The Rocket fires back

Clemens_8Roger Clemens defended his position last night on '60 Minutes,' insisting that the reports of steroid use with former trainer Brian McNamee "never happened" and that the Mitchell Report's contents, as it pertains to him, are "hogwash."

Clemens, 45, also told interviewer Mike Wallace that he is so upset with the assaults on his character that he does not plan to pitch again. Hank Steinbrenner is already on record as saying that the Yankees will not re-sign Clemens, believing that it is time to go forward with younger pitchers.

What did you think of the interview? It's evident that Clemens is leaving himself very little wiggle room here, and that there will be no hazy ground. Either Clemens is completely clean, as he insists, or McNamee's story will gain even more credibility in the days going forward.

You don't need to have a third ear growing out of your forehead or be able to pull tractors with your teeth to signify steroid use.

Not surprisingly, McNamee's lawyers were not impressed with the interview. Their stance is that Clemens was so unbelievable, they won't even pursue a libel suit against the Rocket for disparaging McNamee's claims. This paints an especially messy situation for Andy Pettitte, who could have to go before Congress under oath and address if Clemens - as he claimed to Wallace - was completely in the dark about his 2002 use of human growth hormone.

But Clemens' lawyer, Rusty Hardin, seemed plenty satisfied, telling the Associated Press that anyone not swayed by Clemens' appearance is not "a well person." Not only that, but as '60 Minutes' was preparing to go to air, now we have word that Clemens has filed a defamation lawsuit against McNamee in Harris County District Court, according to the Houston Chronicle.

"All of McNamee's accusations are false and defamatory per se," the lawsuit states. "They are not true, and they injured Clemens' reputation and exposed him to public hatred, contempt, ridicule, and financial injury. McNamee made the allegations with actual malice, knowing they were false."

All this santana, 1B, bullpen, clemens talk is never ending. It's really starting to annoy me. We're all saying the same stuff, its becoming so repetetive. I want something new to talk about. Spring Training can't come any sooner..

I don't know. Do you guys buy Clemens? I guess if he wins that defamation suit, he'll win over a few people that think he used. I'll try and reserve judgement until then. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the Congressional hearings.

On the Johan front, I still think the ship has sailed for a Johan acquisition. If Cashman had pulled the trigger for him back when Rowand, Jones, and Hunter were on the market, It would have been a solid decision. If he makes the move now, we get 12 years older in centerfield, and 5 years older in the starting rotation. Not exactly a smart move. This team needs to start concentrating on getting younger. Using older veterans hasn't worked for the last 7 seasons.

Corshep, I agree. We have been saying the same **** for awhile now, LOL. Come up with something to discuss.

chaz, lets talk about a steroids brawl, anything goes.

If there was a roidmania (like WWF) who would win in this pool:

Sosa, McGuire, Palmiero, Canseco, Clemens, Bonds?

It would be one h-e-double hockey sticks of a fight lol

hi corshep!
you're totally right. lets come up with something new to talk about. how about we trade mussina for cole hamels, giambi for k-rod, pavano for prospects, and farnsworth and prospects for prince fielder?

hah those are some crazy trades. Giambi for k-rod not a chance. farns for prince not a chance. no one will take pavano. A mussina/matsui trade could be possible maybe.

Chaz i wanna here your thoughts about that roidmania '08 and maybe some play by play hahaha

I would like to see Cashman deal Farny. How viable would a trade for Brian Fuentes of the Rockies be for him?

I doubt they'd trade fuentes because the rockies have a lot of righties and fuentes was their best lefty.

I wish Cashman had a mailbag where we could send him possible trades, etc. Because it seems like he's not even trying to improve the bullpen. He seems content with garbage and trying out rooks.. GRRREAAT.

Two things I’m fed up with in the sports world.
1) Clemens

2) Brady

I really don’t care anymore whether Clemens took steroids, didn’t take steroids, was forced to take steroids…I just don’t care. And Brady this and Brady that!!

What’s the deal with Mussina? What’s his 08 role?

