Who's hot, who's not

As we wait for the Yankees to get back in action Tuesday night in Baltimore, a quick look at who's been swinging the bat well and who hasn't on this road trip to Denver and Colorado ...

Alex Rodriguez, 12-for-22 (.545), 7 R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 6 BB
Derek Jeter, 8-for-23 (.348), 2 R, 4 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 3 BB
Melky Cabrera, 8-for-23 (.348), 4 R, 2 2B, 2 3B, 3 RBI, 1 BB

Johnny Damon, 1-for-9 (.111)
Hideki Matsui, 4-for-24 (.167), 1 HR
Miguel Cairo, 3-for-15 (.200), 1 2B

As I detailed in my off-day story today, the Yankees are one of the few teams who get a near-full turnout for early batting practice sessions on the road, so effort really hasn't been the problem. Also, for those interested in more of Roger Clemens' relief appearance yesterday, our own Mike Bauman did an excellent job laying out the situation and what it means to the Yankees.

they're giving effort in batting practice!!

thank God, because otherwise i'd be feeling pretty disappointed

The Yankees got plenty of "batting practice" in Saturday's game against the giants, pounding out 17 hits, but scoring only 5 runs. They need to "practice" scoring runs, not hitting the ball.

The Yankee bullpen is a disgrace, the offspring of Brian Cashman. Mariano, thankfully, is not one of his offspring. Anyone who thinks the Yanks can even win the wildcard with this relief corps has to be delusional. No more excuses Joe! Face the facts! They stink to high heaven! You can't get blood out a stone!

Torre will reach some milestones and so will Alex this year; maybe Jeter and Posada will as well. The team, however will finish the season below .500 and possibly in last place. With a few exceptions most of the team are impostors in Yankee uniforms - well paid impostors I should add!

I agree with the pen comment. Bruney, Proctor and Farnsworth should go now. Myers is ok with one batter. Proctors is way over used and perhaps can stay if used right. Rivera pitchers once a month, how can he stay ready? I was wrong the outfield is not the biggest need its the pen. Fuentes looked mighty good, add him and Gagne quick.

I disagree that will be below 500, no chance!!! We'll win the division.

bpark, i agree with you a lot of the time, but this yankee team is not going to catch boston and they're going to miss the playoffs for the first time in a long time

a losing record? it might be possible if things remain this bad all summer, because things will be so gloomy that everyone will probably just be going through the motions at the end

brian fuentes isn't going anywhere, i wouldn't want to pay the price for eric gagne when 1)we aren't going anywhere and 2)gagne is an injury waiting to happen

How many games were we out 2 years ago? We are 10 out in the loss column now.

One name FLASH. He is > Farnsworth

there's a big difference between this year and 2005

in 2005 we floundred through 30 games at 11-19 before we started playing real yankee baseball

this year, we're 36-37...that's 73 games in, nearly to the halfway point...that's much more alarming

boston would have to have a collapse of epic proportions not to win the AL East, and there are too many good teams in the wild card race (cleveland, seattle, oakland) for me to have confidence that we can play well enough to win it

i like flash gordon a lot, even though he was apparently ralphing all over himself in the 2004 ALCS (symbolic of that yankee team btw)...but gordon was a durable yankee and a very good setup man for mo...people forget this when they say the yanks haven't had a good setup man since jeff nelson

but gordon's hurt right now, his body is breaking down, he's 38 or 39 years old, near the end of his career...philadelphia's a decent team and they won't trade him anyway, but it doesn't make any sense for the yanks to go after him or any other reliever

bullpen help isn't going to come cheap, and it doesn't make sense to pay the price when this team isn't going to make the playoffs

I hope everyone stops questioning the commitment of Roger Clemens to the Yankee cause . I liked the fact he was willing to appear from the bullpen , but not the fact he actually did . so now the bullpen is overworked , huh? Ihave been saying this is going to get worse and worse since mid-may . Cashman and Torre will be fired by the All-Star break if they are 10 + out , I hope .

I am not suggesting they re-acquire flash. We should have kept him.

The day Torre is FIRED, Bryan will hand you the blog sentinel.

Torre will retire or stepdown, he won't be fired. Cashman on the other hand i'm not so sure about.

Torre needs to go and Girardi needs to take over now. Cashman needs to be let go too. The Yankees need to be torn apart and put back together again with YOUNG, eager, passionate players, who are in it to win a freakin championship. No more over paid and over rated players.

So would Jeter be part of that? This rebuilding you speak of, how many year should we wait before winning another title?

No I don't want Jeter to be part of the rebuilding, he is obviously still talented and somewhat young enough to build around him and maybe a couple of other veterans like Jorge Posada.
