Solarte wins final roster spot, Nunez to Triple-A

Yangervis Solarte is heading to Houston. The Yankees selected the non-roster invitee as their final roster pick, optioning Eduardo Nunez to Triple-A.

“This is a dream come true,” Solarte said through an interpreter. “This is a new beginning. This is when the work actually starts.”

Joe Girardi said that Solarte “won the spot in Spring Training,” and that it was “extremely difficult” to give Nunez the news. Girardi said that Nunez was “very disappointed and upset” by the decision.

Dean Anna will be the backup to Derek Jeter, and the Yankees will look at Solarte more at second and third bases, though Girardi said that he could play Solarte at any infield position.

The Yankees need to make a 40-man roster move before Tuesday (not Sunday, as originally believed) to accommodate Solarte. That move hasn’t been announced yet.

Keeping Solarte is a good move. He earned this shot and hope for him and the club that he does well. He appears to be healthy, flexible , and can hit. By Yankee standard he is also young. If Nunez was so desirable, another club would have opted for his services already. Solarte will fill holes on the field and in the lineup. A good move that does not break the bank.!That’s a rarity for sure.

Nunez has a little trade value. More so than Ichiro. Might be better off somewhere else. Like Lew said, he got many opportunities. Didn’t make the most of it. Now Solarte is hungry and wants to prove he belongs so if he just stays within his skillset and game he will be a great addition as a utility player. May just take away at bats from Kelly Johnson if he plays better, which I believe he will.

I agree. Nunez has had many opportunities, has shown talent, but …

Great for Solar tell he earned it.

Either Cabral or Almonte might be designated if they can’t pull off a trade before Tuesday. Trade candidates being Ichiro and Nunez.
