The Goose gets in
Congratulations are in order for Rich "Goose" Gossage, whose long wait is over. On the ninth try, the former Yankees closer was selected as the lone inductee for this year's class of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Gossage missed by just 21 votes last year, and looking over his career statistics, it was difficult to argue that this should have been the last time Gossage was forced to sit by a telephone waiting for it to ring on announcement day.
The closer role has evolved so much over the last 20 years and gained specialization, but Gossage and his peers were real 'firemen' -- it's so difficult to imagine an elite type like Mariano Rivera coming in for three innings routinely, but that's the way the game worked back then. As this New York Times article points out, the comparisons are staggering.
This year's close call award goes to the former Boston Red Sox slugger Jim Rice, who missed by 16 votes. Don Mattingly gained a few votes this year, up to 86 and 15.8 percent of ballots cast -- enough to remain on the ballot but far shy of the 75 percent needed for induction.
As for the Roger Clemens situation, what's there left to say that hasn't been covered in the thousands upon thousands of words of coverage published Monday? Still, for a little different take on the Clemens events, check out this multimedia video streaming on MLB.com from his press conference in Houston yesterday.

I love being the first person to post, anyways, Go Goose! He freakin deserves to be in the HOF, it is insane that he had to wait this long.

Goose has got my support as well. I think this is his year.

Jeterstar, I too would like to see the "Goose" inducted. Do you remember him as a RP or just because he played for the YANKS?
The reason I ask is that, I may be wrong but I thought you were too young to remember him. (No offense intended) I also would like to see Big Mac get in, since he was never proven to take have taken drugs, No matter what we may think. Also Baseball loved all the attention it received during the so called "era" of steroids.

Yeah Fjr, I'm 23 BUT my dad is a die hard Yankee fan from the Bronx and he taught me about Goose and other older Yankee players , so I understand that he deserves to be in HOF. As far as Mark is concerned I didn't know he had like 49 homers in his rookie year, isn't that a record? But I'm not sure I would vote for him. I'm not sure if I would vote for Barry Bonds either, but I would vote for Clemens, I still love him even with all this **** going on, I can't help it, he's a Texan like me!

I loved watching Goose pitch. He was definitely one of the most feared, and dominant relievers of his day, I can't believe he isn't in the myself. Hopefully this will be his year.

Very nice to see, the Goose does deserve to be in the Hall... and now he is! Whoo!
Goose is also just a bit early for my time, I was still just a wee-lad when he was in Pinstripes but I do recall him from the days of yore...
A good day for Yanks fans considering that they've not been so great of late. :P
Congratulations Rich Gossage, you deserve it!!

The Goose was intimidating on the mound. Big guy, mean stare, plenty of heat, and not afraid to buzz you too. But one guy could always take him deep, George Brett. And the pine tar homer, yup, off of the goose. Can Brett’s statue in the Hall still do it!

nodigidee,
I'm on the opposite end of California in the SF Bay Area.

Congratulations Goose !!! Does anybody know if he's going to the Hall as a Yankee???

Everyone gets braves games? Oh, I thought we always got them here because it's the east coast. What’s so special about the braves that they have to be nationally televised?
I was just contemplating at the moment, what exactly Giambi is doing this season. Damon is obviously better as DH and Melki, Abreu, and Matsui outfield was great. That doesn't offer Giambi much room to wiggle into though. I also liked the option of Mientkiwicz and Phillips better than Betemit and Duncan at first. And there is no starting first basemen at this point. Is that going to be a problem?

TBS is why the Braves are nationally televised, and I think Shelly Duncan can do ok at 1B but I don't think he'll be the guy. He'd most likely make up for the difference between himself and Mientkiwcz fielding wise with his hitting, but Betemit will probably get the nod, unless the Yanks are really tossing the idea of fielding Giambi. I don't see how you can lose his bat in the everyday lineup, as much as I think hes a bum he can still jack 30 HR and drive in 100 RBI if he stays healthy. That if is in 72pt. font though as since his stoppage of the muscle juice he's been an injury magnet. Either way its like a Moose situation a roster spot should be his until he looses it, be it the 1B sopt or the DH spot. I'd much rather see Melky lead off and Giambi at DH than Damen do both. What other team has their DH as their lead-off hitter? I'd be surprised if there are any. And I agree Sui, Melky, Abreu was a good OF but Damen was no slouch in LF either.

Congrats Goose!
I'm only 19, so I never got to see him play, but my dad has always been a big fan on Goose, and he was very excited to find out he got in.

I think that Giambi has to be the opening day guy @ 1b even if his D stinks. He gets paid too much to ride the pine and he can still put up numbers offensively. I also think Damon should play more LF & let Godzilla DH. Keep Betemit away from 1st. He's a utility guy that's more valuable coming in to give Jeets & A-Rod rest.

I think we found out Betemit is not quit quick enough at 2B or SS. Nick Green is back in the mix for that.

Hopefully Betemit is working on that as we speak. I liked Green last season, but do you think he has a chance to make the team?

