Three for the Birds

Newspapers_3An assortment of stories from today's newspapers, as Andy Pettitte and the Yankees prepare to open a three-game series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards...

The trigger could be pulled on an expensive rental player like Chicago's Jermaine Dye (remember this rumor from a few weeks back, when the again-slumping Bobby Abreu was being dangled as the bait?), writes Anthony McCarron, but probably not without some serious overpaying. The Yankees have entered the ring considering another White Sox player, Mark Buerhle, Ken Davidoff writes.

A decision will be made today regarding Johnny Damon and the disabled list. You wonder if the Yankees are going to be fooled by Damon's appearance on Sunday at San Francisco, when even Joe Torre raved that Damon showed a lot of life in his body. That may have been the case, but for as many times as Damon has been a spark lately, he's also appeared tired and beat up. The best thing Damon can do right now is to take a load off and rest.

Perhaps, as Mike Vaccaro writes, the Yankees need to scrap ideas of catching the Red Sox and focus on the wild card. The day hasn't yet come when you'll hear players acknowledge that freely, but it's a fair point. And a happy birthday to Derek Jeter, who turns 33. Ed Price has a list of 33 things you may not know about Jeter.

Nick Punto ,Jhonny Peralta , Shawn Green , and C.C. Sabathia are were SUPER HOT last night .

And what a great game between the Cubs and the Rockies , a lousy team that swept our lousy Yankees , and who knew ? ,the Cubs crush their hearts yesterday , hahaha happy happy . I was lucky enough to hve been watching , and felt some jitters watching how this game unfolded ( I have MLB extra innings and can watch ANY game I want , hehehe , all of you who don't are more or less losers). You have to go back to 1982 to find another game in which the visiting team struck for 6 runs in the top of the 9th to take the lead , then the home team walking off in the bottom ninth . Exciting .

And , goff , you are way wrong about the Yankees talent . It can't carry our team over solid base and fundamentally sound teams (dreaded Angels) , much less ride an upcoming harrowing playoff race which will leave the Yankees in the dust unless managerial and personel change are made . We need baseball hungry people to come here , we no longer need mercenaries baecause they have failed to claim the bounty . And , by all that is sacred , forever keep A-Rod with the Yankees . he will wind up as the GREATEST PLAYER TO EVER PLAY THE GAME , PERIOD! Trade him , and watch baseball history slip right through our hands . And last , but not least , I still think pgarret , glewis , and mattsaikirolemodel767 , and their army of baseball challenged m o r o n $ , are all nitwits and ultra a $ $ holes .

sentineloffools, once again you have lived down to your name as well as showing why you are the most retarded of the Idiot Twins. This blog has more class and more intelligent postings when you don't post anything, fool. You are an embarrassment as a Yankee fan since you have show what kind of a retarded idiot you are since you have never posted anything intelligent. Go post somewhere else and leave those kids you keep obsessing about alone. You should just post on the RedSox blog, that way you can fit in with the rest of those idiots and no one would know. I hope Bryan bans you from this blog ,you're postings are nothing but boring unintelligent garbage which everyone is tiredof reading you intellectually challenged fool!!!!

You tell em G! Now I fart on both of you...

Nothing about baseball , as usual glewis . And look at the retarded myabuttreeks siding with you . Anyone can know who you guys are . You are very baseball alliterate . Also , I wouldn't consider my 17 yr. old girlfriends kids , they are blossomed women alright . Now you and your small life , good for nothing , little people are what I consider kids .

That said , time is drawing nigh for a trade . Farnsworth (5.16 era , Villone ( lefty , yes , but 5.25 era and 17 baserunners in 13 innings!) , Vizcaino ( worthless like glewis and co. with a 5.35 era and 58 , yes 58 , baserunners allowed in 37.0 innings , worthless .) , Mike Mussina ( old , no longer ace caliber , fastball tops at 88 mph , 3-5 record with an era of nearlt 5.00) , Damon ( old , crappy , no longer needed ) , Bobby Abreu ( can't keep waiting on his hot-cold bat) , and a couple minor leaguers(don't touch the young pitchers , they look so promising) should be put out there as bait . Try to get a legitimate lefty in the bullpen , maybe a right hander for starter , and a buch of minor leaguers . The right field should be occupied by someone with average batting and GOOD defense , same should be said about first base . Great Defense , normal offense is what we should look for for our position vacancies , we no longer need to buy a megastar to win it all . That and we need to start playing fundamentally sound baseball if we hope to win the championship , and pronto!!! We can't keep waiting for them big innings , we must start pitching and playing real baseball , trying to win games 2-1 , 4-2 and so on , something the Red Sox have done extremely well this season . Don't go for the big names , please? And get rid of damon before he is worth nothing .

