Game 52: Yankees at Cardinals

AT A GLANCE: Tonight the Yankees play the final game of a three-game series against St. Louis at Busch Stadium… this series marks the Yankees’ first games against the Cards since 2005… are 4-4 thus far on their nine-game road trip, having gone 1-1 at the Cards, 1-1 at the Cubs and 2-2 at the White Sox… following this road trip, will return for a seven-game homestand vs. Minnesota (5/30-6/1), Seattle (6/2) and Oakland (6/3-5).
Are 8-5 over their last 13G since 5/14 with the second-best team ERA over the stretch (2.45 ERA, 121.0IP, 33ER, 109H, 27BB, 122K), trailing only St. Louis (2.31)
Have gone 12-14 in their last 26 games (4/29-pres.)  after going 10-4 in the 14 games before that (4/12-27).
Had their season-high-tying three-game road winning streak snapped on Tuesday… are 12-8 in their last 20 road games (since 4/20).

FROM ZEROES TO HEROES: The Yankees have been shut out twice this season (Tuesday at St. Louis and 4/5 at Toronto)… are 1-0 this season and 10-3 since the start of 2013 in games immediately following a shutout loss… have gone 36-12 (.750) in such games since 2008 when Joe Girardi took over as manager.

ALL-STAR VOTING: Two Yankees are currently in position to start the 2014 All-Star Game… SS Derek Jeter (602,525) leads AL shortstops in All-Star voting… is a 13-time All-Star and has been elected to start the game eight times… CF Jacoby Ellsbury (417,452) is third in AL outfield voting… previously made the AL team as a reserve in 2011.

POWER BULLPEN: The Yankees bullpen leads the Majors with 195K this season… has allowed 11.73 baserunners per 9.0IP, the fourth-best mark in the AL… Yankees relievers have issued 0BB in their last four games (14K)…are holding opponents to a .190 batting average (29-for-153) in 12G since 5/15.

Glad too that fans have given Jeter one more chance as an all star to recognize his performance not necessarily for this year but all the other years previous. He’s been a great player and a class act as a person on and off the field. He’s a great model to all aspiring young baseball players. One day he might be the owner of the New York Yankees. But in reality this team is not performing at the level it should be performing at given the money spent in the off season. But management has cobbled together a bunch of guys who were great players in their day but they are not now what they used to be and never will be. There are too many aging veterans and not enough young hungry exciting talented players that will become the core of this team moving forward. We have not stocked or developed players at the minor league level capable of stepping into the gaps. If they have potential it’s taking too long to develop them. They are not ready when needed. It’s too long between Jeter and Cano and Gardner and the J.R. Murphys and Sanchez and Williams and Almonte and… It’s not enough to just split series. Yankees need to win series and sweep series if they are going to compete all season for top spot in the American league east division.

Glad that Yanks might have all star representation. Jeter is a symboic tribute and gesture of fan appreciation and respect. Highly expected and understood. For all that payroll ,not much to show for it . Yanks need to dump Cashman and then Girardi.
