Gardner, Aardsma activated by Yankees

Outfielder Brett Gardner and right-hander David Aardsma were both activated prior to the Yankees’ game against the Twins on Tuesday.

Gardner hasn’t played since April 17 and is returning from arthroscopic surgery performed on his right elbow on July 24. The nature of the injury means Gardner’s role with the team will still be limited to situational use for the rest of the season.

“With the guys that we have here, the guys that have been playing — my goal is just to try and get healthy,” Gardner said. “That’s the main thing. It isn’t trying to play every day or anything like that. Any kind of role they need to use me in — pinch run or play defense or hit a guy over or anything like that, I’ll be ready for it.”

Aardsma — who underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in July 2011 — hasn’t pitched in the Major Leagues since 2010. Girardi wasn’t yet certain of how he planned to work the right-hander into the Yankees’ bullpen mix.

“It’s hard to say,” Girardi said. “We’re going to have to pick a spot maybe to get him in there. He hasn’t pitched in the big leagues in a long time, so we’ll have to be careful where we use him.”

The Yankees designated left-hander Justin Thomas and outfielder Steve Pearce for assignment.

To say the least Hughes was pissed while sitting in the dugout. I realize you win as a team and lose as a team but this loss is on Girardi & Logan. Logan STUNK tonight and Girardi wasn’t much better. Logan should have been given the loss.

So the top of the lineup for the Twins are 0-6 against Hughes. Hughes just struck out the nine hole guy. Not a good decision on Logan. Hughes deserved the chance with two outs to pitch out of it. Joe G. will take heat if the team can’t come back in ninth. AROD—–just not a three or four hole hitter anymore—–too bad. I don’t think he’d take well to hitting 6th or 7th, but the truth is, that is where he belongs.

Not a fan of Hughes here but he deserved a better decision by Girardi then to bring in Logan to give away the lead tonight/ It’s NOT like Logan has been pitching lights out Joe. BAD decision, Hughes deserved better.

Thanks Bryan for update this site and keeping it current. Wish more fans would comment here. Anyway, Yankees need to win every game. Can’t afford to take a night off with the way the O’s are playing. Can only hope the Jays have another game like last night. Beating the O’s 2 days in a row is no small feat if they can pull it off. Then we have to face the Jays on the weekend.

I just pointed out to some other fans there, Gardners speed might kill, but the problem is this lineup has a way of turning a game on it’s head by putting up a rally at any given time – so while me may go in as a runner, there’s a danger he may be forced to swing the lumber. I’ve no doubt that they know this and he’s ready to do so, but after so long out it could be a problem.