It will most likely be as a No. 5 starter (for better or worse). But he will moste likely battle Kennedy in Spring Training for that spot.

I don't think there's any chance Colorado will trade Fuentes for Farnsworth. IT's too much of a hitter's park, and he will get ripped if he pitches there.

I have heard that Sanchez is currently throeing and is expected to be pitching off the mound in March. Is he any chance of being available early in the season and if so surely that really helps in the pen. Also is the concensuf of opinions that Igawa is not up to it or will the one season and new pitching coach help. If so he will be a strength out of the pen, another left hander

Bryan Australia

Well, so far Cashman seems smarter than me, some would say not a stretch.

SportsGirl: Brady who? Have I been sleeping?

The moose could go across town(Mets) or Philly. With a partial payment plan?

Gidday mate, the Yanks just won't take a chance on pushing Sanchez. Igawa will need to get the ball down consistantly at SWB before we even think about him. Cash just added two more lefty candidates. And FYI the Mets have a rehabing reliever name Sanchez too, but they may need to push him!

I think Sports Girl was talking about Tom Brady, Robert. Kris Benson is still available isn't he? But I have never liked him though.

I just thought of this and wanted to see if anybody else saw this....

Pats: 16-0

Celtics: 29-3

Red Sox:......

New England Patriots recieve Randy Moss (frmly Minnesota)

Boston Celtics recieve Kevin Garnett (Minnesota)

Boston Red Sox recieve Johan Santana (Minnesota)

State tagline for Minnesota: "We'll make your bad teams the best and your best team the greatest."

Paid for by the coalition of fans against trades or free agent signings to the state of Massachusetts.

Thanks JS, even I want to see if anyone can defeat the Pats. I like all of the remaining NFC candidates for a variety of reasons. Did SD win their game? I don't think the Jags can do it!

Is Benson a possible choice for the pen? Who cares about his wacky wife!

The Pack has plenty of experience shutting Moss down, and two great corners! Couldn't put a name on the Pats running game, but there could be a sleeper there!

GOOOOOOO GIANTS!!!!!!! can we get any love on that. Cant wait for yankee baseball.

A name on the Pats running game?

Maroney, Lawrence.

Acquired via the draft from...

Drum roll please?

The Minnesota Golden Gophers!

:P

They do have Faulk (Kevin) too I believe.

I do find Clemens' suit interesting because he can also put on the stand and under-oath. So, now it's on... stay tuned whether you like it or not!

I too am beginning to think the ship has sailed on an offseason acquisition of Santana. We can still get him, but it's not looking likely. Minnesota is only going to screw themselves over, possibly the Yanks too but it will depend on the trade as I see the Twins opening the year with Santana, which gives the fans some semblance of sense on the part of their organization's brass. But, you'll see regardless of whether they're contending or not they will deal Santana by the deadline. They're probably going to try to get Johan to resign with them up to that point, but once that is evident as not happenning and the deadline approaching, he'll show up in the news as part of a trade talk rumor.

This still doesn't help us much as we'd be needing to give up something mid-season and that'd make no sense to us as we'll either be in the running for the Division or so far out of it having Santana won't matter much. Getting him while we're in contention and disrupting the chemistry doesn't make any sense either so... I say we forget about him until we see that he is going to hit the market as a FA, but that probably won't happen either as the Twins would be monumental idiots if they only receive two draft picks for their stud.

Clemens was so transparent last night. Did anyone notice the multi-second pause when prompted with the question about a lie detector test? But as noted, who cares? Clemens' reputation is tainted indefinitely...no matter what the "verdict" is...not likely to ever see him on Hall ballot. Past behind, looking forward to 2008!

haha I think Bryan's drunk. Read his post over he never makes mistakes haha. Have fun in Australia, live it up!

Wow,

It must really stink to be a New England sports fan right now! A-Holes! I hope they choke on their next Sam Adams. I've had just about enough of The Pats having their own heading on the ESPNews ticker. It just boils my blood. Who gives a **** about their regular season record. Unless they win the Super Bowl, that 16-0 regular season record means nothing. I hope that J-Ville stomps a mud hole in their butts and walks it dry. But, I guess if they do win, the '72 Dolphins can finally SHUT THE **** UP! LOL. Matt, even you have to be sick of Schula and those Jokers popping corks every season. It's just poor sportsmanship and bad form.

