So much for his "relationship with God". What an a-hole.

Why the Yankees will win 100+ games in 2008.

The Yankees were the BEST team, by something like 10 games, throughout the second half of the 2007 season...this was simply b/c our team FINALLY became healthy in the 2nd half. Remmember when we had like 35 different rookies start games for us and we STILL managed to make the playoffs...no other team in the league could pull that off. The Yankees of 2008 are HEALTHY. This year our Rookies are Studs and are Studs are hungry to win immediately...these guys aren't question marks, they were all 3 dominant in 07.

Now back to the more relevant point, starting rotation:

2007:

1. Pavano

2. Pettite

3. Wang

4. Igawa

5. random rookie

6. 58 year old Roger Clemens.

2008

1. Pettite.

2. Wang

3. Mussina

4. Hughes

5. Chamberlain

6. Kennedy

The Yankees of 08 will be healthier b/c they are young, have TONS of energy, and are simply not old and injured like Clemens & Pavano. Also, removing Igawa from the equation will save us 100 innings of embarassment. The 2008 Yankees sport 5 studs in the rotation; our man Andy, Wang, Hughes, Joba, and Patrick. Mussina is STILL Moose(not a stud, but not a plough horse neither); he had a 3.5 era 2 years ago....just pitch him a little less and he'll work his magic over 150-170 innings.

Also, remove Clemens and ALL the random rookies from the equations and replace them average to above average innings and we're looking at A LOT of wins. The Yankees don't need pitchers to go 9 innings of shut out ball, we need pitchers to hold together games so our offense can go ahead and score it's consistent 5-7 runs per game.....the Yankees pound for pound have the most potent offense in the league, don't out pitch the opposition, just hold and outslug...we can do this with healthy arms, and we've got 'em.

Go Yankees!

Joba to start in the pen to begin the season as part of the strategy to limit his innings this season. I guess Mussina is locked in.

I had a feeling Joba was going to start off in the bullpen, I don't mind that move one bit. The dude needs to build up his stamina, and stamina is best built in increments.

We do not yet know how Pettitte contradicted himself but he didn't come off well.

Pettitte doesn't need to be in a court room anyway, he NEEDS to get his butt to Tampa, hello? Spring Training offically begins in a few days.

The NY Post states that the Yankees are NOT going to let Joba throw more than 30 innings more than he did last season....The thirty inning rule that I brought up last week, hmmm...I love being right!(just kidding)

According to what I am reading, Pettite didn't contradict himself as much as he threw Roidger Clemens under the bus. Nice knowing you, Rocket! Well see you in 3-5.

'Pardon me if I offended any of you Android PEDitte supporters out there. It's not every day that you find out your favorite pitcher was a cheating drug user. So much for his "relationship with God". What an a-hole.'

Chazbedlam, Christians are human too. a religious person does not mean that they've declared themselves flawless. your logic is fallacious.

When was I talking about ALL Christians? Seems like the last time I checked, I was a Christian. That said, you may call my argument fallacious all you want. The fact remains that he portrayed himself to his fans to be a wholesome, family oriented, competitor that did everything the right way; when in fact, he was just another PED user.

To add to Rick's comment, I hope Graig Nettles teaches A-Rod how to sacrifice his body to knock down balls and also how to guard the line.
