Cashman wants to find answers from within

Adam Warren is 5-5 with a 3.86 ERA in 15 starts at Triple-A and will make his Major League debut on Friday against the White Sox.

The Yankees were hit with a double-whammy of injuries to left-handers CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte on Wednesday, but general manager Brian Cashman said that his preference is to search for answers within the organization before burning up the telephone lines looking for potential trades.

Sabathia (left groin strain) should be back in the Yankees’ rotation after the All-Star break, missing just two starts, but Pettitte (fractured left ankle) is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

“I would prefer not to go outside,” Cashman said. “Obviously if we do go outside, we’ve done that before. This is part of the process. You have to have alternatives; this gives opportunities for people to step up. Just like some guys in the bullpen have allowed us to step up and withstand some injuries – that’s what Boone Logan, Clay Rapada and [Cody] Eppley have done – we’re going to have to ask for some other guys to do that for the rotation, as well. Let’s play it out and see where it takes us.”

The Yankees have already assigned starts to Adam Warren and Freddy Garcia, and Cashman said that David Phelps could soon be promoted from Class-A Tampa, where he is building back into a starter.

Phelps threw 55 pitches in his last outing at Class-A and could throw 65 to 70 pitches next time. Cashman said that Phelps would have been the first choice if he was ready to serve as a starter, but since he isn’t, the call will go to Warren.

“Warren is by far the next best for us. He’s earned it,” Cashman said. “He almost earned the opportunity last year, too. We’re excited to get a chance to see what he’s got to do. I know this is a day he’s been dreaming about and growing for. Throw strikes, try to eliminate the butterflies, trust the guys he’s got behind him and we’ll see where he takes us.

“He’s earned the right and he’s due for the opportunity. Now it’s going to come, which is great. Whatever happens is going to happen in the short-term; it’s not going to change the fact that we believe he’s a big-league starter going forward here at some point on a consistent basis.”

With the injuries to C.C. and bigger picture Andy Pettitte they should make a move for a big time pitcher, with the lineup the Yankees have and the way Kuroda, Hughes, and Nova have been pitching lately they could go to to the World Series this year. You can’t count on Andy coming back after this year and with the Phillies trading Thome to the O’s that probably means the Phillies will be sellers and Cole Hamels would look good in our pinstripes. Yanks have the pieces, they should at least consider it.

Last night’s outing just proves that he is not close to being ready as of yet, even his inconsistent minor league season he has been experiencing this season proves it. Hopefully, he will only be up long enough for CC to heal and warren gets sent back down, and work on his inconsistencies, he isn’t anything close to being the answer.

Crashman can look in-house all he wants, but has been obvious for a while this team lack any real depth in the minors. The so-called top pitching prospects have struggled all season. pinning our “hopes” on inexperienced unknowns like Warren doesn’t solve anything. This team will look outside of the organization for a guy like Garza from the Cubs, the less I see garcia in the rotation the better.

ABSOLUTE GEM by Mr. Kuroda today. I have repeatedly pointed to this guy as the most successful Japanese MLB pitcher. GREAT job Mr. Kuroda, Yankee fans appreciate it.

Warren might have earned the promotion and start but after this performance tonight he’s earned a trip back to the minors. And Girardi it’s time to send Wade packing. He’s this year’s version of AJ, maybe he can do well with a team that is not interested in winning, say like the Cubs.

A huge loss. Yankees were cruising. Starting rotation great over the past few weeks. Real strong bull pen. Guys were beginning to hit and with RISP believe it or not. Lots of home runs. Well ahead in the American East. We were on our way. Now a real bump in the road. if we can survive this without giving up the lead until after the All Star break we shouldn’t be in too bad shape. But Andy was pitching well. Now we have our two starting lefties out of the lineup. That is a critical loss in mixing it up and matching it up for opposing hitters. Anyway, can’t do anything about injuries. Every team has them. How they play through the adversity is the key. Will depend on our hitting more now until we get the starting pitching set again.

Banuelos, betances, or brackman??? REALITY check bro….banuelos is injured right now and on dl, betances has an era over 6 with 69 walks in 74 innings in aaa and brackman is a cardinal since yanks didn’t want to pay multi million dollar contract to a career minor leaguer….hope you play guitar better than you know your baseball! Warren has earned the shot like cash man says. As far as Ramon Ortiz, not on the 40 man roster so he can’t be called up unless someone else from the 40 man is removed from it and then would run risk of not clearing waivers. Don’t want to lose a prospect to call up a guy who may only get a couple starts before being sent down.

Good points all, except Warren wasn’t on the 40 either, so technically they could have brought up Ortiz. They cleared a spot by putting Pettitte on the 60-day DL. As Cashman said, Warren earned it.

Actually the guy that’s throwing the best in AAA is Ramon Ortiz.

Yankee home runs and now hitting with men on base could win games like 10 to 8 or12 to 10 with the loss of Pet. and Sabat.

I think the Yanks should give a chance to an experienced guy like John Maine before throwing a youngster out there. Just sayin.

Yep John Maine who has pitched in 3 games for a total of 6 innings with an ERA of 12.00 in AAA, he certainly has earned it.