I hate you glewis .

This is why the Yankees are such a bad team , unprepared to win close games , wich are the majority of the games .

Games decided by 1 run :

W - 4 L - 12

Games decided by 2-4 runs :

W - 14 L -18

Games decided by 5 runs ( or cordially reffered to as blowouts)

W - 18 L-7

So in games that are not blowouts , the Yankees are an astounding 18 - 30 , a summary of their season . The Sox , on the other hand , are a healthy 31 - 17 in close games . That is why they are better .

I hate , you glewis , pgarret , AND mattsaikirolemode767 .

Please close this board, there is too much fighting about what is only a game on a "blog".

I'm not going to jump into the fighting here, but I agree whole-heartedly with sentinel in regards to what the future of the Yankees should look like.

For far too long, we have focused on a mega offense. Yeah, having a lineup like that is great, but you can't out hit every team in every game, especially in the post season.

What we need is solid defense, and solid pitching. I want to see a team of Melky Cabreras. Young, quick, solid defense. Not the best hitter in the world, but certainly not a bad one. Relying on a mommoth offense backfires pretty quick when everyone slumps at the same time.

Sentineloffools, once again you shown yourself nothing but an immature, retarded cry baby (boo-hoo!). You can't even bring anything fresh or new, not to mention, intelligent to the table. What a *****!!!!! All you did was repeat the same tired stuff that has been said over and over in the past by myself, Matt, and Pgarrett, and others have been saying since the beginning. For crying out loud, think of something new to say!! Everybody knows this team needs a couple of young arms in its rotation, not the old relics that currently make it up. Yes, we do need solid defense, no one has ever said we don't. But what this team really needs are players who can provide a balance between offense, and defense. This team doesn't need players who are more about defense like Miguel Cairo, or Doug Meintkiewicz or Wil Nieves who are too one dimensional and provide very little offense. You can't win games if you can't score and those players I just mentioned won't win games with their bats. Just because a player is good offensively doesn't mean is going to bad defensively either, and vice versa. No you don't have to haave the most powerful offense either but like Matt said you can't have enough offense especially with the threat of injuries always looming and slumping players. At least you will have some kind of offense to rely on if those things happen. This team hasn't been successful with player like Cairo or Meintkiewicz as the first basemen on this team, the entire situation at first is a mess and is unacceptable. This organization deserves better than band-aid solutions with players who can barely hit, it just hasn't helped this team when it struggles offensively like it has this season.Once again, no one is advocating this team go out and get an expensive first baseman like Teixeira at this time, but this team does need a first baseman who can provide more offense than this team has gotten from that position so far, especially since this team doesn't have a DH either. Sentineloffools go **** on your arsenic laced baby bottle somewhere else, and let the adults talk.

Sentinel, your comments are very stale, and unoriginal everyone has been saying the same exact thing for the longest time, try to come up with something interesting, and OUCH!!!!!!!!That last comment really hurt ( NOT!!!!!! ) not to mention immature. Yes, this team does need young arms in the rotation, heck, in general there needs to be a major youth movement, there's no doubt about that. Getting one dimensional players whether it's offenssive or defensive isn't going to help we already have players like that in Cairo and Meintkiewicz and look how well they have done. First base is a mess and needs to be addressed without question. But with who? What type of player? This team, like I have said in the past, doesn't have to go after players like Teixeira or Hunter or any other player who would cost an arm and a leg just players who can provide enough offense to get this team back on the right track, not to pound opponents like some may think. This team is lacking offense at two positions ( DH, and first base ). Is this team better off with players like Nieves, Cairo, Andy Phillips or Kevin Thompson on the bench? Definitely not. When this team does go after a first baseman, who said he had to be a slob with a glove? No one said this team had to put another Murderers' Row together to blow out teams just get players who can porvide offense, period.