LOL, Bryan! You oughta be ashamed of yourself! Where's your journalistic integrity, at the bottom of your cocktail? ****. In several months visiting this blog, I have never seen Bryan so much as misplace a comma! Nah, just kidding, Bryan. If you are indeed checking in on the kids (us) while zooted out of your mind, props to you! Enjoy The Outback. The closest I will ever get is having a steak at the Outback.

Yea Bryan your the man get crunk haha. You ever do a Keg Stand Bryan.. those are amazing lol

Bryan Australia is a different Bryan than Bryan yankees.com.

But for the record, I'd love to get to Australia one day...

No comment on the keg stands. Unless you have the photos. Then I'll comment.

Anbody get any Yankees stuff for Christmas? I got a Yankees DVD trivia game from my son -- but it is too easy! Nobody at my house will play against me because they don't stand a chance!

hah I should make a drunk name. Like Corey Wells.. LOL. If your ever near Delaware I'll show you some sick parties.

Who will win the BCS game?? I'm pulling for LSU vs OSU
The Super Bowl will be the Dolphins vs Packers... OOPs, I meant the Colts vs Pack What're your picks???.

As you can see I too, am fed up with Mitchell & the Roids. Only 6 weeks to go. Let's talk BASEBALL... "GO YANKEES"

This season Josh Beckett will come back to his old self and be just a good all round pitcher again, He had too good a season last year. This will open the door a bit wider for the surging Yanks, Who should have won by at least 5 games in 2007....#27 in 2008

I should be "studying" on my online class, but I'm bored, opps I already broke my New Year's resolution to study more. Anyways just wanted to ask Matt S. if he is ready to cheer on my Colts this weekend! Are you ready Matt? You promised to be a Colt fan for the playoffs! I have my Peyton Manning jersey ready to go, bring on Philip Rivers and LT !!! God I love sports and I'm a girl!

And what idiots are picking on my mate!! You know there are language differences even within English. I don't know the alcohol level in Aussie beer.

Corey and John (Chaz)shame on you. I'm pissed.

I hope Beckett will come back to Eart this year, but you can't take anything away from his performance last year. It made me sick watching him but he was a bonified ace. However, other than Beckett that rotation can be had, I'm not saying ours is better or worse but think about it, does anybody fear Dice-K. He's a $100 milion .500 pitcher, and the Yankees shelled him every time they saw him. Schilling won 9 games last year and is like 50, he's done. Wakefield had a career year, that won't happen again especially because he had a 4.76 ERA. The only other pitcher on the staff that has promise is Bucholtz, he pitched a no hitter and has a great curve ball. There's not much to not like about a young pitcher like that. That's why we have to hold onto out Big Three. The league will begin to fear the Yankee rotation very soon, maybe not this year, but in the next 2-3 years if we hold onto all 3 of out young pitchers.

Vida,

The only thing I wanted was "The Bronx Is Burning", haven't watch it yet. I did see the show on ESPN and found the actual player comments the best. I'm hoping there is a lot more in the extra stuff!

I'm ready jeterstar, I just hope they can take out the Pats if they face them. What's the status on Harrison? Is he going to play?

Bryan Hoch,

There's a great two hour special on Australia on the Discovery Channel. I haven't burned my DVD-R yet but it would be a snap to duplicate. But, it would be illegal and my wife works for a Judge. She'd be too embarrased to work if I were arrested. I'll try to find when it's on next. Do you have cable or satellite, and which providers? Use my E-mail to answer. Bob

Matt, Harrison is good to go, Dwight Freeney is out though.

chaz, I don't think it's poor sportsmanship at all for the Phins to be popping those corks when someone loses. It's a historical mark, let them be proud of that. It's bad enough they don't get any props at all for being the greatest team in NFL history!!

