Game 18: Yankees at Rays

The Yankees will try to bounce back from yesterday’s bullpen debacle tonight here at Tropicana Field, playing the third game of a four-game series with the Rays. Ivan Nova and hard-throwing Chris Archer comprise the pitching matchup, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET. The game is on YES and WFAN.

Here’s what you need to know…

  • Matt Daley is here and available in the bullpen. The right-hander is replacing Cesar Cabral, who hit three batters in a terrible outing last night and was then designated for assignment by the Yankees.

“I think that everyone knows that when you come here, winning is the only thing, really,” Daley said. “I know that they like him a lot, they kept him around for a couple of years and he’s a great guy. That’s the way baseball goes sometimes.”

Daley was 1-1 with a save and a 5.40 ERA in four Triple-A appearances this year, and his strikeout numbers have jumped. He had 13 batters in five innings, with one walk.

  • Mark Teixeira went 2-for-4 with a walk and a double in a Minor League game today, playing seven innings in the field, and expects to be activated from the 15-day disabled list on Sunday – the first day that he is eligible.

  • Also in Tampa, David Robertson threw 16 pitches in one inning of work. He is eligible to come off the disabled list on Tuesday, when the Yankees open a three-game series against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

  • Girardi said that he is not sure who the Yankees will trim from their roster to make room for Teixeira. Infielders Scott Sizemore and Dean Anna both have Minor League options and are possibilities.

  • Carlos Beltran said that his sore left shoulder and right wrist are improving after Friday’s tumble over a short wall in right field at Tropicana Field, and the slugger returned to the Yankees’ lineup as the designated hitter. He’s hoping to play the outfield tomorrow.

  • Derek Jeter was not in the Yankees’ lineup on Saturday. Girardi said that he did not want to play Jeter four straight games on artificial turf, and chose to rest him against Archer with left-hander Cesar Ramos throwing for the Rays on Sunday. Anna made the start at shortstop in Jeter’s place.

  • David Phelps is sporting a bruise on his stomach after being hit by Ryan Hanigan’s line drive in the seventh inning of Saturday’s 11-5 loss to the Rays, but Phelps is available to pitch.

Here are tonight’s lineups:

Dr. Feelgood for the Rays———invite the Yankees to town. I really thought this Yankee team had great written on it. Age, injuries, middle relief——-everybody knew it, but for the first 16 games I thought it was something that could be handled. I suspect they’ll make Phelps a starter——pitching, pitching, pitching——–never enough!

I am sure at some point they will put in another call to Andy Pettitte, try to get a partial season out of him.

Rays killing the Yankees at the plate last night and tonight. Starter tonight and pen in disarray. I hope this isn’t a predictor of things to come or this could be a long year again. Good start but now reality settling in? No offense tonight and terrible pitching. Not a good combination. Ask a guy like Daley just called up to come into a situation like this? Not a good decision but so many of the relievers pitched last night and poorly Girardi doesn’t have a lot to pick from.

What is extent of Nova’s injury? Starting to think he’ll get two more starts and if there is no improvement he’ll be replaced in the rotation with Phelps.

Lol Seek. They did something like that with Wang once, put him on the DL for the season with a sore pride injury after he stunk it up.

Nova can join Hughes and Nuni on the Twinz.

Tough spot for Daley, 2nd and 3rd no outs

Nova is the one weak spot in the Yankees rotation. He’s replaced Hughes in giving up home runs. I thought before last night’s game that maybe Warren would do a better job and maybe he would as a starter rather than out of the pen. Nova has either got to get his act together soon or be replaced. We have Nuno going tomorrow and that could turn out to be another loss which means we’d lose the series against the Rays. I don’t know why Tanaka isn’t pitching in sequence because so far the Rays are a better team than the Sox. Last night’s game was a total disaster for the bull pen. Every reliever who came in was terrible. Got to get Robertson back in as closer. I sense that the Yankees are not going to win tonight unless they can do something against whoever replaces Archer but Archer’s pitch count is low so far.

We never signed a veteran on minor league deal who we could have had now that it looks like Nova is still the same inconsistent pitcher.

Totally agree with you robert G. What is so bothersome about Nova is his inconsistency. I’m willing to acknowledge that young pitchers have a maturing process they go through in the majors. However, by the end of their third year they either learn some consistency or they don’t. That’s why for the past 2.5 years I rode Hughes and Joba. Time to grow up Ivan and become a consistent major league pitcher.

I know links are not allowed here but ESPN has an article quoting Girardi saying Solarte won’t be going down.

We have Tex coming back up tomorrow, do you guys see Deano going down?

I said all winter that the Yankees needed another pitcher because Nova is inconsistent. 4 homers later. Warren and Nuno don’t look to be much better at this point. That extra arm being available would have been nice. Phelps is a spot start guy he can’t really fill it. Like I said Pineda is better than Nova and as usual I was right.
