Yankees: Derek Jeter cleared for baseball activities

Derek JeterOAKLAND — Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has been cleared to progress into baseball activities and running, the team announced on Thursday.

Jeter was examined on Thursday by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C., who performed the initial surgery after Jeter fractured his left ankle in last year’s American League Championship Series.

Dr. Anderson determined that the injury is healing, according to the Yankees.

Jeter, who turns 39 later this month, has been working out at the club’s training complex in Tampa, Fla., with his activities including playing catch, hitting off a tee and fielding ground balls hit directly at him on the outfield grass.

The Yankees have offered only a vague timeline of Jeter’s return, saying that they expect him to be playing in Major League games sometime after the All-Star break. Jeter had targeted being in the Opening Day lineup before suffering a new fracture in his left ankle during Spring Training.

was hoping he would be playing against the Rangers next month. My 5 year old son wants to go see the Yanks next week and i was hoping to see Jeter

Hafner, Wells, Youkilis and Tex were 0 for 28 today with 13 K’s. That is unacceptable at any level of baseball. These four ought to pay the Yankees for today’s performance.

For God’s Sake get back quickly Derek. Hafner, Youk and Wells have been absolutely USELESS today. Put the damn ball in play!!!!!!! How many times can you three strikeout or do NOTHING with runners in scoring position????