How long is Freeney out for? IF the Colts do get knocked out of the playoffs will you become a Phins fan?

And I know Peter Abraham voted for Sabathia because Beckett wasn't that good against us regular season. The playoffs were a different story.

Here's a thought for everyone, Hank is trying to draw Bill Smith ( not the former Isles goalie, I think)

into negotiations again. I see our "new" offer being Kennedy, Jackson and/or Tabata, and a few others. The Twins have pitching in the farm, so right now they're deciding if they want a pitcher or center fielder. And I think they don't want Crisp's salary or Lester's medical history. But, that's just my opinion.

Buchholz finished the year injured. So there's at least a small ? over his head. I saw him pitch but it was a relief effort against Baltimore and they shut him down the next day. I think his nohit was also the O's, not exactly a strong lineup. I'm conflicted here: Do I like him cause he's a kid, or not because he's a RSox.

Robert -- check your e-mail.

I think we all agree Santana for just $ would be the sweetest. And if he breaks down in any year he can go to the pen and be our lefty specialist (a very expensive one) but it's just $. The added revenue from the new stadium's luxury boxes will likely be spent on the team anyhow. Any body remember Frank Tannana?

Don't get mad, Robert! Get Crunk! LOL.

No not you guys too! Enough Pats convo! Enough of Tom "my pants are too tight" Brady! And the New England "were so effing cool" Patriots!! Colts all the way! And I am actually rooting for the giants (Although I am pissed that they couldn't beat the pats-a game I was actually at and was booed at for wearing a P.Manning 18 jersey, and it was so insipid that I left early) but yea, I want them to win because I have this ultimate scenario in my head of a Manning VS Manning super bowl.
My wonderful city is forgetting baseball!! There is this block I know that has big Yankee signs all over it, so yea they're not there anymore. I think this whole Clemens business moved them. I really don’t feel like all the drastic changes (Torre for example) have sunk into my mind yet. I keep thinking he’s there. I’m in for a big shock on opening day. K, how long is Cashman’s Hanukkah/Christmas/New Year’s vacation? Make a move dude. Maybe that’s why all the conversations are about Clemens or Santana. Neither of which are on the Yankees at the moment so…

robert relax man lol? I was encouraging him to get down, not discouraging him! why are you getting mad at me? Bryan's a young dude who likes to get a little wild every now and again, who doesn't? Don't attack me and chaz cuz we support that!! GET CRUNK lol

dont hate.. get crunk!!

haha thats my new saying.

I just heard from Australia via E-mail. He wanted me to call collect but I just told him his sign on change from BigPond to just his first name had you both confused with Bryan Hoch.

And, Chaz, I haven't been drunk in near 23 years. My love affair with 12 year old scotch was bad for my mental health. Thank God I never had the Leyritz trajedy happen, though it sounds to me the victim had no seat belt. Still no excuse at all but she might at least still be alive. Three lessons there. And you might understand our mate's concern on the **** in the context of your eight year old.

WOW! The word sounding like corn gets zapped too!

Bryan McLeod is 56 with a grown son and sons aged 12 and 14. Australian Rules Football caused six knee surgeries (three on each.) Get the mind in gear first guys!!!

Simple case of mistaken identity, Robert. MY BAD. I wasn't attempting to insult anyone anyway. I was just having a little fun with who I thought was Mr. Hoch. Bryan McLeod? Of the Clan McLeod? LOL. Didn't know that you switched user names, Bryan. Sorry about the mix-up! Glad to see that The Yankees Universe expands into the Land Downunder! Get'cha a pull!

Haven't been drunk in 23 years? Dude, I haven't been drunk in the last 23 hours and I thought I was doing well!

I am so glad that being from way way Australia is clear to all. Apologies for people confusing it with Bryan Hoch only wish I had the same knowledge. In future I will sign off as BMAC hope no one uses that name. Great to a colleague going into bat for me , thanks Bob.
Fair Dinkum you would think are all Colonial Natives or something. It is truly a great and beautiful country. Chax I did not understand American slang such as Get,cha a pull but you probably have not heard Fair Dinkum. On a serious note I do enjoy all comments made and the passion in the Yankees portrayed by all. I manage to learn something new everyday which increases my knowledge in the game and player personell.

