Game 56: Yankees vs. Mariners

Let me dust off one of Joba Chamberlain’s old entry songs for this: “Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.

It’s Robinson Cano, Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners, here in town for one night only. This is a makeup of the April 30 rainout between the two clubs, and a pit stop for the Mariners on their way to Atlanta after they played a day game at Safeco Field yesterday against the Tigers. Frequent flier miles galore for everyone.

The Yankees dodged a date with King Felix as a result of that rainout in late April, as the Mariners decided to give the ball to Roenis Elias instead and save Hernandez for a series-opening game against the Astros the next night. Elias shut down the Yankees and they lost the game against Houston in 11 innings. You can’t predict baseball, Suzyn.

Hernandez likes it here — he’s 4-1 with a 1.18 ERA in six starts at this Yankee Stadium, including a pair of two-hit shutouts. That’s not great news for a Yankees lineup that posted just six runs against the Twins pitching staff over the weekend, but we’ll see what happens. David Phelps has the ball for the Yankees; he has a 2.70 ERA in his last 12 games (five starts) since April 7, the 10th-lowest ERA in the American League over that span.

Some additional game notes, courtesy of the Yankees’ media relations department:

STARTING POINTS: Tonight’s starter RHP David Phelps has not allowed a home run in his last eight home starts (spanning 42.1IP), tied for the longest active streak in the Majors (also St. Louis’ Lance Lynn)… the last Yankees pitcher to allow 0HR in eight consecutive home starts was Jimmy Key, who accomplished the feat from 4/25-7/7/94… no Yankees pitcher has allowed 0HR in nine-or-more consecutive home starts since Shane Rawley (13GS, 8/20/83-6/26/84) and Ray Fontenot (12GS, 6/30/83-7/15/84)… has allowed only 1HR at home since 9/16/12, a span of 18 appearances, including eight starts (4/26/13 vs. Toronto in relief to Edwin Encarnacion).
>> His current 42.1IP homerless streak as a starter in home games is the third-longest homerless streak all time by a starter at the current Stadium (CC Sabathia, 56.1IP, 5/24-8/12/11; and Ivan Nova, 54.2IP, 7/5-9/5/13).

CLOSE CALLS: The Yankees are 6-6 in their last 12 games decided by two-or-fewer runs after starting the year 9-4 in such games… are now 15-10 (.600) in such games this season.

ALL-STAR VOTING: One Yankees player is currently in position to start the 2014 All-Star Game… SS Derek Jeter (1,0007,968) leads AL shortstops in All-Star voting… is a 13-time All-Star and has been elected to start the game eight times… CF Jacoby Ellsbury (625,206) is fourth in AL outfield voting… previously made the AL team as a reserve in 2011… C Brian McCann (605,941) is second in AL catcher voting… was a seven-time NL All-Star with the Braves (2006-11, ‘13).

Here are tonight’s lineups:

thanks Jersey Joe. Only commenting on your comments not on the Yankees’ performance. Yankmeister wasn’t the reason I decided to log off until the Yankees get it turned around, although his comments about my comments threw me off momentarily, but when I found out it was a troll then I realized it wasn’t the “real” yankmeister talking. Anyway, I feel I’ve repeated myself so often about this team and nothing changes and so I didn’t want to bore people with saying the same stuff plus I guess I’m frustrated with management not doing anything and Joe defending Johnson and some of his underachievers. This team is going down the toilet fast if it doesn’t get a big infusion of talent and youth and energy and chemistry. And living here in Toronto I’m tired of hearing the sports media glorifying the Jays and their record to date knowing how the Yankees are performing. Anyway, thanks for your positive comments. Appreciated.

Bryan just posted they brought Sizemore back no more daily dose of Johnson.

It was him. He’s chased a ton of good posters from this blog with his foolery. We don’t even see Kramer or Aussie B anymore. He has had long term bans in the past for making user IDs similar to his and then spamming up the site.

This coming rom the same troublemaking troll who has set an all time record for being banned from a blog. The only record other than Joe D.’s 56 game hit streak that is considered unbreakable. CONGRATS TROUBLEMAKER!!!!!

Justy wouldn’t be a baseball season if he weren’t banned at least 100X He’s off to a good start with names like yankmeister10,rcgoff,chazbedlam, and now jerseyjoe471/571.

