Game 50: Yankees at Angels

May 30, 2012, 10:05 p.m. ET, Angel Stadium, Anaheim, Calif.
TV / Radio: YES/ESPN2, WCBS 880 AM

The Yankees try to avoid a series sweep tonight as they send Ivan Nova to the hill, opposite the Angels’ Ervin Santana. Yankees manager Joe Girardi mentioned before the game tonight that sometimes it can be difficult to remember Nova is in just his second full big league season, which needs to be a factor with the expectations even after an 18-win season last year.

“He is a young starter,” Girardi said. “He’s still a very young starter and I think sometimes you look at what he did last year and you expect him to be really good every time he goes out. That’s just not going to happen. As long as he continues to progress. I think his slider has gotten better; at times he’s thrown some that have backed up, but it think it’s gotten better and it’s led to better strikeout totals.”

On the Angels’ side, it would be difficult not to notice what kind of an impact player Mike Trout is proving himself to be. On both sides of the ball, Trout has showed a skill set that demands attention.

“Whooo – he’s been a game-changer,” Girardi said. “Offensively, defensively, the kid’s got a lot of talent. A ton of talent. He uses his speed to his advantage to make things happen. Usually when you see a guy that fast, you don’t anticipate them hitting the ball out of the ballpark. He has that, too. He looks like a complete player.”

Here are tonight’s lineups:

YANKEES (26-23)
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Raul Ibanez LF
Nick Swisher RF
Eric Chavez DH
Russell Martin C

Pitching: Ivan Nova RHP (5-2, 5.46)

ANGELS (26-25)
Mike Trout LF
Alberto Callaspo 3B
Albert Pujols 1B
Kendrys Morales 1B
Mark Trumbo RF
Howie Kendrick 2B
Erick Aybar SS
Peter Bourjos CF
Bobby Wilson C

Pitching: Ervin Santana RHP (2-6, 4.45)

Ivan Nova simply is NOT the pitcher he was last year. Fact is with Bustnett doing well with the Pirates I’m starting to wonder if PC Larry isn’t the problem with this squad.

I swear this team has NO team speed and will set the major league record for grounding into DP’s this year.
