GIVING GROUND: The Yankees lost two leads in Monday’s loss at Chicago-AL, the first time that has happened in a game since the first week of July when they did so in back-to-back losses at Tampa Bay on 7/2 and 7/3 and again in their 7/6 win at Boston.

BACKPACKING: For the fourth consecutive year, Amber and CC Sabathia and their PitCCh In Foundation to help youngsters have a strong start to the new school year… today, Margie Sabathia-Lanier, CC’s mother, will deliver nearly 3,000 backpacks (filled with items such as a 3-ring binder, pencils, a ruler, crayons, washable jumbo markers, a spiral notebook and pocket folders) to all first and second graders in the Vallejo City Unified School District… Sabathia’s PitCCh In Foundation will also provide back-to-school backpacks to youngsters in the Bronx in early September.

AN EVEN DOZEN: With Hiroki Kuroda’s win on Sunday vs. Boston, the Yankees now have three pitchers each with at least 12 wins (also Hughes and Sabathia) prior to 9/1 for the first time since 2006 when Chien-Ming Wang, Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina accomplished the feat… will look for a win from RHP Ivan Nova tonight to give the staff four 12-game winners prior to 9/1 for the first time since 2003 (Clemens, Mussina, Pettitte and Wells).

FROM THE LEFT SIDE: The Yankees are 26-17 (.6047) against left-handed starters this season, the second-best such winning percentage in the AL fractionally behind Boston (.6053, 23-15), and the fifth-best in the Majors.
