Spring Game 24: Yankees at Phillies
The Yankees made the short trip this morning to Clearwater, where Derek Jeter was scheduled to start at shortstop for the fourth time this spring. But he had some trouble loosening up the area around his surgically repaired left ankle and was scratched from New York’s lineup after taking batting practice.
Before heading back to Tampa, Jeter reiterated what he said a few hours earlier in the Yankees’ clubhouse at George M. Steinbrenner Field: He was told that the area around his left ankle would be stiff and sore. Today, he said the “front” of his ankle was just a little stiffer than usual.
“Maybe if I wasn’t told it was going to happen, then I would be concerned. But from everything that I’ve been told from the doctors, it’s normal,” Jeter said. ”It’s just stiff. Stiffness. But once again, it’s not in the part that I broke. It’s just around there. That’s why I’m not concerned.”
Jeter termed this an “old-fashioned day-to-day” situation and said he could return to the lineup as soon as Wednesday.
“I wish I had an answer for you, but I don’t know. I’ll play as soon as I can,” Jeter said. “If I can play tomorrow, I’ll play tomorrow. If it’s the next day, it’s the next day. The luxury is it is spring training. Two weeks is plenty of time to get ready.”