This would be a much better blog if they could find a way to permanently ban this troublemaking troll, unfortunately, they’ve tried without much success.

you’ll be happy to know perhaps that I’m not going to comment on this blog until the Yankees get this turned around if they ever do. I’ve said all I can say and don’t want to keep repeating myself. This team is not going to make it to the playoffs this year and will finish somewhere middle of the pack. All the money spent and what to show for it? A bunch of old, injury prone has-beens. I still wonder if this final tour of Jeter has become a distraction. There’s no chemistry. There’s no energy, no excitement with this team. It’s just going through the motions. They’re playing like individuals not like a team. And where are the two suits, Hal and Hank? Heard anything from them? Where’s Crashman? Heard anything from him? This team going down in flames and nobody is saying anything or doing anything. That’s all folks! Over and out.

Rob,

first nice working with you.
second, if Meister is the reason your logging off report him. Chaz, Golf and Garrett and others have reported him and had him banned for long period. Send Bryan or Bob an email.
Lastly, Hal not Hank but Hal is trying to facilitate deals. He isn’t going to take a bad deal this time of year with the price going down closer to the deadline. Morales will sign somewhere after the draft but not before unless it is back to Seattle.

Hernandez is tied with Tanaka at 8 and 1. If George was alive, he would have fired Cashman or gone over his head if Hernandez wasn’t a Yankee.

I wonder if this will be the last day of the major league Aceves re-experiment?

why is Joe so hell bent on using Johnson at `1st and saying he can play the position. He’s terrible. And he doesn’t do anything at the plate. One of the worst pick ups in the off season. It’s not King Felix who beat us tonight. We beat ourselves and usual.

Like

Well in Tampa he play all IF positions except SS. It doesn’t mean he played them well. I think Solarte should be at 1st until they get someone else and they should bring back Sizemore to play 3B

jersey joe: I’d give Robertson another couple of chances and hope the last game was only a fluke but if he still can’t close out then I’d certainly go with Betances and put Robertson in to set up in the 8th. Robertson never has been the shut down closer that Mo was. Always made it interesting and pitched too many pitches to close out. And why did Phelps throw to 3rd instead of getting the sure out at 1st? The way the Yankees are not getting runs they can’t afford to be making the stupid mistakes they are making in the field and on the bases tonight. Phelps has been in and out of trouble all night. He’s lucky the Mariners only got 2 runs off him. Chance to pick up a half game on the Jays tonight and looks like we’re not going to do it. This team is really frustrating with all the money spent we are only hovering around 500 ball. We here rumors of trades but nothing is happening. Can you imagine if George were still alive and the team was playing like this? He’d be lighting a fire under someone’s ass.

Like

He has only blown a couple of saves that I remember but he has had regular struggles mixed in with dominant performances. If George was alive, they would have 5 veteran starters and traded for an all star closer.

ARGH! Thornton has been unpredictable all year.

Rob, what do you think about the suggestion of Betances becoming the closer and Robertson going back to the 8th?

Despite what the A’s fan says. I have been saying all year that being that Reynolds is gone, we need to add Morales for Texiera coverage. I would also like us to get Headley if the price drops. Kelly Johnson is flat out weak. A couple of guys the Yankees tried to acquire in recent years have been DFA’d, one being Wandy Rodriguez, i forget the other. Buehrle is a guy we also tried to get when he was with the White Sox, he is 10 and 1. I would prefer we get medicals on Cliff Lee if Philly doing a salary dump. He could be an important piece for the next couple of years if he isn’t out long.

Like

can anyone tell me what the Yankees are thinking running the bases tonight? Terrible. Caught off base. Overrunning bases. Running on caught line drive for double play. Just killing possible rallies and adding on runs. Too aggressive? Lack of concentration? Whatever, they’re making it awfully difficult on themselves to win this one against a great pitcher.

Like

We have had some success against Felix in recent years. We’re in the game with Phelps.

Ellsbury has been stuck in the 3 hole because of injuries, that should change soon and he will go back to lead off.

Looks like the Yankees have become talks with Morales. He could sign after the draft. Lots of teams interested. Yankees also need pitching.

Johnson in the lineup again? prefer Roberts over Johnson. No Morales on the team yet? Need to get him or equivalent soon to back up Tex. That is a real weak position right now with the uncertainty surrounding Tex. I hope the Yankees can bounce back from last night? I wonder what it will do for Robertson’s confidence? Going to be tough against a good Seattle team. I’m sure Robbie will do his best to beat his old team.

Upon review of the all star ballot voting there is something going on here and it ain’t good from a Yankees perspective. Jeter is going to win out of respect for all of his years. None of the overpaid Yankee “SUPERSTARS” will be joining him.Ellsbury made the all star team once as a reserve. That surely doesn’t merit the dollars he’s pulling down. Then there’s McCann seven time allstar in the NL. So far, he is a loser in the AL. Seem to be lots of Yankee fans voting to make certain that Jeter makes the team and as a result, guys like Ellsbury and McCann are getting a boost.

Tanaka will make it but might not start.
