Yankees claim catcher Eli Whiteside from Giants

NEW YORK – The Yankees announced on Monday that they have claimed catcher Eli Whiteside off waivers from the San Francisco Giants.

Whiteside, 33, appeared in 12 games with San Francisco this season, batting .091 (1-for-11).

He spent most of the year at Triple-A Fresno, batting .224 with one home run and 20 RBIs in 60 games, catching 36.2 percent (25 of 69) potential base stealers.

Originally selected by the Orioles in the sixth round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, Whiteside has appeared in 208 career Major League games with the Orioles (2005) and Giants (2009-12), batting .215 (105-for-489) with 21 doubles, 10 home runs and 43 RBIs.

Whiteside will join a group of Yankees catchers that currently includes Chris Stewart and Francisco Cervelli, who appeared at the Major League level in 2012, as well as prospect Austin Romine, who is playing in the Arizona Fall League after losing much of his season to injury.

The Yankees have also expressed a level of interest in re-signing Russell Martin, who has served as New York’s starting catcher for each of the last two seasons.

hey yank. I’m in TO and saw Scutaro play with the Blue Jays for several years and he was a good solid player both defensively and offensively in the clutch. I was surprised the Blue Jays let him go. I don’t think he is a 1 year wonder with the Giants. He has played well consistently at least over the past 5 years. And I don’t think he’s that old. He would be a good utility infielder, certainly better than Nunez or Chavez at this point and can still give us some good at bats. He’s a scrapper and shows up and leaves it all on the field every game. He’s not a prima dona like several of our guys are. Got someone else in mind better in that role? Anyway, I wasn’t thinking specifically of Scutaro but of that kind of player. Someone you can depend on with guys on base. God knows how many we left on base in the regular season and postseason. I think we need to address that problem. We saw what a team of home run hitters can do in the playoffs against the best pitching.

Martin isn’t an upgrade over anyone. Yeah he has some pop in his bat, but he is a mediocre hitter at best, an all or nothing hitter who hit .211 who won’t contribute much to an old team who will struggle with its offense as we have seen this season, he definitely won’t help in the postseason. He is good defensively, but his weak bat won’t help on a team that will struggle at times offensively. This team needs younger players ands a player who is more than one-dimensional like Martin.

Yankees have a top prospect waiting in the wings in Austin Romine who can hit AND play defense. He would definitely be an upgrade over Martin.

Yeah, this team needs hitters who can hit for a higher average and not just hit HR’s, but that isn’t Scutaro, we don’t need a mediocre hitter like him on the roster. He was nothing more than lightening in a bottle for the Giants, Yankees don’t need to be wasting more money on an old player who is near the end of his career, Yanks have enough players on its roster like that. PASS ON SCUTARO!!!!

Martin might not be Jorge Posada at the plate, but he’s an upgrade behind it, as for this claim, well, it’s early offseason if we’re still seeing this as our “big move” in February I’ll worry! I do concur we could use another couple of “contact” hitters, but lets be honest, you can be a contact hitter but when you look out there and see a RF where if you sneeze you’ll put the ball over it you start to think you’re a home run hitter every time you’re up unless you’re extremely disciplined!

is this signing supposed to get Yankee fans excited after such a dismal post season? WE’ve got lots of catchers but need to trade for a good starting catcher. I don’t think Russell Martin should be the Yankees catcher. He’s not a replacement for Posada, certainly not at the plate. Too bad we couldn’t trade for Buster Posey.I would hope this would only be the very beginning of a number of free agent signings and trades the yankees need to do in the off season to get younger and better. WE need more contact hitters, guys like Scutaro ad Pedroia. We’ve got enough home run hitters. Hitting ith RISP is what we need. Another another strong starting pitcher to take some of the load off CC.
