Mariano: Now Yanks need to address pitching

Mariano Rivera has moved rather seamlessly into life as a retired player, and along with that comes the freedom to serve as an armchair general manager.

The former Yankees closer voiced his reaction to the free-agent signings of catcher Brian McCann and outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, and as he told MLB.com, they’ll help the Yankees in 2014. But Rivera still wants to see some movement on the mound.

“They have made good moves,” Rivera said. “I want to see pitching. I want pitching. Offense is good, but we need pitching. But those two players will be two great acquisitions, two good players, and hopefully they do it here in New York.”

On the pitching front, the Yankees have no sure things in the rotation beyond CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova. They’ve made Hiroki Kuroda an offer to return, and are monitoring developments with Japanese star Masahiro Tanaka. David Phelps, Adam Warren and Michael Pineda are among the others in the mix. They also need bullpen help.

Rivera also touched on the situation with Robinson Cano, pointing out that he had several opportunities over his career to leave the Yankees via free agency (remember, the Red Sox even made a serious bid for his services). Rivera stayed in New York, and he is hoping that Cano does the same.

“I chose to stay home because I grew up here,” Rivera said. “The New York Yankees are the best organization there is in sports, period. Hopefully Cano does the right thing, but I want him to be happy. Whatever he does, I want him to be happy.”

Robert, this is ridiculous, I hope they get these people off the board.
Yankees are going wild. Sign Beltran. Boys are angry. I hope they can get some good pitching. Seems they will move Gardner/Ichiro? Soriano the DH? Still think they overpaid for Ellsbury, no way he is better than Adam Jones. Beltran deal will bite them after a year or so.

some rather weird stuff on this blog. Some silly comments. Stick with baseball will you? Don’t waste our time with this junk.

Bob, please delete the aliases posts.
I don’t by this, I smell fish. The Yankees won’t overpay for Cano, good move. But then they overpay for Ellsbury who will make more than Pedroia. Steinbrenner’s kids are all over this. Cashman is on his way out.
Side note Papelbum is on the block, I don’t this guy but if he strikes out Red Sox, it may be something we could consider.

glad Yankees stuck to their guns on Cano. Didn’t need another Arod situation. Now they have a lot more money to invest in other players. Hope they can pick up Infante for second base. Need another starting pitcher or two and a closer. Great if they could pick up Beltran or Choo. I think it was time for a clean sweep and starting over. Should be an interesting year in 2014. I don’t think Cashman or Hal have finished yet.

We’ll so much for the Yankees being a cost conscious team, they re-sign Kuroda and sign Beltran to a 3yr contract for $45million, a big risk. Most likely Ichiro is gone since he would be far too expensive to keep, plus he doesn’t have a position now and doesn’t have a role that he can fill. Unfortunately, there isn’t much left in the way of FA pitchers to choose from

6.5M on a 1 year deal “far too expensive”? He will be starting at RF or LF if they move Gardner.

Cano is gone, but he made it clear, money and 10 years were his thing. Can’t go down that AROD path ever again. Most players cannot still play at age 39-41 (and if they can they’re not 25 million dollar players) and that would have been 3 years of limited production from him. Good player, but streaky and never dominated a playoff series. Many a team has won big with weak hitting second baseman who had great glove. Those kind of guys can be found. I’m with Mo——-go get some pitching!

Cano is a Mariner. Jay-Z made it clear if they offer 10 years, Cano will sign. Deal made.
Kuroda is a back.
Infante said his phone has been ringing non stop as the best 2B left on the market.

Ken Rosenthal: Cano is on plane to Seattle will get their final offer and give it to the Yankees to match. He is a good friend with Felix Hernandez.
Seattle’s GM hates us, he screwed us on Cliff Lee among others.
Yankees are one of the clubs in on Cubs starter, the former quarterback.

Geez Mariano. This is really news. Yanks need pitching desperately. They also need to go without Cano , and spend the money wisely to put a real team together.Regretably the braintrust is incapable of doing that. Send Cano to Seattle and bring back Ibanez..