I now sign off on a cheap first baseman like Demetri Young but I do feel Hunter is the guy in the outfield. Damon is finished as an outfielder.

glewis in the house! Good for you! I no longer will fart on you, just the clown sentinel.

What? The bullpen blew another game? What a surprise!!! Not!!!!!!!

Scott Proctor is a joke. Any pitcher who loses a game by walking people needs to be sent packing. We got this bum via the Kevin Brown trade, send him packing. When will the excuses stop with this ballclub? Enough is enough this team needs an enema from top to bottom.

Didn't see the game itself, but judging by the box score it's the same old garbage: very little offense to speak of, bullpen blowsup again, Yanks lose.....again!!!! I'm really getting sick of the same old garbage. On paper this is one of the most talented teams, but on the field, where it counts, it's the most underachieving team. Thanks Cashman!!!! If I could I would give you a wet old raspberry on-line. Cashman you definitely need to be fired. Fire Cashman!!!!!Fire Cashman!!!! Fire Cashman!!!! Fire Cashman!!!!!

Sorry if it looks like I repeated myself, but had computer problems, didn't think my first comment was posted, so disregard second posting it's the same thing.

This year is a struggle no doubt for the Yanks. The bottom line, in my opinion, is the pitching. The mega offense isnt producing and we all know you can't win w/out solid pitching. The defense has been below avg. at best but I feel it reflects on how well the starters perform. The bullpen is a complete wreck and Mariano is not the same closer as he once was. Proctor is absolutely horrible. I just cringe when he is called to enter the game. I feel Steinbrenner is gonna drop the hammer on Cashman. We're back to where we were but the bottom line is, the players play and produce the results. A major trade or trade should be done to bring in some consistant pitching.

myabuttreeks , your name says it all . Also , the trilogy of m o r o n s composed by glewis , p garret , and mattsaikirolemodel767 ( I probably got laid more in high school than they will ever get laid in their lives!) are but incidental fans .
Look at their posts today ! mattsaikirolemodel767 is so thoughtful that he wrote his deep thoughts about today's game in one succint sentence . For your information , the bullpen giving up a run in the ninth (walking home the winning run is unexcusable , I'll admit that) isn't considered blowing a game , much less when we didn't have a lead when we gave them the ball . This is what I refer to when I write your trilogy of m o r o n s don't know anything about baseball .

glewis , you couldn't be farther from the truth . I have been wriring the same thing all year long , and I have never copied useless posts from useless people like you . I have been consistent with my posts , and can go back to specific dates to show you guys that none of my posts are copied . I always try to bring home the numbers , something your trilogy always fails to do . Your posts are very funny , and I sincerely wonder why would you people post here? To embarass yourselves ? To prove to yourselves that you can use a typepad ? Cause you guys rarely us your brain to make yous posts . If anyone dares , go back to the beggining of the year in this blog , and backtrack the blogwar that has been going on since mid april or so . You will see who has posted what ( I am very original and stats oriented) , and see how many have fallen on the wAY . It is so obvious to see you guy are not real baseball connoisseurs . Why am I one of the few baseball savvy persons that posts here? I do it because I feel an obligation . I feel that if fans from other teams come to this blog and reads all y'all posts , they'd laugh . I just give them entertainment wrapped in knowledge . But my posts will become less and less frequent , only posting when necessary .

jhtravers , have you been watching the Yankees the last 74 games of the season? Scott Proctor has been by far and away our best guy in the bullpen along with MO . Our workhorse and great teammate . Whatever he is doing , he is giving us way more than Kevin Brown ever did . And , by the way , you too are a m o r o n like the guys from the trilogy . Do you watch games together? It would be like a special ed. reunion . And he is absolutely great , not stellar , but a great guy in the team . Tonight was disastrous , but what do you expect ? Sometimes you lose games by balking ( inexcusable way to loose , like today's) . Why is it you blame Scotty ? Why is Damon still our DH ? Why is Torre still managing ?

