Game 47: Yankees at White Sox

It’s time for the second of four games here at U.S. Cellular Field, as Hiroki Kuroda heads to the mound opposite former Yankee Hector Noesi, whom the White Sox snapped up off the scrap heap after he was cut loose by the Mariners. Here’s the quick hits from today’s notebook:

  • Remember when we were talking about Kelly Johnson being the everyday third baseman, except for when he’d be the backup first baseman? Yeah, Yangervis Solarte had other ideas. Eduardo Nunez was the immediate casualty of Solarte’s hot spring, but Johnson’s playing time has been reduced because Solarte has kept it up through the first seven weeks of the regular season.”There’s some factors you can’t predict when you start talking about that stuff,” said Johnson, who is starting tonight at first base while Mark Teixeira serves as the DH. “It all works out how it’s supposed to work out. Obviously, No. 1, Solarte has been phenomenal. Great kid and you can’t be happier for him. No. 2, I haven’t done as well as I was hoping, in terms of right now.”
  • Ichiro Suzuki came into the season as a fifth outfielder on the Yankees’ depth chart, but with Carlos Beltran on the disabled list and his return date unknown, the 40-year-old veteran is expected to see an increase in playing time. Ichiro is in the lineup tonight, playing right field.”He’s been really, really good,” manager Joe Girardi said. “He’s also been a really good pinch-hitter for us. He got on base again [Thursday] night, he handles that role really well. As we’ve talked about with Carlos not being here, he’s going to play a lot more against right-handers.”
  • Derek Jeter is set to log a notable career milestone on Friday when he appeared in his 2,583rd career game at shortstop, tying Hall of Famer and former White Sox standout Luis Aparicio for second place on baseball’s all-time list. Aparicio and Jeter trail only Omar Vizquel (2,709) on the all-time list.”It’s amazing what he’s done in his career,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “The consistency, still being able to play shortstop; it’s pretty amazing.”

Jeter also now has 1,888 career runs scored, tying Lou Gehrig for second place on the Yankees’ all-time list (Babe Ruth is first with 1,958). Jeter also ranks 10th on Major League Baseball’s all-time list (Alex Rodriguez is ninth with 1,919).

Geez,we’re needing a back up 1st baseman and one that can hit and we let Reynolds go who could play 1st and 3rd and last night hit 2 home runs for Milwaukee. What the hell was management thinking? We gave up on Reynolds and signed Kelly Johnson. A bad decision and now we’re in a real hole. Jays now 2 games ahead in first and Yankees in 3rd 1 game over 500. We’d better get this turned around soon or we’ll be fighting the Sox and the Rays for last place in the division

Que up the prewritten Mo’s replacement …I’ll read em in the morning.

Hiraldi took the same approach with Arod as he is with CC. Its not that he’s not clued in but he seems to have some serious denial.

This offense desperately needs a boost and that boost is not on the roster. They are basically at full strength.

Former Yanks Noesi on the mound. I always liked him.

I think you’re right Jersey but can Sizemore play 1st base? You mean Sizemore at 3rd and Solarte at 1st. Anything is worth trying when Tex is out over putting Johnson in the lineup. He is a friggin liability.

Sizemore did play 1B when he came up but Solarte can backup 1B and play 2B if Roberts struggles.

Johnson again. Can’t pick up the throw from Roberts. Why is Teixiera not playing 1st base? This guy Johnson cannot, I repeat cannot, play 1st base. This lousy defensive work is killing the Yankees tonight and going to result in their losing this thing. I cannot believe that Yankee management can think that Johnson is an adequate backup for Teixiera for the rest of the season. They can’t be that stupid. A big hole left unfilled in the off season. With all the money they spent we have to put up with this crap at 1st base. Kuroda is not good tonight but the guys behind him sure aren’t helping him. He’s having to pitch way more pitches than he needed to pitch if the infield was doing the job especially Johnson.

Girardi is right about Ich, he’s been a true champ. I hope he starts in the field over Soriano and Beltramo all day. They cut Vern and they kept Ich and Gard good decision.

Johnson was signed as a utility back up. Sizemore should have made the roster over him because Solarte can play all IF positions.

I’ll say it again. I’m tired of saying it. Cashman and Girardi need to listen. Johnson is useless defensively and offensively. He’s not cutting it. You got to get rid of him or sit him on the bench. Unfortunately he’s the only option supposedly for 1st base when Tex is not playing or DHing. That’s got to change or the Yankees are in serious trouble. This is not along term solution. They have to trade for someone else who can play first base. I’d trade for Overbay over Johnson. Is there no one in the minor league system that can play 1st base? Do something about this mistake made in the off season and the sooner the better or we’re in trouble. obviously Girardi is not going to play Tex at 1st base every game so the Yankees have to get someone else and now. Kuroda not having his best game tonight and certainly this year not where he was last year this time. Seems every game with the Yankees is a nail biter. Where’s the explosiveness, the swagger, the piling on of runs, the rallies? Hanging on by their fingertips while the Jays are red hot.

With the way Johnson plays 1st base and the way he doesn’t hit at the plate I’d take Overbay any day. A terrible pick up by the Yankees in the off season and the only back up option for Tex at 1st. Yankees need to do something to correct this mistake in not signing someone who could back up Tex after his injury last year. Really Johnson is friggin hopeless and unless the Yankees do something this is going to bite them in the ass all season.
