Mark Teixeira hits DL, Kevin Youkilis out 10-12 weeks

The Yankees placed first baseman Mark Teixeira on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with inflammation in his right wrist, and are hopeful that the minimum 15 days will be enough for Teixeira to calm his wrist down. He said that it affects him most when hitting left-handed, and that allowing it time to heal should help him regain his mechanics.

New York recalled outfielder Zoilo Almonte and right-hander Adam Warren from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in corresponding moves, while designating right-hander Chris Bootcheck for assignment.

Additionally, the Yankees received an unfortunate report from Kevin Youkilis’ doctor visit in California. Dr. Robert Watkins will perform surgery on Thursday to repair a herniated disc in Youkilis’ back; he is expected to miss 10-12 weeks, according to general manager Brian Cashman.

Youkilis will stay in California, his home state, until he is able to get on a field in Tampa. He has played just 28 games this year.

Hank & Hal have put this club in jeopardy. In both cases the nut did NOT fall far from the tree. The Yankees need to rebuild through free agency, trades and their minor leagues. I’d start with getting rid of the those in the minor league system who are responsible for this mess.

the drama never ends. 1 year contracts to keep under the self imposed cap has killed this team. A bunch of old retreads that were good in their day but old and injury prone. A very stupid decision by the Steinbrenners and Cashman. What are they prepared to do to make next year better? Lift the cap? Give guys 2-5 year contracts? They haven’t built a good farm system. The prospects they do have are not good enough or are not ready. I guess it’s turning out like we expected at the beginning. We all got our hopes up after the first 2 months but it’s been downhill since.

Insurance will pay most of Youkilis’ salary. Anyone who has had back surgery will tell you it’s more than a 12-15 week rehab. IF I were Youk I’d be planning for retirement. Tex may be back BUT what will they get out of him? Beginning to look like this is a lost year.

Youkilis was always a long shot. They got value for a few weeks … but not near $12 million value.