Robert mate Is this true re the long long drawn out saga re Santana, trade Kennedy Jackson Tabata and " others " Thats sounds a little more attractive and viable. I am now a little persuaded with trading for him, even the loss of Kennedy but to get you do have to give

BMAC Australia

I live in the Tampa Bay area, and most of the colts and patriots fans are Bandwagoners. Go Geee-MEN.

I hope the Jags can beat the stuipid pats and go all the way.

So, Pettitte hired the same attorney's that advised Sosa during his congressional hearing. I doubt the "I don't speak English" excuse will work well for Pettitte...

Mate,

My post at 6:12 PM was:

I think we all agree Santana for just $ would be the sweetest. And if he breaks down in any year he can go to the pen and be our lefty specialist (a very expensive one) but it's just $. The added revenue from the new stadium's luxury boxes will likely be spent on the team anyhow. Any body remember Frank Tannana?

Sorry Bud

I was referring to an earlier post I believe when you mentioned players Kennedy Jackson Tabbata etc. Is this a realiy ?

I get the feeling that this Santana deal is a big game of chicken. We all know that Mini-Boss wants to pull the trigger but others in the mix are against it, so I can see the Yankees playing to the statement made by Santana to the Twins that he will not wave his no trade mid-season and that the Twins will not want to lose Santana in return for two draft picks to their advantage. If the Yankees exercise patience, knowing their offer without Hughes is still best, they can get Mini to panic and be willing to pull the trigger for an offer of Kennedy and prospects. Thats a much more palitable option than one with Hughes Kennedy and prospects or simply Hughes and prospects. Just wondering if people would be more in favor of a Santana deal if it were only Kennedy and not Hughes?

I also read this on a different site:

Baseball America (the prospect bible) released it's online version of the Yanks Top 10 Prospects. Brett Gardner was awarded 'Best Strike-Zone Discipline' and 'Fastest Baserunner' - that's a deadly combination. Joba came out even better - he was awarded 'Best Fastball,' 'Best Slider' and 'Best Curveball' in the whole minor league organization

I have just been reading over matters pertaining to Clemens, all that aside seriously where does this leave Pettitte. Will it be guilt by association if . Where will this all leave the pitching rotation, does it or will it have an impact.

Wholohan

This is I believe what Robert posted earlier and I for one would be prepared to come around with that line of thinking. Maybe give up Kennedy and be able to retain Cabrera , sure still a loss but you will not get Santana for zip. As I posted earlier to get something you have to give. Where before I was very much leaning to no trade at all I could come at this option. The upside gain Santana, retain Cabrera and have Gardner in the wings. A win win win.

BMAC Australia ( ex Bryan )

Do I have to change my name to "Bryan" to get it to show up at the bottom of my posts??

Mate,

When I mentioned Kennedy, Jackson, etc., I was speculating on the possibility of trading and not giving up Cabrera + Hughes.

My other post said it would be even sweeter to give up no players at all.

rcn,

I think using a hyperlink(?) permits you to replace your MLB account (most of us use our E-mail address) with any word. The example you see is KBPPL@bigpond.com being replaced with Bryan (McLeod not Hoch) to present a more friendly approach (I think.)

I still prefer my E-mail address so anyone can come directly with something they don't want to say in a public forum.

Cabrera & Kennedy were thisclose to being traded away at the December meetings last month. Cashman wanted Santana badly and the Twins needed a centerfielder. I was more opposed to losing Cabrera than Kennedy. This trade could still happen, but not without losing Cabrera. That's a given. This would would be big mistake on Yankees' part. Cabrera is young, and he's already earning his "stripes"...and he can only get better with age. Same with Kennedy.

This is total bs. Roger Clemens is guilty and we all know it. Why would McNamee want to screw over a guy he considers his brother? Doesn't make sense at all. And when Clemens was wrongly accused, why didn't he come straight out and prove his innoncence? It doesn't add up. Add to the fact that he went 11-0 after the All Star Break in 1998 (which is around the time McNamee claims to have injected him) the evidence is too much.
He also went 20-3 in 2001 as a man brinking on his 40's.