Wilson has too big a body for those positions, but ideal for 1B and 3B. There are other candidates that may beat Green out. I think little chance for Cairo again wherever he his. My favorite sub for years was Velarde. Shame Senator Mitchell knows his name.

Other new faces for middle infield are Bernie Castro and Cody Ransom plus Alberto Gonzalez should get a look too unless traded. The three not in NY will be at SWB.

Giambi's feet won't let him play 1B much. I think I could beat him around the bases and I'm near twice his age. Wait, I know I could!

Congrats to Goose. Good looking out, Mr. Gossage. One of the best relievers of all time. If only he could turn back the clock and suit up for us this season, we could sure use him!
On the Giambi front, the usage of steroids is WHY he gets injured so often. It's one of the side effects of putting that **** into your body. It makes your tendons and ligaments about as useless as teats on a boar pig. The answer to our first base situation is simple. Giambi plays 1B unless he gets injured. If he gets hurt, then the spot falls to whichever bench player is having the better season. We can't afford to have Giambi's production out of the lineup while he can still swing a bat. His potential for driving in runs far exceeds his potential for making errors. Besides, he played 121 innings last season at 1B, and only committed 1 error. That's good for a .991 fielding percentage. If he can play first base and keep his FP over .990 and manage to crank (no pun intended) 30 jacks and drive in 100 rbi's, that pretty much makes him the first baseman that we keep blabbering on and on and on and on and on about. Frankly, the Yankees have no choice but to play him in the field. It would be stupid to bench him, and start a guy that has 1/2 (at best) the offensive capability. There isn't anyone out there that can convince me that it makes more sense to start Betemit, who will hit 15-20 homers while batting .220; Duncan, who will probably do about the same, or any other scrub off of the bench over Giambi.

Oh, and noone in baseball is going to bench a player because he has a track record of injury. If that were the case, The Natti Reds would have benched Ken Griffey Jr. about 6 seasons ago. If Giambi is healthy, he needs to earn that 12 milly he pulls down every season. Starting dudes that make the league minimum and put out 1/2 the numbers over him just because he "may" get injured is rediculous. Jason Giambi is the starting 1B for the New York Yankees, end of discussion.

Shelley Duncan and Wilson Betemit are S-C-R-U-B-S! They are, at best, bench warmers who need only hold a bat during BP, or when they are playing to rest our STARTERS. These d-bags need not see a whiff of a starting gig on this team.

Couldn't agree more Chaz, we think alike on most Yankee matters, and getting crunk haha.
Giambi must play 1B, why would he be our DH.. makes no sense stealing at-bats from a .290-.300 avg 25 HR's and 100 rbi guy. Betemit disgusts me. Yes he's 25, but has not shown 1 ounce of improvement since his rookie season. I mean constantly hitting .230.. jeez what's he doing in the majors?!? I think Giambi should get about 3/4 of the starts at 1B and Duncan can fill in for the other so Giambi doesn't get worn out.
Tex would be a beast for our team, one only hopes Atlanta doesn't wrap him up!

Bryan,
Have you heard any rumors about Tex and his free agency? Does Atlanta have the money to sign Tex to a rich 4-5 year deal? Or will he likely hit the market and go to the highest bidding team?

As much as I don't want to see Giambi play first, I agree with you Chaz. He may not be the best option defensively, but he's our best option (which may be kind of sad, but that's another matter entirely).
Besides, having Giambi at first opens up the DH slot for Damon and Matsui to play when he's not in left. I have a feeling he'll start to break down by July or August, but if thats the case, start to DH him more THEN, as opposed to starting the season with Giambi as the fulltime DH.

Oh, and Tex in 09 is probably the best thing ever. Can you imagine him in the #5 spot giving A-Rod more protection in the lineup? DIRTY.

Hey guys,
Remember this to spell Teixeira, it's ei, ei, r.
Be nice to have him in 2009, but the contact may be enormous, both in $ and years.
Well, I think Hal and Cashman will keep the sanity.
We have some kids developing and I heard Montero may grow too big to catch. Or Betemit/Duncan could surprise everyone.

I think Giambi is the only real option to start at first. I would rather see Duncan backing Giambi at first rather than Betemit. But anyone who has been reading this blog on a regular basis knows how I feel about Betemit. IF Betemit does hit .220 with 15-20 HRs this season ( which I don't think he will do ) they will be most likely be meaningless homeruns. IF he does start expect to see 100-150 strikeouts from that guy, not the type of hitter you want starting at any position.

Don't think Texeira will be going anywhere, the Braves will lock him up, they would be foolish to let him walk for nothing.
Montero is another 4 or 5 years away from the bigs so it's too early to say how big he will actually get.

In answer to vvturner, yes, Gossage was inducted as a Yankee...although some have been squabbling saying that he should represent the Padres, along with **** Williams, where their presence became most noticeable when they helped San Diego get to WS in '84..But i'm glad that he's going in as a Yankee. Watched him many, many times...what a pitcher..what a reliever..and without the use of 'roids..LOL.
The '78 Yankees...what a team! Will never forget that season!!!!
