Game 114: Yankees at Blue Jays

SWEEPING SENSATION: The Yankees today will look to complete their ninth series sweep of the season, which would tie their total from all of last year… are looking for their sixth series sweep on the road in 2012… are looking to complete their second straight sweep of the Blue Jays (also 7/16-18 at Yankee Stadium)… have not swept the Blue Jays in Toronto in a series of at least three games since the opening series of the 2003 season (3/31-4/2).
ð Have scored at least 5R in each of their last five games against Toronto, their longest such streak since a five-game stretch from 7/4-8/5/09.
ð Have won five straight against Toronto, matching their longest single-season winning streak against the Blue Jays over the last 10 years.

HOLDING YOUR PLACE: Since 3B Alex Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day disabled list on 7/25, Yankees third basemen starting in his place (Chavez, McGehee and Nix) have combined to hit .375 with 6HR… according to the Elias Sports Bureau, is the highest average in the Majors from the position over the stretch and ties the Padres for the most homers from that position during that time.

ROSTER MOVE: Following last night’s game, the Yankees placed LHP CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug 9, and recalled RHP Ryota Igarashi from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

What is most troubling about Hughes is that he doesn’t appear to be getting any better. This is year five and it’s the same Hughes. Exactly like robert G described. Both him and Joba are BUSTS in my opinion. 11-10 with an over 4.5 ERA is NOT exactly inspiring at all. His performance today against an average Jays squad is unacceptable. His team needed more from him and once again Hughes was not up to the task,

Igarashi doesn’t look like a great prospect either given his performance today. Personally I think we’re in trouble.

David Phelps against Ryan Dempster? Don’t like the odds. Tampa Bay wins in 10 today. Lead trimmed more. Yankees have series against the Rangers and Tampa Bay has one against Seattle. Guess who has the biggest chance of coming out of this with the series? And then what will the Yankees lead be? Probably the least for many weeks. This is not very comfortable any more and it’s time to get really concerned given the time that’s left and the way our starting pitching is performing. We don’t get Pettitte back until some time in September and CC is off for 2 weeks and then who knows? It’s crunch time. The guys are going to have to come up big in this next series. Offense is going to have to carry pitching.

seeknay. my sentiments exactly. Hughes is too inconsistent. He pitches too many fat pitches over the plate. he’s too hittable. He gets ahead of the batters and then ends up walking them or having to pitch over the plate and gets bombed. Yankee coaching and management have been too patient with this guy waiting for him to develop into a #5 starter. it’s time to trade him. If we weren’t so short in starting pitching right now we could relegate him to the bull pen for short innings but we’re out of starters especially with CC being on the DL. I’m concerned about this club going down the stretch with it’s shaky starting rotation and with clubs like the Rays andthe O’s nipping at their heels. Who’s going to pitch tomorrow in CC’s place against a tough team like the Rangers. Rather scary.

Yup Good job Hughes. A stellar 4 inning performance getting rocked for 7 runs. Exactly what your team needed today. Maybe you need to go to Pittsburgh next year.

Well I see another AJ Bustnett type performance by Hughes again today. Like I said in a previous post this guy will be nothing more than a 500 pitcher in his career.