Jason(heartland guy ), remember way back when when I wrote to you about Torre's early season management of the bullpen? The results are showing . Is bad already , using Pettite and Roger to eat up innings (that is the managerial equivalent of walking home the winning run) , and having like 100 guys in the pen with an era of over 5.00 . I remember pointing out that maybe Torre had an interesting strategy for later in the season . It remains to be seen (did he already start using it? Is using Clemens part of his newest pitching management strategy?) Torre needs to go , and Cashman too ( i am repetitive in my arguments , I know , but it is what is wrong with this team , mismanagement from the top to bottom)

Food for thought :

Between MO , Proctor , Myers , Bruney , Farnsworth , Villone , Vizcaino , and Henn there are a combined total of 228 1/3 innings of work this season!!! A not very effective 228 1/3 innings I might add . Correct my math if I am wrong . At this rate , their arms will literally fall off , and the Yankees will finish with a losing record . That is , unless we actually get a new manager and GM , which in turn will get guys to hopefully turn it around..

Will forever say , first thing in the morning :

Go Yanks!

I hate glewis!

and mattsaikikrolemodel767 , you guys never make a good argument , backed with stats and knowledge . You are literally basebll bugs! And you contradict yourself all the time , I never do . Just go back in this blog so you see the score of the game . I am already using my mop up pitcher and all you three guys (pgarret , glewis , mattsaikirolemodel767) are down 8 runs going to your top half on the ninth , I'm the home team , and you guys are hopelessly out of it!

pgarret , thanks for echoing the Fire Cashman ! chant . I may hae you , but we need more people joining the chant! c'mon now , join the fire Joe chant too!

Can you people start a Fire Cashman chant at the stadium , please . Replace "let's go Yankees " with " fire Cashman" That would rule . I can't go to the stadium this year sob sob .

What a bad omen that "three for the birds" heading of this article is .I hope three for the bords doesn't mean literalyy three wins for the birds . What a drag .

Bords , hehehe . I will start calling them Orioles 'bords" . My typos are pathetic . literalyy? what the?

I feel like I've missed something in the last week. what I mean is the Yanks lose to the Giants in 13 with Proctor on the mound, then again to the Birds last night in the ninth. where is Mo? Why is Joe sticking so long with Proctor when he could try and get 2 out of Mo. It seems like Mo never even pitches anymore. He must be rested.

What a disappointing game...again. I'm losing my post-season hope.

Anyway, I'm going to steer the topic away from that for a second. I play a lot of baseball video games to pass the time in the summer in between work and my social life. In wake of my frustration with the current Yankee roster, I have decided to make trades to get a "fantasy" yankee line up. I say fantasy, but what I really mean is a line up that is ideal to our situation, something that is attainable.

Can you guys help me out? So far I've got Torii Hunter manning CF for me. Give me suggestion like you would give Cashman suggestions. Something reasonable. What to do abut first base? Right field? (I traded Abreu for Hunter because the Twins wouldn't even take Damon in the video game haha). Left Field? Leave Matsui there, or trade him for someone else, or trade him and let Cabrera play left? Bullpen? Starting Rotation? (my rotation is currently Wang, Pettite, Mussina, Clemens, and Hughes).

I know this is off-topic and rather irrelevent, but I need some assistance there and I could think of no better place to ask.

Let's not get too cocky sentinel. I'm a Reds fan, Red Sox fan (ok boo me if you want), and a Twins fan, but the Yankees are a good team. I may not like them very much but watching guys like A-Rod getting homers left and right and on a pace for maybe 800 homers, this team will always be the gap filler in baseball. I even have an a-rod homerun website.
http://arod.hyperboards.com

Easy , j . In the outfield , try to get jermaine Dye , move him to right , Torii at center , and Matsui at left . Keep Melky as a fourth outfielder . In the rotation , I would take out Hughes and Mussina . I would try to land Gorzelany and Felix Hernandez (king Felix) . Both will be hard to get , but both will be GREAT stuff . In the bullpen you could talk about Rafael Betancourt , a good righthander ( 33 1/3 innings , 1.35 era , 32 K's) , and maybe Devil Rays closer Al Reyes (31 1/3 innings with 37 K's ,and a decent 3.16 era) . As for our 1b , is a real tough one . People have talked about Dimitri Young , but that would be brutal . I'll leave it up you to decide 1b and bench .

