Game 56: Yankees vs. Mariners
Let me dust off one of Joba Chamberlain’s old entry songs for this: “Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.”
It’s Robinson Cano, Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners, here in town for one night only. This is a makeup of the April 30 rainout between the two clubs, and a pit stop for the Mariners on their way to Atlanta after they played a day game at Safeco Field yesterday against the Tigers. Frequent flier miles galore for everyone.
The Yankees dodged a date with King Felix as a result of that rainout in late April, as the Mariners decided to give the ball to Roenis Elias instead and save Hernandez for a series-opening game against the Astros the next night. Elias shut down the Yankees and they lost the game against Houston in 11 innings. You can’t predict baseball, Suzyn.
Hernandez likes it here — he’s 4-1 with a 1.18 ERA in six starts at this Yankee Stadium, including a pair of two-hit shutouts. That’s not great news for a Yankees lineup that posted just six runs against the Twins pitching staff over the weekend, but we’ll see what happens. David Phelps has the ball for the Yankees; he has a 2.70 ERA in his last 12 games (five starts) since April 7, the 10th-lowest ERA in the American League over that span.
Some additional game notes, courtesy of the Yankees’ media relations department:
STARTING POINTS: Tonight’s starter RHP David Phelps has not allowed a home run in his last eight home starts (spanning 42.1IP), tied for the longest active streak in the Majors (also St. Louis’ Lance Lynn)… the last Yankees pitcher to allow 0HR in eight consecutive home starts was Jimmy Key, who accomplished the feat from 4/25-7/7/94… no Yankees pitcher has allowed 0HR in nine-or-more consecutive home starts since Shane Rawley (13GS, 8/20/83-6/26/84) and Ray Fontenot (12GS, 6/30/83-7/15/84)… has allowed only 1HR at home since 9/16/12, a span of 18 appearances, including eight starts (4/26/13 vs. Toronto in relief to Edwin Encarnacion).
>> His current 42.1IP homerless streak as a starter in home games is the third-longest homerless streak all time by a starter at the current Stadium (CC Sabathia, 56.1IP, 5/24-8/12/11; and Ivan Nova, 54.2IP, 7/5-9/5/13).
CLOSE CALLS: The Yankees are 6-6 in their last 12 games decided by two-or-fewer runs after starting the year 9-4 in such games… are now 15-10 (.600) in such games this season.
ALL-STAR VOTING: One Yankees player is currently in position to start the 2014 All-Star Game… SS Derek Jeter (1,0007,968) leads AL shortstops in All-Star voting… is a 13-time All-Star and has been elected to start the game eight times… CF Jacoby Ellsbury (625,206) is fourth in AL outfield voting… previously made the AL team as a reserve in 2011… C Brian McCann (605,941) is second in AL catcher voting… was a seven-time NL All-Star with the Braves (2006-11, ‘13).
