Cashman denies Yankees talking A-Rod trade with Marlins

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has denied a published report that suggested the Yankees have held discussions with the Miami Marlins about a potential Alex Rodriguez trade, telling MLB.com that it is “not true.”

Citing sources close to both organizations, Keith Olbermann reported that the Yankees are willing to pay virtually all of the $114 million owed to Rodriguez through the 2017 season. Olbermann also reported that they would consider picking up less of the salary if the Yankees were able to acquire reliever Heath Bell in a potential deal.

It has been a rough postseason for Rodriguez, who has been benched twice by manager Joe Girardi — including in last night’s 2-1 loss to the Tigers in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series — and is 3-for-23 in the playoffs, going 0-for-18 with 12 strikeouts against right-handed pitching.

Rodriguez, of course, has a full no-trade clause built into the contract he signed with the Yankees after the 2007 season. He grew up in the Miami area and continues to make his offseason home there.

I dont think anything bad would come of Arod going somewhere else, unfortunately were stuck with him. The whole girl incident in gm 1 is unacceptable. The amount these guys are getting paid its just simply disrespectful to do something like that during a playoff game. The Yankees are stuck paying him TONS of money and he knows that so I he doesnt play with the heart that some other players play with. Hes a disgrace to the sport as far as he carries himself.

Still think there is more to this FISH story than what people are letting on. Don’t blame Girardi for the benching. Not only is the guy NOT hitting as usual but the “flirting” during the game is unacceptable. My thought is that Yankee Mgmt. will work every angle in the offseason to upload this guy. And I know of no Yankee fan that will give a *amn if this guy is gone.

Hey Loco: I haven’t seen your handle on this blog before. if you’re such a yankee fan where have you been? And it’s not all ARod but he’s the guy being paid the big bucks. Sure Cashman should never sign a 10 yearcontract with a 32 year old player no matter how good he is at the time. Hopefully he has learned something and won’t do it again. But themanager doesn’t need to play a guy with a contract. Sit him on the bench for 5 years and let him collect his salary. ARod gets attention because of the stupid things he does off the field. His confession to steroids. His personal relationships with Madonna and others. Flirting with girls from the dugout when his team is struggling to win a game and a series. It’s his arrogance and stupidity that gets him into trouble. I’ve been a yankee fan for 55 years. How many years have you been a fan? And I go to the games in Tampa during spring training and when the Yankees come to town in Toronto I go and watch them. We can’t all live in New York. Do you have a season’s ticket? Don’t be so condescending.

Given the situation it would be incredibly difficult for me to go to a game in person (Glasgow is not a 4 train ride away from the Bronx unless you’re on acid) but any point about Rodriguez’s contract is perfectly valid. Say Arod was coming to the end of his contract like say Andruw Jones, would you pay him anywhere near $20m next season? Ofcourse you wouldn’t, right now Arod is simply not worth that sort of contract & that’s before you factor in the likelihood of him hitting 13 HR next season & tying Willie Mays – $6m.

“Not true”? That’s the best you’ve got, Cashman? Do us a HUGE favor: PLEASE take Heath Bell off our hands when you send us A-Rod.

I hope the Marlins or any other team will tak ARod off our hands. He has now become a liability on the team and the center of controvery that will eat away like a cancer. I’d hate to think we’re stuck with him for another 5 years at over 100 million. Where do you hide him? He can’t hit any more. Maybe after being benched he’ll ask to go somewhere else. Need to get rid of a few other high priced and profiled guys as well like Swisher, maybe even Granderson and Cano if we can get something equivalent back for them. I think beating Baltimore was the end goal and when that happened the team was so emotionally drained that there was nothing left in the tank. The offense shut down from there. Pitching has remained strong but no one other than Ibanez and Ichiro can hit on the team. Sure the opposing pitchers are good in the playoffs but not this good. Some thing has gone drastically wrong. Need a change in pitching coach and even the manager and pretty well start from scratch. WE might win this one because of CC but done in 5 I’d say. Sad end to a fairly successful season. Steinbrenners need to sell the team. They’re not really baseball people. Need an owner with some knowledge of baseball and passion for it, not just business heads. Anyway, should be interesting off season.

I hope Cashman is talking with the Marlins. Maybe ARod will wave his no trade clause to go to a city and team close to where he’s living. If we can Heath Bell in return great. It will probably hit the cap each year for the next five years but it’s become too much of a controversy and ARod is not going to do anything productive or positive for this team going forward after this year. Still doing stupid things like flirting with girls in the stands which the team is fighting to win a series and when he isn’t doing anything to help. Bad judgment but ARod is known for that. He is cocky and overconfident and arrogant and thinks he’s the same Arod today as he was 5 years ago. He doesn’t even realize how bad he is. The Marlins are welcome to him. Cashman needs to get rid of Swisher too and if he can get a consistent clutch hitter and fielder for Granderson go for it. Maybe CAno can bring in a good player as well. Maybe he’s done in New York given his performance in the playoffs this year. Should be an interesting off season for the Yankees. The hitting coach has to go for sure and they should strongly consider letting Girardi go too but it’s not likely. The Steinbrenners need to sell the team and get out of baseball. They’re not really interested and someone needs to buy the team that has a passion for baseball and wants to bring a world series winner to New York again. Maybe Joe Torre would want to buy the team and run it. Anyway, not expecting anything tonight either at the plate. If we win this one solely because of CC we’ll won’t get past 5 games. A rather sad ending to a pretty good year. I think beating Baltimore was emotionally draining and that was the team’s high for the year and it was like winning the World Series and they shut down after that. Everything offensively has gone down hill since. It is almost like someone flicked a switch and the lights suddenly went out, or threw a bucket of water on the fire. Noone can explain it and everyone is shocked. Cano sitting lounging in a casual chair in the dugout chewing his seeds and spitting them out with a smirk on his face says it all for me.

While I’d love an Arod trade, I’ve said in other places that it won’t happen unless it’s to a major market (LA, Boston, NY) to a team in contention – that pretty much means it’s a limited number of teams. Besides that we’d need to eat atleast 75% of that contract, Arod’s not going anywhere – we’re just going to have to live with that. HOWEVER if I was his manager following the allegations of flirting after being benched the other night he would be in severe trouble!
