Russell Martin: Don’t blame the bat
Russell Martin is what you might describe as a ‘good quote,’ something we learned very quickly when he arrived in New York. His analysis of games is often thoughtful and insightful. Tonight he flashed his sense of humor.
A reporter suggested that perhaps Martin should think about switching bat companies after seeing the infield littered with lumber following his eighth-inning double play grounder in the Yankees’ 4-3 loss to the Braves. Martin replied with the following, something I’d never heard before in a clubhouse:
“No, they make good wood. It’s not the arrow, it’s the Indian.”
Martin liked that one, walking off chuckling and bidding his audience a good night.
