Yanks' troubles continue in Baltimore
Even a trip to Baltimore, which usually serves to fix some of what goes wrong in the Yankees' universe, couldn't right their path on Tuesday. Scott Proctor issued a bases-loaded walk to Ramon Hernandez in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Orioles took the first game of the series, 3-2.
The Yankees, teased by moving a season-high three games above .500 before leaving New York, have dropped six of seven games on this trip - swept in Colorado, defeating the Giants just once and losing the opener of a three-game set at Camden Yards. They're now two games below the break-even mark at 36-38.
At least Johnny Damon seems to be feeling a little better. He made the most of his off-day Monday, jetting to Orlando, Fla. to visit with his chiropractic specialist, Gerry Mattia, right after replacing the crown he lost on a tooth while preparing to pinch-hit in Colorado. Meanwhile, Bobby Abreu was dropped to eighth in the midst of a four-hit road trip that has seen him walk just once and return to his pull-happy ways.
Here's an interesting offshoot tidbit - seven starters older than 40, including Roger Clemens, are scheduled to start today. That's a new record, reports the Elias Sports Bureau, topping the previous mark of six. The other pitchers hurling today are Jamie Moyer (Phillies, 44), Kenny Rogers (Tigers, 42), Greg Maddux (Padres, 41), Tom Glavine (Mets, 41), Woody Williams (Astros, 40) and John Smoltz (Braves, 40).
Clemens wasn't with the team yesterday - the first game he's missed since that July 9 debut against the Pirates - to attend the funeral of a friend's mother in Connecticut, Joe Torre told reporters yesterday. He'll be in Baltimore in plenty of time to pitch tonight.
One final thing. The New York Daily News is running a terrific special online section rolling the clock back to the 1977 Yankees and "The Bronx is Burning" era. Also included are looks at the New York blackout, the Son of Sam scare and the mayoral race. It - and the Jonathan Mahler book of the same name - are definitely worth checking out.

Bryan,
I hope Clemens doesn't come to this site. That horrible picture of him is still up.
It is time to simply release Proctor and Bruney, I don't think Atlanta still wants Proctor. Bruney is worth nothing.

Torre's bullpen blunderby: Rob Neyer

I'm 100 percent sure that Joe Torre is trying to win.
Well, maybe 99 percent sure. I know just enough about quantum physics to know I can't be 100 percent sure about anything.
But I'm 99 percent sure that Torre is trying to win. After all, someday he's going to be elected to the Hall of Fame as a manager, and there aren't many Hall of Fame managers who weren't really, really trying to win.
You had to wonder last night, though. You had to wonder, while watching Scott Proctor walk home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, with Mariano Rivera never having thrown a single pitch in the game.
As a friend wrote me last night, a few seconds after Corey Patterson trotted home with that winning run,
It's just insane. There is no logical reason why, facing a situtation WHERE YOU CANNOT GIVE UP A RUN, OR YOU LOSE (and fall two games under .500), you would choose Proctor over Rivera. This is managing to a statistic -- the save -- rather than to win. According to Torre's logic, you use Proctor when you simply can't give up a run, and you use Rivera when you can. Absurd.
Indeed. I've been harping on this since (at least) Game 4 of the 2003 World Series, when the Yankees lost a 12-inning game and Rivera never left the bullpen. But Torre keeps making the same mistake, over and over and over again.
Last Saturday in San Francisco, the Yankees lost a 13-inning game. Rivera never left the bullpen. In fact, every relief pitcher pitched except the Yankees' best relief pitcher.
Granted, Rivera had thrown 20 pitches the night before. So we'll cut Torre some slack there. But last night? Rivera hadn't pitched at all since that 20-pitch outing last Friday. Last night he was as well-rested as you'd ever want your closer to be. No slack on this one.
In Torre's autobiography he wrote, "I'm more concerned about winning the game than trying to cover my butt."
Really, Joe? Next time you're on the road and the game's tied in the ninth, prove it.

This team is getting frustrated, which is something you haven't seen out of the Yankees in a long time (at least outwardly where the public can see it).
Proctor was junk last night, but he also is overused, so a bad outing is bound to happen.
It's getting close to time where decisions need to be made.

Proctor always looks like junk, no matter if he is overused or not. Actually all the middle relievers are complete trash.

Sorry J, not gonna happen. Abreu is possible but Cashman would be fired, he might be fired anyway and Michaels is not gonna do that.

bpark , I stand by Proctor , he is just not being used properly . He is a great guy , a great teammate , and really cares about this team . Last night , he cost us the game . Not only did he walk in the orioles' winning run , but there was a bigger mistake made that inning . When he caught the bunt on the fly , he should have doubled up somebody at first or second , but his mind wasn't in the game , neither was the catcher Posada who didn't tell him to throw at one of the bases(preferably second base) . All that was a mess , but a mess joe Torre started for not putting MO in . you are so right . Since Alex Gonzalez went walk off on Jeff Weaver in the 2003 World Series , I begun to ask myself if Joe was still the man for the job . Turns out he wins three more divisional titles , but hasn't been back to the series since then , and not passed the alds two straight years . I know it is time for Joe to go , or the pitching will get worse and worse .
Now , onto Bruney . He is not stellar , but he is absolutely the third beat guy in the bullpen , behind Mo and Scotty . His numbers are : 36 appearances , 32.0 innings pitched , 26 K's , with a 1.97 era . He is not stellar , I repeat , but he is way better than Vizcaino , Myers , farnsworthless and rRon Villone , whom I defended in the past for being a lefty , but he no longer fits the job . Another point on defense for Scotyy , he is the gauy that has pitched the most in that bullpen . And he is fiery , someone this team needs . Believe me , we are better off with him than without him . he is not a setup man . When we trade , we need a legitimate setup man and a solid lefty coming from the bullpen .

Its gonna be real hard to find bullpen guys. Everyone is looking and there is not alot of confirmed quality.

I hate the Yankees' bullpen. But that being said, if/when (hopefully soon) the Yanks revamp that 'pen, I think Proctor, Bruney, and Mo need to stay. Proctor is a decent reliever, but he can't say every situation. Unfortunately, he is one of a very select few decent relievers, so he gets used far too often.
Farnswroth, Viscaino, Meyers, however, get no such sympathy from me. Get rid of those jokers.

Boston got swept we couldn't pick up any ground.

Proctor is finished, in NY anyway. Bruney has some value, as anyone who can throw in the mid 90's does, so we might be able to get someone decent for him. It's too bad, because as sentinel has said, he's been fairly effective this year. It's just that he's wildly inconsistant (a microcosm of the entire Yankees season). I've heard that both Dotel (God no!) and Danys Baez are being considered. Have you heard anything Bryan?
Hillenbrand has decent numbers both at the plate and at first, is righthanded, but do we want another big mouthed, self-centered player on the team? Couldn't we have just kept Sheff? If he gets belligerent like he did in Toronto, maybe we could get Zim back to challenge him to a fight.
Would somebody please put Damon on the DL? Why do the yanks keep putting him into the lineup? Bad back, bad feet, bad legs, bad belly, and now his teeth are falling out? He sounds like the geezer in the checkout line who tells you all about his aches and pains. You feel sorry for him but at the same time you're embarrassed for him.