I want to believe he's innocent but he's not.

Enough about Clemens and Santana please!

Question about MLB.TV for you guys...it says I can watch some spring training games...does that mean I can watch all of the Yanks' spring training games? Cuz that'd be SICK.

Hey, jlemoine!

Good question regarding spring training games...

I wasn't sure, so I called MLB.TV customer service to find out...

From the information I received from the rep I talked to, he said, yes, all games, from all teams during spring training will be available to be viewed on MLB.TV...He also said, there are no blackout restrictions. So, that does sound great!

You can call customer service at: 1-866-800-1275, for more information. Take care!

Jimmy27NYY

http://baseballtheyankeesandlife.mlblogs.com/

Hey Matt, to answer your question about me becoming a Phin fan, I'm loyal to the Colts, so probably not, but I think Parcells will turn your team around, in the next couple of years, if not sooner!

Thanks Jimmy, that is indeed great news!

Can't wait for baseball!

Parcells is already of to a great start by firing Mueller, and Cameron, and getting Ireland from Dallas. He is definitely moving quickly , and decisively, I love it. Big question is what he is going to do with the players.

I think I'll set the record for shortest stint as a Colts fan if they don't beat the Pats.

The Pats scare me Matt, I have nightmares about Tom Brady and Belli-CHEAT!!! God I hate them.

I'm only saying I would pull out all the stops to keep Cabrera, including a sneaky little "bait and switch."
As nobody could replace Hughes, not a chance I would trade him for anyone.

And Cashman can always say "the Boss made me do it."

Hey JLemoine,

Yes what Jimmy said is true, you get all spring training games with MLB.TV.

I actually got my first year late and missed it but was an early bird last year so I watched a great deal of ST, which is why I'm so befuddled about Igawa but anyway...

Yes, MLB.TV is the BOMB! I have never watched more baseball and I love it! I just turn it on and can have the tube going or playing vids, cookin', whatever! Of course if I want to I can always tune in to other games too which is the best yet!

I did pass on the MLB.TV Mosaic or whatever that was, I didn't really need to see six screens of baseball all at once, not that that wouldn't be cool too, I just prefer to follow one or two at a time, Sportscenter can take care of the rest.

JL,

I bought MLB last spring only to find cable and/or satelite had all of the games too! And on my bigger screen. Plus the 700 resolution didn't start until the regular season. Could be different this year, and MLB will give you games you can't get if you're interested in watching any other teams, like the Red Sox.

Depends on the value of $15.00 to you (last years price.)

Lets just call me Justin, my email seems a bit too impersonal.

I don't have the option of cable/satellite, since I am bound to the channels provided to me by my university (for now). Being as that I'm in Vermont, I can watch all the Red Sox games I want to on NESN...I hope the 700 resolution has the ST games this year, because I was planning on shelling out the extra cash for a better quality this go-around. I'll have to look into that.

Yeah I hear all the BoSox games up in VT land, unfortunatly. The worst part is Comcast doesn't offer YES at all even as an add on to their cable packages. I even convinceb my BoSox buddy to pitch in for YES so I can watch games but they don't offer so I'm left with MLB.TV, at least I'll get spring games.

you know what i think is that the media should leave him alone and everybody else involved in the Mitchell Report because i dont think its a big deal i could give a cr@## about who used steroids in the pass

In the other hand if you tell me that theres a player that is breaking a league rule know and uses steroids, hgh, or whatever other banned substances know thats a big deal because he broke league rule

but all those players named in the Mitchell Report most of them dint break no league rule because there wasnt any rule on hgh or steroids so they did not do anything wrong

With all do respect to Roger Clemens if you did do it not saying you did admit it to congress and dont get your self in worst trouble whatever you do Roger i am 100% rooting for you and i hope a team gets to sign you and you do great this season to prove that you dnt need non of that stuff to have a good year GO ROGER
