Game 13: Yankees vs. Red Sox

It’s Sunday night baseball here in the Bronx, as the Yankees and Red Sox wrap up this four-game series at Yankee Stadium. New York has won two of the first three contests and they’ll go for a series win tonight with Ivan Nova on the hill. Felix Doubront gets the ball for the Sox, with first pitch set for 8:05 p.m. ET. You can watch on ESPN and listen on WFAN.

Some quick hits from the clubhouse and interview room:

  • It turns out that there was more of a reason for Derek Jeter’s off-day yesterday than just scheduled rest. Joe Girardi revealed today that Jeter spoke about tightness in his right quad during Friday’s game. Sitting Jeter tonight will give him three full days to knock the stiffness out, with tomorrow’s Yankees off-day. Remember, this is the same quad that Jeter strained in his first game off the DL last year, putting him right back on the shelf.
  • The Yankees have been carrying a 13-man pitching staff since April 9, when Shane Greene was called up. They might stay at that number until Mark Teixeira (strained right hamstring) is ready to be activated, which could happen on April 20 at the earliest. The Yanks also plan to have David Robertson (strained left groin) back in the closer role on April 22.
  • A stat to note: coming into tonight, Carlos Beltran is just 1-for-11 with a double against left-handed pitchers this season, compared to 10-for-30 (.333) with two homers and four RBIs against right-handers. He said that he hopes to find something in his swing against Doubront, who was smoked for five runs in 2 2/3 innings last time out by the Rangers at Fenway Park.

I like Warren. I don’t care much for Phelps, I kinda wish we would have sent him somewhere with Cervelli at the end of the spring.

I would rather Nova stay in the rotation than see him moved to the pen, even though he is inconsistent he’s far better than warren and Phelps, both of whom have average stuff and are extremely hit table themselves. Phelps has been very average if not mediocre out of the pen, no matter how you look at it,he is not a closer by any stretch, that’s why this team sticks with closer by committee approach.

Phelps was a starter part of last season and was terrible.

Warren’s better out of the pen than as a starter, he’s been pretty good in the late innings recently & I’d want to keep him there. Phelps has been lit up a little in the pen but ultimately I’d trust him as a starter, however this early in the season if we’re taking out Nova we might as well just DFA CC right?!? Didn’t think so.

Bit tough on Cervelli with the hammy, hopefully it’s just bad cramp & not anything more than that, but it didn’t look good, the review was correct though, ball wasn’t under control when the foot hit the bag. Have to give a hand to Carlos Beltran though, that’s big league stepping up for your team right there in going to first, it worked out this time, but next we might not be so lucky! Also credit Ichiro with sticking with the situation this year & playing his part well, if Beltran/Soriano are in RF that ball’s off the wall, fortunately Ichiro can still play above average D!

what the hell is Cervelli doing in the lineup? Chance to drive in runs and he hits into a double play. None of the back up catchers are good at the plate. That’s a real weak area. Better Johnson at first and Roberts at 2nd and Anna at 3rd.

Boy it wasn’t pretty but I’ll take the 3 out of 4 tonight. Ichiro with a HUGE catch against FatAss Papi was HUGE. Expect to see Romine brought back to replace Cervelli. Yankees NEED another 1st baseman folks. Sorry I think Tex is going to injured from here on out and is way undependable for my taste.

Nova the one big question mark in the starting rotation. He’s too inconsistent this year and was last year. Nothing new. Before he blows too many starts Girardi needs to think of Warren or Phelps in the starting rotation and move Nova to the bull pen. Teams find it too easy to get hits off of him, especially the good hitting teams. He’s thrown way too many pitches tonight for 2 innings and has given up 1 run on 5 hits. he’s lucky Gardner threw out the runner at home for the 3rd out.

This lineup indicates how fragile this lineup is. Despite all the money spent, the physical quality of this team is highly suspect and was never properly addressed.

I think if anyone looked at this team with unbiased eyes, they could see how fragile this team really is so it should come as no surprise that this team is getting hit big time with injuries and we aren’t even half way through the first month of the season.

Once again, Crashman fails to put a quality team together, he just fails to learn his lesson, quit with signing old players who are past their prime, or mediocre players.