"(my rotation is currently Wang, Pettite, Mussina, Clemens, and Hughes)."

Mine too J.

I am happy to know you are enjoying the development of the best baseball player ever . He is fun to watch . I am not cocky , I just like to rub some people the wrong way (hehehe)sometimes . By the way , why are you saying I am cocky? I would be happy to know . I like your personality as a baseball fan , but I don't like your multiple alliances , you pick a team , and stick to it the rest of your life , unless that team badly betrays the fans ( If I were a Lions fan in footbal , I would have defected a long while ago) . I have no problem with you liking all those teams , but at least say your team is the Reds , then the other teams . What an odd collection of teams to root for , I might add . I am a bit odd too . I am a born and bred Yankees fans ( my family is from the Bronx , oh **** yes!) , but I have second favorite teams too . I like the Marlins ( still bitter about 2003 , even though the Marlins' run through the playoffs that year was one of the best I have ever seen!) , and I also like the Devil Rays . I like both these teams because I watched their birth , and because their such underdog teams , starting with the fact that Florida is not a baseball state ( even though the latino presence in Miami should not underestimated , specially Cubans , Dominicans , and fellow countrymen Puertoricans . Happy to see you post here . And , no , idon't boo Red Sox fans . If they are polite and baseball knowledgeable , I would treat him as any other fan . What I don't like about the rivalry is that . Red Sox fans were the ones who were always bitter because we used to beat them all the time . After 2004 , you have to admit , the rivalry reached its culmination . You guys finally won it all , and in the most vengeful of ways by means of that historic comeback against us . There is no more thirst for yankee blood in new England , now us yankees just want to get to winning one more title . The historic rivalry is still there , but now it is more of a formality . I still hate the Sox organization , and the nmajority of their fan base ( it is hard to find a black face in the stands at fenway , and they were the last team to include a black player in the majors , in 1959 , more than a decade after Jackie broke into the majors) So for that , and the fact that the Red sox franchise has been a traditionally losing one , the Red Sox ******* sour frog a $ $ . You don't for being a fan , unless you are one of those retarded fellows who think their franchise comes close to ours . Jokers .

sentineloffools, once again you show you need lessons on how to read. You're nothing but an immature, intellectually challenged little boy who continually tries to compete with real Yankee fans with stale, stupid, inaccurate remarks. Who the heck said anything about you copying your stuff? I said all you do is repeat the same obvious things everyone already knows over, and over, and over like a fool. Your posting are uninteresting, unintelligent, and unreadable. You sound like a 4 year-old who missed his nappy time ( WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!) Is it any wonder why you obsess about 13 and 14 year olds. If you want to look intelligent for once write something new for God's sake we're getting tired of your garbage. One other thing, a real Yankee fan doesn't have to back their staements up to another Yankee fan with stats. They either know it or they don't, period.

Sentinel, you must be intellectually challenged. Anytime your reliever walks in the winning run after tying the score is always considerede blowing the game , period!! What are you crazy? Proctor has pitched rather poorly his last few times out, but he and Bruney haved pitched the best out of the bullpen all year. I'm not going to try to excuse his recent poor performance by saying that he is "overworked", but lets face it the rest of this bullpen is garbage except Rivera & Bruney. Sentinel, I have never contradicted myself. When are you going to learn to read, and comprehend what you are reading?

You're right Matt!!! Proctor did blow it for the Yanks last night after they tied the game. Changes have to be made to this bullpen, not just for this season, but for the next few years. Sentinel sounds way too immature for this sight. Maybe he should go to the Sesame Street blog.

rocketman , is this your first ever post ? What a splash! Welcome .

Odds are 1 in 1,000,000,000 , but if you are Roger Clemens , shut up! You have done nothing but stink it up ! I do congratulate you on landing those 28 million dollars . Brian Cashspender , you are a jerk .

sentinel, no it's not my first posting ,but since I know you can't read I'm not surprised you didn't know that. How long have you been out of diapers? 5 minutes?
