Game 34: Yankees vs. Mariners

May 13, 2012, 1:05 p.m. ET, Yankee Stadium, Bronx, N.Y.
TV / Radio: YES, WCBS 880 AM

Happy Mother’s Day from Yankee Stadium on what looks to be a perfect afternoon for baseball in the Bronx. All the pre-game chatter is about Andy Pettitte making his return to the Yankees after a hiatus of one year and 224 days. He’ll be the oldest Yankee to make a start for the team since Roger Clemens started a game at age 45.

Pettitte enters Sunday with the third-highest win total of any pitcher in franchise history (203). He ranks second in total wins (240), starts (479) and strikeouts (2,251) among active pitchers in baseball.

“There’s  nothing I’m worried about, I think it’s probably a little bit, no matter how many games you pitch — World Series games or playoff games – just a little bit of anxiety about getting out there and just starting to do this again,” Pettitte said earlier this week. “There’s definitely a little bit of that, but I’m really excited to do it again. Same old story. You want to get out there. You want to get that first out behind you. Get through that first inning and try to settle in.”

Joe Girardi said he does have some concerns about Pettitte feeling the pressure in his first time out, and possibly over-throwing. He hopes the southpaw can give the Yanks about six good innings to help a pitching staff that has been on a roll lately. Entering the series finale Sunday, the rotation is 4-0 with a 1.31 ERA on this homestand.

Here are the lineups for today’s game:

MARINERS (15-20)
Dustin Ackley 2B
Casper Wells LF
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Jesus Montero C
Justin Smoak 1B
Alex Liddi 3B
Mike Carp DH
Michael Saunders CF
Brendan Ryan SS

Kevin Milwood RHP (0-4, 5.88 ERA)

YANKEES (19-14)
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Nick Swisher RF
Raul Ibanez LF
Eric Chavez DH
Russell Martin C

Andy Pettitte LHP (11-3, 3.28 ERA in 2010)

This is the first time this year I’ve felt good about the Yankee rotation. With Hughes pitching better and Andy P. inserted, we’ve got a chance every game. Now if Tex and AROD will find their power strokes, this could be a good team.

Pettitte pitched fairly well, considering he’s an older pitcher coming back from a long layoff and still getting into game shape, at least he did better than Garcia did in the rotation and did better than Phelps who couldn’t even go 5 innings in any of his starts. Heck Hughes did better than that, granted his two good starts were against teams like KC and Seattle. I would still rather have him in the rotation than a pitcher who can’t go 5 innings, so that’s who most likely fill out the rotation along with CC, Nova, and Kuroda unless Hughes struggles again, this team will have to look at better alternatives than Phelps.

pitcher throws ball away in the 9thwith bases loaded and allows 2 runs to put game out of reach? Inexcusable. Poor game all round for the yankees today.

wonderful at bat Texiera you dummy. Bases loaded and he strikes out? These guys are going to have to step up and start hitting consistently or this year is going to quickly dribble away. The other leading teams in the division are winning so Yankees can’t afford to take a day off or lose too many or they’ll be at the bottom looking at everyone above them. And it won’t take long.

Quick, bring back Phelps. Wonder if Andy is ready. He didn’t do well in his last outing inthe minors. Why is Girardi leaving him in so long for his first outing?

I think Joe is stretching Andy too much first appearance. Gives up another home run ball. Yankees are going to have to get the offence going to pull this one out for Andy. Missed a real opportunity last inning with bases loaded.

Jeter has had a great year so far but still way too prone to grounding into DPs. Already 2 today and last one with bases loaded. Bases loaded and 0 outs and the Yankees can only get 1 run? Not good. Could really come back to bite them in the @ss.
