Game 10: Yankees vs. Red Sox

Hello from Yankee Stadium, where the Yankees and Red Sox are set to begin a four-game series tonight. It’s the first of 19 meetings this season between the Bombers and the defending World Series champions, with tonight’s pitching matchup highlighted by Michael Pineda’s Yankee Stadium debut. Clay Buchholz has the ball for Boston.

Here’s what you need to know from Joe Girardi’s pre-game press conference:

  • Brian Roberts has the day off, with Dean Anna playing second base. Girardi joked that Roberts is on pace to play 162 games this season, so obviously the Yanks would like to handle him a little bit more carefully. Roberts, as I can now recite from memory, has missed 445 games over the last four seasons due to injury.
  • Who’s closing today? Good question, again. It won’t be Shawn Kelley, who threw 30 pitches in his outing last night, and Girardi said that he probably doesn’t have Adam Warren available either. A save situation might go down to Matt Thornton, if Girardi can resist using him earlier in the game.
  • Jacoby Ellsbury and Thornton will be picking up their 2013 Red Sox World Series championship rings tomorrow. Boston manager John Farrell and GM Ben Cherington will deliver them.
  • Brendan Ryan has started light baseball activity down in Tampa. Mark Teixeira is doing some off-field exercises, including riding the stationary bicycle.

Here are the lineups:

RED SOX (4-5)

Grady Sizemore LF
Dustin Pedroia 2B
David Ortiz DH
Mike Napoli 1B

Xander Bogaerts SS
A.J. Pierzynski C

YANKEES (4-5)

Ellsbury continues to hit well for the Yanks and continues to be a huge upgrade over Granderson. An excellent acquisition for the Yanks despite the ignorant garbage spewed by a certain poster who has a man crush on Granderson.

I have said it to many Yankee fans and tonight it played out. David Phelps is the CLOSER for the Yankees. Once Robby comes back put him in the setup role and make Phelps THE CLOSER!!!! No discussion or debate, the guy had nasty stuff and can being it for an inning or 2/3. Tonight spoke volumes folks.

I agree Seek. I think he’s trying both Phelps and Warren in that role. Kelley can’t even be trusted in the 8th.

Seek,

Most likely the Yanks will stay with a closer-by-committee, last night didn’t prove Phelps can be the closer for this team. I’m not sure this team trusts Phelps, Kelley nor Warren.

He hasn’t pitched all that we’ll giving up 4 runs in 3 2/3 innings prior to last night. He’s going to have to better than that to prove he can be the closer.

Yellow, I would stand by Girardi’s comments until we learn something different. Are you all tight?

Did anyone else notice fast Brian McCann didn’t get his day off because of the tired bullpen, they sent Romaine down and Cervelli is our back up infielder.

Pineda looks great despite so of the concerns by members of this blog.

Whose bullpen is worse the Yankees or Mets?

the Yankees are going to have to start winning some series and sweeping some. Losing every series is not going to get it done. They’ve got to win at least 2 against the Sox but preferably 3 or 4, especially being on home turf. Both offense and bull pen and defense have got to improve. We’re not scoring any runs. Where are the come from behind in late innings Yankee teams of the 90s and early 2000s were famous for. Where are the blow out games with 20+ hits and 15+ runs. Got to get this train really moving. Going way to slow at the moment.

To quote YOGI, it’s deja vous, all over again. Going to be a very long season.

Once again you fail to think before you post. Grander son has started every game his stats show that he is anything but a backup.

Granderson is a reserve OF’er? Since when? How dare you say that about your boyfriend bpuke!!!!!

He’s started every game this season, and has the stats to prove it. He also has the stats to prove that he is playing horrible baseball. For what the Mets are paying Granderson, he’ll be in the starting lineup for a while no chance will he be going to the bench.

That bad weed must be affecting your brains, you’re believing your own BS bpuker!!
